  • Had you ever been in SF before?

  • @Katmauch Yes. Back in the 70s. I barely remember.

  • I loved this video, especially the part where Paul mentions about the tolerance for the angle of 90 degrees :D

  • @ glooer oops the wrong snake alley, it is in iowa rather than SF, but look very similar though.

  • The trollys are fun, but a tad scary going down those hills lol.

Lombard street is a treat to go down in a car too. loved visiting san francisco.

  • You went to San Francisco and didn't even go to the Full House house? Shame.

  • lol i live San Francisco

  • lol it's cute when you go up and down up and down the escelators.

wow that's some crazy street there... o_O TJ's walking is most excellent lol

ahhh, you went to a youtube convention there? nice. i see you met Fred lol

    ok, on to part 2.

  • Now a small sight level would of been perfect with that tape measure (would of hated to lay out that road (poor civil engineers) the 90 degree tolerance could be +/- 3 % but probably depends if it's universal parking : ) could get away with more tolerance : )

  • when did you guys go to San Francisco? I went june of 2009 and there was just about 50 police motorcycles and undercover cars there

  • Is that Fred in the end at 9:34?

  • Yeah, he is :P

Man, I'm such a fan of San Francisco and I love Youtube, i wanna f*ing go to Youtube Live in SF xD

  • Great video! Thanks for taking a video of your adventure :)

  • what do those trains run on is it a spring or what

  • The San Francisco cable cars run on a cable that runs just under the street. The cable constantly moves and the operator can "clutch" onto it, or brake the train.

The orange streetcar that the Engineers rode after the cable cars runs off of overhead electric cables, like the MUNI trains (not shown) and the BART train runs on electric power from an electrified third rail underneath the train.

And, its all done more efficiently than a combustion engine, as any engineer will tell you.

  • love the vector cam

  • Thank for sharing this youtube event! Looks like fun, and you guys were the biggest stars there!! 5*

  • What beautiful days at Xmas time?!?! You lucked out big time!!

Okay, I have to say it... I hate people who get on the flat escalator thing and insist on walking and then get mad at those of who use it because we're tired and can't walk that football field length. Use the walkways between the dang things!!!!!!!

  • Engineers travel with tape measures. I did not know that.

  • Excellent walking TJ.

  • SF: Probably the only place in the world where you can't get tooth paste :) To bad yours were taken from you at the airport

  • I managed to buy Colgate Total from Walgreens on Mission and 5th when I was in SF in July, but it was the last tube on the shelf.

  • Glad you guys had fun in the City, but you were in all the touristy places! :P Come see the real City where us normals live! Where you guys were standing on Hyde doing the Rice-A-Roni bit was where I used to have to wait at the stopsign for the dang cable car to pick up 10-someodd people while I tried to get to work! You damn tourists! :P jk. About a block down that hill I also got in a pretty bad car wreck... these roads were not built to handle so many autos. Hope you guys enjoyed yourselves!

  • RIP Mitch.

  • well that was pretty cool. :)

  • Was that a Mitch Hedberg joke I heard!?

    Rock on.

  • haha, love the TJ "not paying attention" part

  • Do you recall the curvature and torsion of Lombard Street?

  • HAHAHA... There's some hot chicks and TJ's doing the "not paying any attention to you game" !!! absolutely classic! and 90 deg +/- 5 ... pure engineering and measuring the street! The 'actual' Rice Roni shot! you guy really know how to turn a trip/vacation interesting.. looking at things from a different perspective -- things I do as well... That is why I enjoyed this video!

  • I sooo needed the cuteness cam after a long day. :-) You guys should market this.

  • OK, naturally, ever-ee-thing in this vid is way cool. :0) Rice a Roni changed their box! Booooooo!

  • omg! that is too true about moving walkways and ecalators! my sister and I got in trouble for playing on a moving walkway at the national gallery once! moving walkways are the best part of airports!

  • gravity vector walking is cool!

  • actually its union square not market square lol easy mistake and the crookedest street in the world is vermont street in san francisco

  • Yup. Check out part 2. More Fred.

  • Wow i can't wait to go back to SF in the summer. It's a very beautiful city, diverse culture, and A LOT OF FOOD

  • hey what was the weather like there in Feburary?

    .

I went in March one time and it was as cold as London uk. !

    favorited.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean about the hills. My calves were killing me last time I was in Chicago. We got nothin' like it here in the Midwest.

  • you have the george cloony style:) that's fun

  • Very cool. I might have to make one with my Digi Cam next time I go somewhere ^^

  • i love how you baby talk your cats. lol. don't be embarrassed. i do that to my cat too.

  • i' be in ur video anytime ;)

  • Riding BART through the tube under the bay is a truly creepy experience. When I lived in the bay area I avoided the tube as much as possible, especially after the quake in 89.

  • u should have taken a cat from macys and name it live and put in in you're next vid

  • I'm glad you had fun, thanks for sharing the fun with everyone.

Is Rice a Roni still doing that old commercial??? I remember it from the 60's.

  • thanks for the video...i wish i was in san fransico instead of boring old adelaide

  • ive been through the denver airport.. its a nice one.. i like the tornado shelters all over the place.. lol

  • Escalators can't break, they can only become stairs -- brilliant!

  • Macy's and the cats; great commentary; TJ's tape measure; 90 degree tolerance; the box of Rice-A-Roni; it's all awesome! Can't wait to see part 2!

  • that was brill! thanks what a great trip

  • spotted a booger in ur nose at 1:03

  • Truly a San Francisco treat!

  • TJ+ bringing a tape measure on vacation= Major win!

  • Whoa, that was fun! Thanks for the tour. Can't wait for part 2. :D

  • Great except for that puny bridge of theirs--we have a better one here in MI!

  • Great, a super travelogue for SF and I love your cool voice!

  • Mitch Hedberg, kittens, accurate trolley comments, engineering jokes/sarcasm... FULL OF WIN! IT'S FULL OF WIN!

  • lol Like 4:44-4:50 world of warcraft frozen throne and call of duty world at war posters. good ol san fran awesome vid love cutenes cam

  • You're so funny!!

  • Thanks so much - Itwas like I was right there with you guys. I was in SF 13 years ago on vacation and would really like to go a 2nd time. Looked like you both have had a very good time then. I am looking fwd to part 2!

  • nostril cam ...haaa , how much attention can TJ not pay in the bay ,course he starts engining the streets ...lol

I miss San Fran.. it's one of the most beautiful places in North America

  • Awesome!! That was amazing! haha I thought it was really interesting. Absolutely enjoyed it!

  • lol

  • R.I.P.

    Mitch Hedberg

  • Great video. I loved the gravity vector walking and the supersonic cam.

  • At 4:46 you can hear the trolly operator say "The guy with the camera-" then he turns it off. XD

  • Haha I caught that as well. Good stuff.

  • I loved the tolerance joke, and I'm only the mom of an engineer. I also loved when TJ walked with some corrected gravity. LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Love the super sonic cable car! =:O

  • i loved your tolarance joke, it's a joke only engineers/engineer trainees would get and I'm in a brand new (at least at my school) high school engineering program.

  • Bonjour Paul et TJ mes cheris! That was easily the very best video trip of Frisco on record. You have the knack of sharing things in a way that even the most high-brow film companies can't get close to. Thanks for a fabulous tour of a city I hope to visit someday (actually, I don't need to now!) Can't wait for the next installment. Au revoir for now. Much love to all at home and you too. Suzy

  • You two were so lucky to have a clear (and it looked warm, too) day in San Francisco. Will we be seeing "An Engineer's Guide to Traveling" soon?

  • It is not "nice" to post half of a two-part without the other half! You realize you are being "cruel" to make everyone wait! :-P Now I really want to see the other part! Do you do more "gravity vector walking" inside the YouTube theater? Ha ha! That's funny !

    Good beginning...

  • Thanks for the smiles today! Love you guys.

  • thank you so much! my two favorite things-san francisco and kittens!!!! i am so jealous you rode the cable car. my friends wouldn't ride with me! they wanted to go buy chocolate!

  • I didn't watch yesterday, but, did your commercial get featured in the Super Bowl?

Oh, another top-notch video from you!

  • you guys are so adorable and funny! i cant wait for part 2 :)

  • I love San Fransisco, it's such a lovely place. :)

  • Fantastic! Very well-done video. I am looking forward to part 2. Keep up the enjoyable work that you do! Thanks for making me smile.

  • So glad you had such a fine time in the City.

Um...who is that hugging in the clip at the end?

Did you take any kitties with you to Cali? Love your videos!

  • That was the "Free Hugs" guy. Search YouTube "Free Hugs" and you will find him. He was part of the YouTube Live program. No all the kitties stayed home in Kansas while I went to CA. Poor kitties NEVER get to go to CA.

  • awesome videos - more cats pleez and thank you

  • This was thoroughly entertaining. I laughed at the gravity vector walking, startled my cat right off my lap, good job.

    Looking forward to part 2.

  • About half way through I busted out laughing when I realized you are still wearing that burgandy shirt!!! TJ's shirt looks familiar too.

  • So you're in SF, one of the most fascinating cities in all the US, and there's some sort of bagpiper/parade going on, and you are quick to point out the driving mechanism in the trolley. Dude, you are such an Engineer... ;-)

PS--I can't wait to see your time in the Castro district; you haven't LIVED 'til you've been in the Castro District on Halloween!

  • Very Nice~

    Love You Guys!!!

  • As usual, a great video! I always look forward to new ones! Love the kitties, too!

  • ant wait for part 2 and those cat videos hehe

  • BOUT TIME

  • you light up my day. seriously! thanks for these. :)

  • I adore all the Engineer antics!! Great plug for the MACY's cat SPCA too. That little bombay was ADORABLE!

Editing was entertaining all the way through - can't wait for part 2.

    Worth the wait!!!

  • and after watching the whole thing through, THANK YOU again! oh man, i laughed so hard ( nostril cam :D) Really entertaining! can't wait for the 2nd part

  • FINALLY! thanks mate

  • OO The Witchita Airport? You're kiding? You live i Witchita?!

  • Kittie is cute

  • great job was intertained threw the whole thing lol. did you know that if you did some simple math you could find the full length of the golden gate. lol crooked street
