She's definitely got some skill, but her interpretation lacks depth and character. It's too fast and unemotional. In fact, her speed makes the sixteenth note right hand runs lose clarity, definition, and even rhythm to an extent. Furthermore, she made several mistakes throughout this performance -- whether that was caused by her excessive speed or possibly lack of practice prior to the performance. For the best performance of this impromptu on YouTube , check out Krystian Zimerman's performance
Oh man, you only wish you could come close to her abilities... that's why She is a great pianist by the name of Maria João Pires who will be remembered throughout history, and you... an insignificant entity who will be forgotten some time from now.
This is almost superhuman in its delivery. The great celerity is there, but the interpretation is supernal. The only interpretation comparable to it is that of Murray Perahia. Awesome indeed!!
Though I appreciate how she plays the Trio part, i don't like the way she tends to over accelerate on the rest of this piece. It's like she wants to finish it as quickly as possible. Of course it's just a matter of interpretation, but it stresses me out a little bit.
Compared to her rendition of op 90 nr 3, this nr 4 is really perfect! Her tendency to vary and bring "unrest" in the performance is now no problem She even avoids loosing the melodic line in the middle part because of the extreme fortes.
FOUND IT! FINALLY! SOMEONE WHO PLAYS THE TRIO EXACTLY THE WAY I LIKE IT! Even better than brendel, better that rach, zimmerman and rubistein, she fells perfectly the eroticity behind that trio... PERFECT i have become a personal fan of this woman!
Bravo! An impassioned performance no doubt, I'm a huge fan of zimerman's interpretation of this piece but I agree that the middle section of Pires' interpretation is much more savory. It seems like her 16th notes are a little rushed an uneven at times... but then again if you listen to Rachmaninoff play this piece he does the same thing... so maybe that the way a true romantic would have done it. Either way, this piece is flexible in how you can interpret... a testament to Schubert's genius
Rubinstein's is good but he's too old to convey the passion that Maria demonstrates in this performance. Zimmerman's interpretation of the middle section of this piece is too frenetic in my opinion. I also think this is the best version of Op. 90 No. 4 on YouTube (even if there are a few mistakes)
It's not the speed, though it's certainly fast. It's sonority, clarity of texture, phrasing, expression (soul), impeccable polish. Boys and girls, it doesn't get much better than this.
I think it does get better then than this. I think the performance of zimmerman is better. He plays the first part slower, i think its better actually but i dont say this isnt great. it is also very good

btw indeed some very noticible mistakes after 6.10 or so....
I have really grown to love the way she plays this piece, ESPECIALLY the middle part. I play this as well and I have been playing it a lot ever since I have listened to her intepretation and have taken the same approach in playing the middle part much slower and with much emotion. It is absolutely a heart-felt and BEAUTIFUL interpretation of this piece!!
It's supposed to be played quickly. Most people are not able to play as fast. This is "allegretto." Each quarter note is 144 times a minute as indicated on the piece. It means that this is one of the pianists actually capable of playing that fast.
well you certainly are entitled to your opinion. And I am too. The difference is everyone will agree with my opinion. My opinion is you are a complete idiot!

It's too fast! Schubert made this alegro, not prestissimo.

Difficile de choisir entre Zimmermann et Pires pour la qualité de jeu de ce morceau assez difficile à éxécuter !
chouchou210150 3 years ago
Even Rubinstein is far from this perfection: the balance between emotion, subtility, lightness and absolute technical mastery

Truth alone exists for the wise and beauty for the susceptible heart - both belong together and they have found each other here.
This is real - it's something so much more than piano playing. It comes from some place else - the residence of the soul.

It's missing heart...
Too quick... It's more like a car race than a Schubert impromptus...

mmm
Ok, it's 144, andante, anyway music is not a schematic stuff...
Would you ever give an applause to a synthetisator playing at exactly speed each note?
Music comes from heart, and this looks more like a demonstration, as said before...
I believe virtuosists being able to play at this speed are all around. If none does, this means something!
