I like the dancing in the video, but I don't like when this music is being played in such unlogical settings as these. Playing the violoncello next to a road, that doesn't make sense to me, and you know that you don't hear how he played at that very moment.
@xDSlimz Well, I hold my bow like that too. It looks better, and it feels better. It doesn't put pressure onto your thumb if you keep your thumb out of the frog thingy.
He started playing cello when he was 3, right? Cello's a BIG instrument in such little hands! When you watch this or any of his performances really, you see how much he lives, breathes, eats, has sex with and loves music and the cello. I think he's an incredible musician, and I really like how he's gone outside classical music to partner with so many different artists from many different genres. I also really like his "music is for everybody" attitude. These are such wonderful pieces. Thanks.
@sosome57 Actually, he started playing Violin at the age of 2, because his father was a Violinist, and taught him. But by the age of 4, he found his true calling was Cello. And at just 5, he was playing in the London Symphony. I know, WOW. :)
@ThinkLikeACello Age 2. Most people aren't even potty trained at 2! Good lord. He's such a nice guy, too. Or so it seems. Bright dude. Let me think. Did I even know how to read when I was 5? Uhm, can't remember. How do you play the cello when you have hands the size of dog paws? Whew. He's one of my favorite musicians. I love how he collaborates with other musicians regardless of their musical training and their musical genre. He's not a classical snob.
LOL...I love the expression of the old lady who drops her coin contribution in Yo-Yo Ma's cello case (2:47). How awesome that would be to listen to him play somewhere on the streets of New York!
I hope to be as good as him one day. Ive been playing cello for about a year and three months, and I could play suite one completely, as well as suite 2 prelude, suite 3 prelude. I hope to play as nicely as him one day:,)
I hope that Yo-yo Ma can play my love song for Valentine's Day at:

why does he hold his bow like that? I know people are gonna say "cause hes yo-yo" but im just wondering if theres a reason
xDSlimz 6 months ago
@xDSlimz it's the way people held bows in bach's time :)

@meow121meow I know, but they actually had bows that were meant to be held like that.

holy shit he just ripped through that thing like it was the most automatic thing in the world. non-cellists have no idea how hard this piece is.

This is excellent.
Bow before his greatness.
Love his shirt with the puffy sleeves in the first part of the video.
