This is so helpful! I want to teach singing using one of these technologies and would really like to be able to sing at the same time as my students - right along with them. When you posted this in 2010 it seems like Google Chat was best - do you know if that's still the case? And thanks again!
OK, I've done a test between Google talk and Skype with a friend of mine and on our test it has shown that Skype was actually better than Google.
For starters, Skype had better video quality then Google (which was shown on your test equally) but so did the audio surprisingly. Skype's audio wasn't as loud as you guys were commenting about on your test. Overall in our test, Skype is the winner and is a better experience for video chat.
Once again Gizmodo shows how stupid they are, why the hell would you use the beta version of skype ? Also you should use Windows for testing skype and google if you wanna make it fair.
What did you do record your mic twice through OS X? You guys are like one of the main reviewers with giz, and with a screwup like this; you two couldn't retake? Very poor execution on a article I was interested in. Blogs are not OTA broadcast quality, yet you guys can be better than amateur. Take the seven minutes of source, do the iMovie editing (WOW) again and do over. Lifehacker part of gizmodo goes "ohh audio echo just ignore it, here is a lower third mention of it thanx". LAME!!!!
GTalk is great, but the lack of a phone voice client is a real negative for me. I use Skype on my phone for playing video games on my couch. I have a headset for my PS3, but most of the time I find it a little too indirect when playing with a specific person. I could set my netbook beside me but that's a little clunky.
