Great 1972 punk rock sound. What a pioneer ol' Johnny was...loved how he dared to be antithesis to everything hippie. Later "punks" really destroyed what guys like Johnny perfected between about 1970-75.
Please use your talents and animate other Modern Lovers songs. This is so well done, I keep coming back to it! And this version of She Cracked is SO much better than the one on the album.
Absolutely loved the animation. What fun. And everything Modern Lovers recoded in their brief career is wonderful musical good times. Thank you for posting this.
Kinks,Velvets,MC5,Stooges were all partly responsible, but this is surely the first thinking persons "Punk" record.. Television,Saints,Buzzcocks,Fall,Wire, etc must have been taking note..
Uh this is from the sixties.Once again you fail with ignorance. And this band was pretty much responsible for the entire genre of punk.Guess what icp is responsible for?Absolutely nothing other than being a joke to anyone that likes real music.
Well, late sixties/early seventies. This was an amazing band that pretty much imploded on the eve of success. Jonathan Richman made excellent music after that, but if these guys could have stayed together, oh the music they'd have made...
Early? This one is from 1973. The official one (from the Modern Lovers' debut) was from 1972. So this is the late version. Which was not chosen to be released. By the way: they already played this song live in 1970!!!
I'm not lazy, as i said, i looked it up. Sorry i didn't look in the correct place. Why does every single person on youtube have to give some "holier than thou" answer to everything i post?
i don't think fowley's demos have ever been released officially, so you just have to keep searching...i'd try some torrent sites or keep googling until you find a live blog post.
In April 1972, the Modern Lovers traveled to Los Angeles where they held two demo sessions; the first was produced by the Velvet Underground's John Cale for Warner Bros. while the second was produced by Alan Mason for A&M. The Cale sessions were later used on the bands debut album. While in California the band also performed live, and one gig at the Long Branch Saloon in Berkeley was later issued as a live album.Kim Fowley courted the band, traveling to Boston to produce some demos in June 1972
I've been posting songs and I keep getting replies about the modern lovers. Will someone tell me what they think. I'm not begging...Well I suppose begging isn't so bad. I mean it's not like stealing. I suppose borrowing has a one-up one it. Ok. I'm begging on bended intangible knees.
Great version! But why is it called "She Cracked -- 1977 demo"? It was recorded in 1973 (produced by Kim Fowley). There is an even earlier version by the way, recorded in 1972 (produced by John Cale), which later on was used on the band's debut album. It was already on the band's setlist in 1970! Very innovative song, extremely influential to later pop music. Calling this the 1977 demo therefore is a bit pity.
Cool song and very suprizing. It seems to be about crack and it shows ciggarett ashse.I always thought Richman was anti-drug? Also I don"t think crack was even around back in 1977. If it was we never heard of it till mid late 80"s
I used to have "the original modern lovers", where this version was released. Also stolen. Searching around the net, I have bumped into I wanna sleep in your arms", "dance with me" and roadrunner (alernate version) (e-mule). I haven't been able to get any version of "don't let our youth go to waste". Anyone knows?
. There's an abomial... is on: Radio On! Cd 1; on "Rocking and ROmance". (e-mule or Ares -free and fuck the record industry)
Man, those are some hard words. You're really tough on the vocab. So you've never abbreviated anything before while on the internet? Now THAT'S rock 'n' roll.
Nope, Modern Lovers are from Boston, but when jonathan richman was 18 he moved to New York and slept on the couch of the Velvet Underground's Manager.
Modern Lovers and Jonathan Richman is kind of a new acquaintance for me. A bartender played a CD last time I was there drinking beer. "She Cracked" was so great to see and hear and it really speaks for me in a nice sort of way, to nearly all the girls I know around here. Don't understand them, either.
Really great animation! There seem to be a few focus problems. Not sure if it happened in filming or in transfer to video. Regardless, very well done.
It's on a CD called THE ORIGINAL MODERN LOVERS. NOw, whether it's still in print - my copy that I got some years ago was, I think, a bit dodgy in terms of pedigree. I THINK I read it got released recently with slightly better sound...
