  • This is amazing! I'm hoping to go to julliard

  • To end the earlier argument. Northwestern is arguable the best undergrad school, but Julliard is, in my own opinion, the best grad school for classical styles in the nation.

On another note, Don't like the piece, but it's very well played. The more....yes..i'll say it, Atonal OR (note the or) modern pieces are not my style. Nor do I generally like listening to them. But this piece is a good representation of the upper crust of the above mentioned styles.

  • @detaono

Not to discredit Julliard, but in my opinion, it is not necessarily the best musical institute in the nation. There many other conservatories that are better in certain instruments. It all depends on the instrument you intend to study on

  • @tptmaster012 I agree completely, i just believe that overal the grad school is the best in the nation for classical style. Jazz has the Manhatten school of music, the Cincinnati conservatory is a great grad school. Each major school has it's strong points, just Julliard is most likely the overall top.

  • All of you people saying "rargh blargl this isn't atonal you're no musician!" are being silly. Atonality is used in some great pieces by Debussy and Stravinsky. Atonality is not 'unmusical,' it's just a quality of the way the piece is written. If you can find a tonal center in the first minute of this piece, good for you, but I wouldn't believe it.

All else aside, this ensemble is quite amazing, go trumpets!

  • I'll be whistling this one tomorrow. Nice playing though!

  • The thing about NTC....you can be this freakishly amazing and only get third place. Goodness.

  • Excellent playing.

  • Yeah, great. But where's the tune ;O)

Joking aside, nice use of tone, harmony and range, and obviously very accomplished musicians, however, I honestly don't get the turning away from the front thing. It's like turning down an electric guitar so it's not too loud...?! Interesting to see what the composers notes are on this. Beautiful clarity, especially through the louder passages, not overwhelming.

  • Wow. Fantastic.

  • this thread is exactly why the stereotype is for trumpet players to be self-aggrandizing assholes. you're supposed to applaud after a good performance, not bicker about it.

  • there's alway room for improvement. Why focus only on the good when one can find improvement? God forbid that someone things differently than you.

  • Did they win?

  • No, third place that year.

  • I believe Grand View State won? It's still hard to believe - this performance was AMAZING!

  • Amazing dissonant chords.

  • Unless your trying not to overpower somebody or a section. I wouldn't say NEVER.

  • wrong

  • There is a style (technique) where you are supposed to play into the stand.

  • The vertical alignment on this is so good its disgusting.

  • If you think this is atonal, you really have no idea what atonal even means...

  • Is there disonance? Yes. Atonal? That's a little far-fetched.

  • Dang.

  • That's really awesome! Which is a better trumpet program, the one at Northwestern, or the one at Julliar? I wouldn't mind going to either of the two for an undergratuate. What is the acceptance of trumpeters of Northwestern and Julliard? Once again, outstanding performance!

  • I think both of them only take a few. I didn't audition there, but I would imagine the numbers are pretty much the same for most conservatories. I think I'm gonna audition there for grad school though!

  • Hey "QualityWince" if you and "musicgnome" were smart you'd forego college and start playin' with pro's and make some money. We are looking for a trumpet player right now. Check out our video and gets back to us.

  • Well I would have to say that the trumpet studio at Northwestern has more depth than the one at Julliard. Northwestern in general has the best brass studios in the nation! I am a graduate student there, and trust me, I have never worked with such talented musicians.

  • Yeah, good luck with all that depth. I'd like to hear something to back up your very tall words of trumpet superiority. I'll take this group of trumpeters until I hear further great things from your home team studio. I'm actually rooting for you and hope you can post something wonderful.

  • just check the facts, see who has won more NTC competitions. Juiliard has definitely got it going on, but Northwestern is right there in the same leauge. I'm quite sure that the Assistant principal for the New York Philharmonic won the audition, right after he was like out of his undergrad FROM NORTHWESTERN. Check that out, Phil Smith (principal for New York Philharmonic) plays with (and probably chose) a young player from Northwestern. Do your homework.

  • The sound concept at Northwestern is what makes he school so amazing. Try listening to their piece from this past year's competition.

  • whos the fat dude on the left lmao

  • Also, is this really atonal? It sounds that way at the beginning but as you get into the piece it sounds like the tonality is ambiguous. It doesn't sound like there's nothing there.

  • I know atonal music isn't random but it all has a tendency to sound the same to me. You really do have to listen to a lot of atonal music and listen carefully. It's not senseless it's just not something we're used to.

  • those rhythms are incredible at the beginning!

  • Yeah!^^

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!

  • Atonal music has more mathematics to it than tonal music. You can make a melody out of anything in a scale with tonal music, but you have to think a lot more with atonal music.

  • They arent just pulling random notes. To even think that is being idiotic. If you listen a few times it starts to make more sense. This type of music is not my favorite, but I do appreciate how hard it is and how well these guys pull it off!

  • lmao what an idiot. ever heard of improv music?

  • Ahh. They are very skilled players, but I really hate this new contemporary music. I understand that things that are new always seem bad at first. But I just hate when they add random notes all over the place and call it music. :( Good job though

  • great piece and great job playing

  • Comment removed

  • This sounds like nancarrow no. 46, the ending of it

  • And that is why they are at Juilliard. Well done.

  • ?!?! 7:05 to 7:30 seriously sounds like two trombone players just jumped in. That's insane!!!!!!!!! Not to mention the mind blowing jumps at the end as well.

  • What are the rhythmic lines doing at 7:18???? That sounds freakin' cool

  • sweet, if only the recording equipment used for this video was any good, and the recording mastered

    but awesome, i love trumpets

  • You know, since I am an absolute fan of this video, i heard soo many instruments being played here in this song: trumpet, clarinet, alto sax w/french horn, piccolo, flute, bass trumpet, oboe, english horn, and then jazz trumpet at the beggining!! I absolutely hear those instruments in there causing lovely timbres which i absolutely enjoy by my ability of perfect pitch. Thank you Juilliard!! And I'm working my hardest to get to that school in 2011

  • Who's the TPILF?

  • See the info, I bet you can figure it out for yourself.

  • @alwtrp123 don't be such a dick dude and you could have just as easily answered the guy's question without being a twat

  • wow

  • Excellent piece, I wish I could find other trumpet players to play this =/ I can understand why there are negative comments, dissonance on a bad sound recording doesn't exactly sound wonderful. I'm sure if I was there I would be absolutely blown away by the virtuosity demonstrated.

  • crazy. the end is so intense!!! GREAT technique.

  • This is my dream college right here!!!! I've been trying to prepare for this, but right now i need a teacher who can teach me. But for now, I juts have to keep working and make some huge accomplishments. Anyway, I love this Trumpet Ensemble!!!, It has sooooo many colors represented1!!!! and the trumpets almost sound like horns which is pretty amazing to have a dark sound!!!

  • Julliard...my dream school..

  • It's called Juilliard.

  • The vibrato is so tight, I wish I could play in groups like this...very well done.

  • post the 2008 clip! "thank you!" and then me turning to you saying, "are they fucking kidding me?" haha i can't wait to see the comments on that

  • What's great about this music is that on first (and usually last) listening, you don't know if they missed any notes.

  • woah i think their playing is awesome... great technique, and even showmanship... they played really well together... but yeah, i ain't a fan of this kinda contemporary music... it ain't really something i would listen to in a car or for anywhere else... but the fact that they are in juilliard speaks for itself... only 7% of applicants are offered places in juilliard...

  • and by the way, principaltrumpet4U, that "fat guy on the left" is Clayton Chastain. He subs with the Atlanta Symphony and gigs all over. He played only played trumpet for just four years before getting accepted into Juilliard ON FULL SCHOLARSHIP. The next time you want to post hateful comments, take a look at you own pathetic life. Its worthless pieces of shit like you that take away from everything that youtube has to offer. Get a life, get some talent, and MAYBE you'll be worth something. Ass

  • dude that's awesome. I'm nowhere near that good but i've been playing for 3 years now and have made district band. I know that's not much or even close to this level but maybe i can work for the same thing he did! haha =)

  • These people are really good, but this piece is absolutely hideous. I've heard horns on a Semi that sounded better than that. Don't get me wrong though, they kick my ass at trumpet but they could have picked something better to play.

  • I'd love to hear this ensemble do my original setting for 12 trumpets of 'a rocky headland amid wild winds'.

    Great performance!!!!!

  • Way i see it... It takes precision and endurance to make a peice like this into a music, and is seems apparent that it takes some musical experience to appreciate it. It may sound like a group of accidental notes to some people, so lets not be judgemental please?

  • This is an incredible performance and the piece is so much more tasteful to listen to compared to many of the groups.

Most repertoire I've hear at NTC in the past few years is incredibly too technical and 'showy' if you understand. the insanely fast tonguing, marching on stage, multi-colored shirts, is all just too much to bear. I even remember watching a group that patted the palms of their hands onto their mouthpieces to create that 'whopping' sound out of their bells....gimme a break..

  • Very fine playing. You are all to be commended for your excellent work!

  • crawl in a hole, and have somebody fill it up....Unless you're joking, which I can only assume you are, because comments like that are either from a total idiot, or just somebody looking for some drama through obvious sarcasm.

  • You're an idiot.

  • haha someones jelouse that he sucks at trumpet

  • THAT DUDE ON THE LEFT IS MY FRIEND YOU SHIT BAG!!!!!!!!! This guy is on the sub list for the New York Philharmonic as an UNDERGRAD! Unless you can pull that off, you need to sit down and SHUT THE FUCK UP!

  • Wow, did you say lack of lack of skill and musicianship (or do you mean musicality)? I really hope you aren't a principal trumpet for any organization. I bet you their fart sounds have more expression than your playing.

  • omg.. dont be judgemental if you dont know shit about real music!!.. you noob, thats real dumb. If you want to be that retard.. then post some video off you playing a trumpet or other instrument. and before you begin to play say: hi mum so we know it is you!

  • Oh my god! The whole piece is amazing, but the ending absolutely blew me away!

  • Caleb Hudson has a foot long!!!!

  • kids in high school dont have tones like these guys..its not the music thats impressive..its the sound and musicianship that is coming out of these horns

  • 7:17 .... wtf

  • You know, I think I've actually heard a gaggle of geese make that exact sound before, but it wasn't nearly as in tune as this...

  • sweet sweet, hey you guys should put up your 2008 ntc performance!! i'd like to see that.

  • Please post a clip of yourself playing something more impressive than these guys...or stop writing negative posts.

  • What high school did you have in mind? Nisihara? Sure, they're good, but they spend 20 hours a week on the same show for an entire semester, on music that isn't nearly as difficult. Some Texas wind band? Again, an entire semester on three pieces.

NTC is not a priority for these players, it's a side gig that they don't spend a lot of time preparing for. My sister is in this ensemble (won the NTC solo div. this year), and I've met most of the players, so I know what I'm talking about. QED.

  • Excellent use of QED.

  • Whats QED?

  • google it. =D

  • High schoolers CANNOT DO THIS.

  • Ummm...dude? You do know that that's what the piece is supposed to sound like, right? You obviously don't know much about music at all.

  • I actually know the dude standing the second one in on the left. His name's Clayton Chastain and he's an absolute beast.

  • How far did you guys get?

god it's scary..I'm gonna be on that stage in nine days

  • Omg, wow... you guys are awesome. I used to play trumpet, geez that instrument was the bomb. It gave me a funny lip afterwards, though xD. I'm going more towards violin and guitar, seeing as though I rented the trumpet and to give it up. It's easy to see why you guys are Juilliard! Keep it up!

  • DAH-nah-nah-nah-nah

    NAH-nah-nah-nah-nah...

    BATMAN!!!!

    i love this song.

Who is Tal? A Klingon? He's got a kickass song written about him!

  • YOU'RE THE MAN CALEB!!!!

  • de puta mare ah... bien ahi!

  • Nice.

  • So this is what happened to Star of Indiana!

  • That's kind of a funny comparison. I guess it is kind of reminiscent of the Medea show. I'll tell Brandon that you think he's as good of a composer as Samuel Barber.

  • I'm not gonna lie it's good the dinamic contrast is superb but it's just not my flavor I know you guys that commented might like it so don't critisize me for what I like it's just an opinion

  • Don't criticise something that harshly if you don't understand the music...I used to hate avent garde music until I learned to try and understand the idea behind it...although this sounds more diatonic than rue avent garde.

  • that is correct, trying to criticize music when you don't understand the art is like saying Moby Dick sucks when you don't understand the literary merit. The comprehension requires education and an open mind. That is why music was always intended for the intelligent.

On another note, it seems funny how all those who put down these great performances have little to no history on their own youtube accounts. They have no "credence" to give criticism, much less bag on other people's performances.

  • Its called dissonance... Perhaps if you were actually competent enough to tell them that they suck, you wouldn't say that the beginning sucks. Because obviously, they did a fantastic job on that difficult dissonance. They played it perfectly without a fault. That's amazingly difficult when there's dissonance and you can't tell if you are playing right because there aren't any notes you could compare your pitch with. This is superb and does not suck, at all. Why aren't you in Julliard papajons77?

  • That's tight! And Fun!

  • Excellent. Would love to have a CD to play on the radio...

  • I would like to hear more weight in you sound. More point and bounce Find a copy of the CD Contrast for trumpet. It will give you some insight to what I am saying. Good luck.

  • These are strong resontat sounds you annoying bastard

  • resonant sorry

  • what are you talking about...a few of these people sub for the New York Philharmonic, and you're telling THEM they need to have bigger sounds? Unless you're Chris Martin, which if it is I'm sorry I had no Idea it was you, leave the comments in the peanut gallery where they belong...

  • oh im sorry i forgot, what conservatory do you go to?

  • this was directed at someone else (FYI)

  • This piece was played really well, and I gotta give those players their props, but this just raises another irk I have with contemporary compositions. It seems that not a lot of it makes very little sense... it's more like performance art or experiments with sound.

  • Wow they all have beautiful sounds, and technique to spare too! That sounds like a pretty hard piece and they make it seem pretty easy. However, its just not exciting to me- it seems to lack the flare that the music deserves.

  • Gouldilocks and Raymo would be proud. But you're all still a bunch of saggy-butt wankers. My advice: next time you turn your back to the audience, do a bit of stairmaster first!

  • some of the double tounges got a little hard but very nice job fellas.............and lady.

  • ok i dont wanna be that totall cocky douche bag, becasue this is absouloutly amazing and i would love to be able to meet anyone of the six, but it sounds like a note got fracked in the chord progression around 6:40 what do you think?

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA i jsut went to reply to this comment.. but then i realized that it was posted by me.. like a month ago... wow... i mean.. fucking wow.... these six are still fuckign spectacular

  • I don't know the pice, being a tuba player and all, but it doesn't sound so out of place in this particular style...

  • ooo spox nice I too play on trumpet SUPER instrument a lov play jazz and i am girl:D

  • for the record, brassfire...juilliard is the toughest school of music or at least one of the top 3, if ur a sophomore and your aiming at juilliard, u better already be able to play things like Gypsi Aires, be able to transpose to any key on command, etc. im a trumpet player too who is aspiring to a music major, im a junior in highschool so maybe we could trade music

  • Juiliard... = amazing!

  • YAY GIRL TRUMPETERS!

  • That was great. A lot of the technical stuff was really doable, but the endurance they have is remarkable... I couldn't last that long if my life depended on it..

  • you are all geniuses

  • listen to Patricio Molina playing Peter Mennin

  • Really good preformance. I am going to be a sophomore (in highschool) trumpet player and Juilliard is the school I am aiming at.

  • This is pretty amazing. They really are the best of the best, as far as college students go.

  • don't forget about curtis. :)

  • o and i forgot to say well done :P

  • i can relate this style of note dischroding and indeed style of playing with that from the film fantasia

  • Great job guys! unfortunately i couldn't be there this year since i won in my division last year, but I hope it was a huge success.

  • Nothing wrong with the trumpet playing, but where are the staccto runs up and down the octaves, to make it shine? Maybe the wrong style for this piece, which, to me, sounds like a Disney styled requiem. Not that I'm a bitter trumpet player, but what's the deal with the balding requirement for the guys here?

  • a disney styled requiem... that makes you sound real smart..

  • The "balding" makes it shine :-)

  • there is a national trumpet competition?!?!? do they have national competitions for all the other instruments?

  • There is indeed a National Trumpet Competition--Google the name for the web site. Most other instruments have competitions; these competitions have nothing to do with NTC, though, and are run by other independent groups.

  • Those are some sweet notes.

  • Nice job guys! Wish I could have been there with you this year. Tell Brandon his piece rocks out.
