I'm glad this isn't canon cause I do not like this death. The cross shaped scar fading, that's cool. And in kaorus arms that's cool. But a skin disease? I think he should teach mitsurugi to a pupil and die when he teaches him amekakeru ryu no hirameki. It would be cool if it were his son.

We learn that his breaking point was the battle with Shishio, after that battle he was slowly getting closer to being unable to use a sword as each day passed.
And so, the way I see it, Reflections took that step further and had this affliction cause his death used the discoloration of his skin to indicate the damage.

This movie is indeed sad and some may say realistic but it wasn't made by the original creator of the series neither it was approved by him. I am sorry but this anime was a huge part of my teens and also the only thing that I remember from this period of my life. I am sorry but this movies are no different from some fanart where everybody wants to end the story the way he or she likes it. I ll stick to the original series instead.

I do like the OVA's more, he was more mature it was a more serious story atmosphere. I choose to acknowledge the manga as the final wrap up of the epic tale that is Rurouni Kenshin. It had an happy ending and that's enough for me=3

The creator of Rurouni Kenshin said he wasn't happy with the ending. He said Kenshin went through so much crap that he deserves a happier end (or something of that nature). Hopefully the upcoming live-action Kenshin movie will give him the ending he deserves.
I think the cause of Kenshins death was infections from his wounds ... from his previous battles. Doctors from 1880's something ..can somehow cure the wounds outside the body but not so much in the inside of the body
I try to keep in mind OVA's are different and don't necessarily mean its part of the actual story. Too me, Episode 95 was the last part we know about Kenshin.

I was so upset with this OVA. That's why i tell myself the way the manga ends is its true ending. But after watching this, it's a little hard to erase from my head. If you haven't watched seisouhen, don't do it. Instead read the last coupled volumes of the manga if you don't want to be all sad and shit.

So I actually prefer this ending to the manga just seems a more appropriate ending. I also can't blame Kenji for having such feelings towards his father. A father who is gone for months at a time and hardly even knows his own son yeah I'd prob feel the same as well. Its obvious Kenshin was never at peace with his life if he was he would've stayed with his family but yet he still wanted to help others.
I am just gonna take a stab at this ending with my own thoughts I watched this several years ago and while I know it's not how the manga ended but is is a more believable ending. Kenshin has pretty much suffered all his life. Even when marrying Kaoru I still think the burden of all lives he took plus Tomes never really left his mind. That's something that stays with you for the rest of your life. By having Kenshin die to me says that he's no longer in pain and doesn't have to carry this burden

While its true the burden he carries won't ever go away he at least was forgiven for taking tomoe's life by enishi and none other than kenshin himself. Forgiveness always involves 2 people just like love. I believe that by finding his way to atone for the lives he had taken he finally found a purpose and so, in my thoughts, and lived on strong for his sake and the sake of his loved ones.

yes indeed i hate this movie, Kaoru got sick from Kenshin's disease, and seeing how Kenshin live in sickness and he looks like so helpless and weak from once hailed as legendary have sunken so low and struggling in sickness, just breaks my heart seriously i cried so hard in this movie, but seeing Kaoru's willingness made me realize that love can accept anything even in sickness and love will not waver no matter what may come.... i just hate this movie but also love it at the same time....

I don't consider this movie Canon. If you wanna see the real ending of kenshin, just read the manga that has the real ending. Also the director wrote the story for this movie not the mangaka of the series (Nobuhiro Watsuki). In other words the creator of the series did not write the movie script. So Kenshin has a happy ending not this crappy movie ending.
I think he died from overusing Amakakeru Ryu No Hirameki.. Its mentioned somewhere...and yes i agree.. a very unbefitting way for a warrior to die.. but I think there was a reason for it... you just need to study the whole series as a whole properly like literature lol

I know it sucks like hell that Kenshin died, and that the punctuation was bad, but I still like watching the movie, it's romantic, and shows how much Kaoru and Kenshin for each other.
The manga writer made pretty clear that if wanted his story to end with a happy ending so it's not by any means the canon end. But it's a nice alternative.

This Ending is the saddest thing I've ever seen, it is the end of Shinta's History that beggins with his Master.. the way Kenshin lived suffering... Tomoe's Death.. the way Kenshi lived with Kaoru and how at the they really love each other but Kenshin dies. The way his Friend Sanosuke say goodbye knowing it's the last time he will see him alive... that is just really sad

yes indeed i hate this movie, Kaoru got sick from Kenshin's disease, and seeing how Kenshin live in sickness and he looks like so helpless and weak from once hailed as legendary have sunken so low and struggling in sickness, just breaks my heart seriously i cried so hard in this movie, but seeing Kaoru's willingness made me realize that love can accept anything even in sickness and love will not waver no matter what may come.... i just hate this movie but also love it at the same time....

I don't consider this movie Canon. If you wanna see the real ending of kenshin, just read the manga that has the real ending. Also the director wrote the story for this movie not the mangaka of the series (Nobuhiro Watsuki). In other words the creator of the series did not write the movie script. So Kenshin has a happy ending not this crappy movie ending.

I think he died from overusing Amakakeru Ryu No Hirameki.. Its mentioned somewhere...and yes i agree.. a very unbefitting way for a warrior to die.. but I think there was a reason for it... you just need to study the whole series as a whole properly like literature lol

Yeah this ending sucked balls.. None of this crap was in the manga. Hopefully this new Kenshin anime will be a remake and be like FMA Brotherhood and be a full faithful manga to anime translation of the series... That'd be kickass..

The manga writer made pretty clear that if wanted his story to end with a happy ending so it's not by any means the canon end. But it's a nice alternative.

I think it's touching yet terribly sad that Kenshin died.After years of using his sword for good; the very sword style he used to save all of those people, ended up being the cause of his demise.

This Ending is the saddest thing I've ever seen, it is the end of Shinta's History that beggins with his Master.. the way Kenshin lived suffering... Tomoe's Death.. the way Kenshi lived with Kaoru and how at the they really love each other but Kenshin dies. The way his Friend Sanosuke say goodbye knowing it's the last time he will see him alive... that is just really sad

I hated this movie, I seriously did. They got so much wrong, even the pronunciation of the names was different. Son-oh-skay into Son-oh-su-key. BAH! And they made Kaoru's eyes brown.... WTF is that? And him dying from a painful and debilitating venereal disease he caught saving Japan, before passing it to a willing Kaoru?
The art was beautiful, but the rest of it just drove me mad.

i really hated this movie too! for the fans to love him so much and for him to die like that?! Even Nobuhiro Watsuki hated it... he didn't really want to kill off kenshin... he couldn't do it and so he didnt really have any input. the director took some "creative freedom" and just ran with it... the Kenshin fans need a do over! one that we deserve and one that Nobuhiro Watsuki approved...

They broke Kenshin's character, they did not follow basic character designs, and they tried too hard to make a bittersweet ending. :S They didn't even get the pronunciation of character names right, much less basic facial features! It was horrifically bad.

IT IS LESS THAN 3 MINUTES LONG AND IT WAS INCLUDED IN THE MEMORIAL BOX SET ONLY RELEASED IN JAPAN AS AN ANSWER TO THIS EFFING SOUL-CRUSHING ENDING.
