That was pretty good - had some of up and down compression on the turns. Also great 'In and Yo' balance in most areas. Would have liked to see more hip/body tilt in the empi and cat-stance sections. Looks better for bunkai (rear bear-hug attack) but maybe not liked for tournaments?
Chiming in from the Goju-Kai USA perspective, that was crisp form and great shiko-dachi, but I agree with NewEnglandBudo on the speed. I realize this was done as a demo in tournament and he was posing, but that was so slow it was painful to watch. Seinchin as I learned it is a tremendously dynamic kata, and this version omitted all of that aspect.
Seienchin appears in both shito- ryu and goju- ryu but this is surely the shitei version and therefor shito- ryu. This is a great performance, but there are some small details, he's neko ashi dachi are not low and firm enough. Good job, is that you?
No, he was going too fast, and no this is not the up-to-date shitei seinchin. You do this version at a NKF tournament enforcing shitei requirements and you'll be disqualified.
See, I practice traditional Okinawan Goju as taught by Chinen Sensei. His Seyunchin for younger students such as this is quicker and explosive. As we age, the kata is slowed due to obvious reasons. Plus we all don't adhere or believe in the NKF shitei versions as being the 'holy grail' of karate!
Oh I absolutely agree with you. My apologies as I actually responded to a couple of people in that reply I posted to you. There are many renditions of seienchin, however someone mentioned that this was the version used for USANKF team trials and I was merely saying no. I was under the impression you were implying that this kata IS the up-to-date shitei kata of shito-ryu.
Good but not flawless. He needs to work on his movement from shiko dachi to shiko dachi because he goes up which is seen inmediately in Seienchin. Also to the end of the kata I would put just the barest hint of a pause between the uraken and the gedan barai because at it is now he only does half of an uraken.
Good work but not really a flawless performance. I think that the stances still need more work and there is definitely not enough power generated in the strikes. But I don't want to sound like a pompous jerk. Great effort overall! A bit more commitment to the strikes next time will make it even better!
Stances look good, have form but lacking fixation and thus lacking stability and firmness. There are vertical motion especially the first three shikodachi. Shoulder and chest are moving causing the vertical motion.
god I hate all this flashy competition rubbish, he's missed all technical detail, and the speeds ridiculous. or is this how they teach goju kata's (Seiyunchin) in shitoryu ? ugg
bad technique really really bad......he could have done pinaninda .......a smaller kata

It is not the shitei version of shito ryu. Look at the haito-kakete movements.

just point; stepping back sith control is a feature of this kata.. try lowering your nekoashi dachi onto all joints of supporting [rear]leg..
when stepping back down centre of embusen line [with empi breaks] step deliberately long and deep, thinking of driving your hips/bottom into him..
test your nekoashi by lifting your front foot tap, tap, tap, as if about to kick, and, work up to or down to, a one legged squat..
dont stop now..

blah blah blah blah blah.... WRONG

stepping back with control is 'wrong' ?
driving the hips back is 'wrong' ?
what is your point, seriously . .

That was a very good version. Maybe a bit quick at the start, but very nice overall.
Hoping to do that at my tournament.

Well if you want to get picky, the shitei one is the official one that is supposed to be done in tournaments, yes?
I liked that one a lot, but I think he was going too quickly.

No he was going too slow...
