@edwards 1971 - I believe the title of the album is 'James Brown Plays James Brown' from 1965. There are instrumental versions of 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag,' 'Out of Sight,' 'Try Me,' and 'Maybe The Last Time' that also bear listening to...
We had that same B3 for all those years, in the bus, planes, all over the world... it would break, James would have someone come fix it... vac tubes and all. It only brought about 10G at the auction a few months ago, even with the "Godfather" leather face on it... I real shame it was sold.
Appreciate the info. One of my favorites was "Song For My Father". Hope someone has a copy. Last year tracked this album all the way to King Records & James Brown's official website but no luck. Don't worry, the quest will continue. I'll let you know if I find it. What area of the country was your band located in? We were basically Southeast but played all over the country and Japan touring with different musicians and concert tours during the mid 70's thru the early 80's.
@skippydoowhop53: I grew up in Milwaukee, WI which was, in the 50's ~ 70's, a hot band town. Groups from Milwaukee include The Esquires, Aalon Butler & The Different Bag, Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds, etc. Personally, I never played outside Wisconsin with a band but many bands from MKE performed extensively all over the country. Also, what band did you go to Japan with? Did you gig at Mugen in Tokyo? Let me know. I was in Japan from 1980 on.
The name of the group was Amida Band & Show from Charleston, SC. We played in Nagoya and Tokyo in the Penthouse Clubs organization in 1979-80. Later were the Double Dutch Band with Frankie Smith, backed up Archie Bell, Bo Didley, Joe Tex and alot of others while doing alot of front-gigs on concerts.
Man, wasn't Japan wild back then. We were "American skip-pays".
@porn1978 Do you mean to say, "Milwaukee sucks"? Get your English straight if you intend to insult anyone. BTW, I can imagine that with a name like "Porn" you've been catching grief about it all your life. Poor soul. The discussion on this page is about music and James Brown's organ playing. Send me a note on my private message page if you want to insult my hometown and start a fight, you idiot!
@porn1978 If you're not talking about James Brown's music, sorry, I'm not interested. Take your shits and giggles back to adolescent land -where you came from. You're in the wrong place, jerk!
In 1968 I played tenor sax in a James Brown influenced 14 piece band. We killed this track! Three trumpets, a bone, an alto sax, two tenors and and bari made up our horn section. Too bad I was the youngest member in the band by far and the other tenor took the solo.
I hope 1Bluesboy1 puts the rest of this album on YouTube. Years ago, I had a copy of this album. We learned alot of our first jazz solos from this album. You should hear their arrangements of "Song For My Father", "Try Me", "Out of Sight" & particularly "Sidewinder" (it's a real classic!!!) I have been trying to find a copy of this album since I lost mine in Hurricane Hugo in Charleston, SC. I really hope that 1Bluesboy1 puts some more songs from this album on YouTube.
skippydoowhop53, my experiences are similar to yours. I played tenor sax and this album was my Bible at age 12 or 13. I, too, lost my LP somewhere. The compilation called "Soul Pride, The Instrumentals" has some but not ALL of the tracks from this album. Sidewinder was the BOMB!
just great, I used to have the Handfull Of Soul album, lost it. All instrumental. Would like to hear some more of this. thanx, Ernie in El Chuco

The Grits LP has a greasy, nasty, lowdown cut called either "Tempted" or "Who's Afraid of Virginai Wolf" with Maceo soloing.
