  • Really interesting video!

It looks like it took years to make!

  • thumbs up. Great to see there's still creativity around.

  • Really great to hear this version of the song, and your animation is a worthy interpretation of the song. Kudos.

  • @frank02111 lol

  • Great vid! Well done... (classic version of this song too!)

  • Fantabulous animation!

  • Great 1972 punk rock sound. What a pioneer ol' Johnny was...loved how he dared to be antithesis to everything hippie. Later "punks" really destroyed what guys like Johnny perfected between about 1970-75.

  • esto es para mis amigos los Sedados, en especial para Bimbo jajaja, bromita men ! escucha a esta banda que es de lo mejor MODERN LOVER!

  • She cracked, I'm sad, but I won't ...

  • Please use your talents and animate other Modern Lovers songs. This is so well done, I keep coming back to it! And this version of She Cracked is SO much better than the one on the album.

  • Hot damn this made my day!

  • Great video, totally goes with the song.

  • One of Jonathan's best songs. He doesn't like singing this live for some reason. It sounds a little like Iggy & the Stooges.

  • love it

  • dbritt4, Bravo!

  • Love it! Good job.

  • good job dbritt4. Love it!

  • Love it. Good job dbritt4!

  • So Spectacularamazingawesomesupercoolgreatfuckingradtasmicforevaandevaandeva!

  • SWEET

  • Kinks,Velvets,MC5,Stooges were all partly responsible, but this is surely the first thinking persons "Punk" record.. Television,Saints,Buzzcocks,Fall,Wire, etc must have been taking note..

  • Great post. Excellent music. Such clever animation! That ashtray and coffee cup stuff is a new classic.

  • I love this song! Awesome animation!

  • Kool

  • The definitive link between The Modern Lovers and The Stooges. The next stop for this riff was Pop Will Eat Its Self's Def Com One.

  • fantastic song and animation!

  • Amzing!

  • old school stop motion like i love it

  • Yeah! That is great.

  • great imagery and animation. love the ashtray

  • Using Paper Things Like Not Paper Things.

  • love it!

  • most excellent

  • excellent job on the video!

  • Rad.

  • Nice animation, man!

  • this sounds like an influence on black flag

  • Great song and perfect video for it!

  • this sounds really punk-like for its time

  • great animation!

  • god, the drumming to SO good.

  • Love the animation, very cool. Great song, too, of course ...

  • Still up. As it should be. Great track

  • this is actually from 1972 not the sixties-

  • FINE !!!

  • cool as man.. noice

  • Uh this is from the sixties.Once again you fail with ignorance. And this band was pretty much responsible for the entire genre of punk.Guess what icp is responsible for?Absolutely nothing other than being a joke to anyone that likes real music.

  • Well, late sixties/early seventies. This was an amazing band that pretty much imploded on the eve of success. Jonathan Richman made excellent music after that, but if these guys could have stayed together, oh the music they'd have made...

  • i cant really say it any better then OrchidOxycodone

do some research and even if you dont like the mordern lovers respect their roll in rock historyy

  • or is it their rock in roll history?! ;)

crackin' video, mate- do I detect a Svankmajer influence in the animation? :D

  • hahah nice

  • yeah i love svankmajer, but when i made this i hadn't seen his films. the animator robert breer was a pretty big influence on this one though.

  • Awesome work. I'd also never heard this early version of "She Cracked." Nice!

  • Early? This one is from 1973. The official one (from the Modern Lovers' debut) was from 1972. So this is the late version. Which was not chosen to be released. By the way: they already played this song live in 1970!!!

  • It is right and fitting and proper and helpful for salvation.

  • ***** STARS AND FAVORITE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE

    p.s bEST VIDEO IDEA!

  • Wow that was DAMN GOOD and fit the song perfectly! Excellent work, dude! This is good enough to be an "official" music video!

  • Great song and very good vid.

  • Punk before it was called punk!!! And Boston's own!!

  • Really good video.

  • Who did the vid?

  • i did the video in 2004 for a school project.

  • Wow! Very cool. Hope you do this for a living. Nice blending of visual and musical.

  • anyone know where i can download this song? I've googled it and all i can find is the album version- which is not as cool as this one is.

  • there´s 2 mixes of the demos- John Cale´s and Kim Fowley´s

you are too lazy to ask for this here when wikipedia exists, but anyway, here you have it.

my advice: Long live Kim Fowley !

  • I'm not lazy, as i said, i looked it up. Sorry i didn't look in the correct place. Why does every single person on youtube have to give some "holier than thou" answer to everything i post?

  • i don't think fowley's demos have ever been released officially, so you just have to keep searching...i'd try some torrent sites or keep googling until you find a live blog post.

  • rough trade done a decent garage rock comp with this tune on, so i think they have come out.

  • funny! chec

  • this version is so much cooler than the one on the album

  • In April 1972, the Modern Lovers traveled to Los Angeles where they held two demo sessions; the first was produced by the Velvet Underground's John Cale for Warner Bros. while the second was produced by Alan Mason for A&M. The Cale sessions were later used on the bands debut album. While in California the band also performed live, and one gig at the Long Branch Saloon in Berkeley was later issued as a live album.Kim Fowley courted the band, traveling to Boston to produce some demos in June 1972

  • Is this ROCK AND ROLL

    Liam Lynch?

Could I say PUNK ROCK is this,

    and get away with it?

    Oh, who care's anyway right?

I could listen to this song all night,

and it would still BE tasty, in the morning.

  • Yes, this is totally 'punk' - what an awesome song and 1972 as well!

  • I've been posting songs and I keep getting replies about the modern lovers. Will someone tell me what they think. I'm not begging...Well I suppose begging isn't so bad. I mean it's not like stealing. I suppose borrowing has a one-up one it. Ok. I'm begging on bended intangible knees.

  • Could anyone put the album version on YouTube? This version is great, but as far as I can remember so is the album version. Much obliged!

  • Great version! But why is it called "She Cracked -- 1977 demo"? It was recorded in 1973 (produced by Kim Fowley). There is an even earlier version by the way, recorded in 1972 (produced by John Cale), which later on was used on the band's debut album. It was already on the band's setlist in 1970! Very innovative song, extremely influential to later pop music. Calling this the 1977 demo therefore is a bit pity.

  • You misread: it's called the 1972 demo.

  • Originally, before I wrote my comment, it was called the 1977 demo. After that dbritt4 changed the title...

  • I think its better than the album version. kind of... cooler.

  • And do those guys REALLY think this song is about crack? It was written in like, 1973!!!

  • This is fuckin batshit cool! Long Live The Modern Lovers! Even if Jonathan R. is a bit of a douchebag...

  • cool video pictures just melt into more creative jestures!!

  • best homemade vid on youtube- fact !!

do I detect a Jan Svankmajer influence? :D

  • Great version of a great song ,also love the video, especially the ashtray and the dog .5 stars

  • Cool song and very suprizing. It seems to be about crack and it shows ciggarett ashse.I always thought Richman was anti-drug? Also I don"t think crack was even around back in 1977. If it was we never heard of it till mid late 80"s

  • Nah - 'She Cracked' - means she went crazy, insane

  • this video was made by me in 2005, it has nothing to do with crack, and i dont think the song does either. anyway thanks for the comments guys.

  • @frankhattre The song isn't about crack and he was anti-drug

  • You rock, hippie Johnny!

  • Oh so cool. It dosent get any better.

  • awesome shit!

  • I used to have "the original modern lovers", where this version was released. Also stolen. Searching around the net, I have bumped into I wanna sleep in your arms", "dance with me" and roadrunner (alernate version) (e-mule). I haven't been able to get any version of "don't let our youth go to waste". Anyone knows?

. There's an abomial... is on: Radio On! Cd 1; on "Rocking and ROmance". (e-mule or Ares -free and fuck the record industry)

  • Used to have this recording...stolen...Have never been able to find another one. Good vid. THe song brings back lots of memories.

    THxs

  • It would be so awesome if you did one for "The UFO Man"

  • i have seen this video a zillion times...!

    real cool...

i cant find this recording though, any suggestions??

    thanx!

  • Y'know for someone who wrote out a whole comment using full words, it makes you look like a complete retard writing thanks with an 'x' at the end.

  • Man, those are some hard words. You're really tough on the vocab. So you've never abbreviated anything before while on the internet? Now THAT'S rock 'n' roll.

  • yeah cool video!

  • fantastic video!!

  • where do i find 'theres an abominal snow man in the supermarket' by jonathan richman

  • Jonathan was a 'runner' for the velvet underground

  • oh you did the video? great job!

  • woooow! thxalot for posting, amazing sound. richman almost topped the velvets. or did he?

  • no. he didn't.

  • Very well done. A great introduction for me to both the Modern Lovers and your work. Keep it up/

  • Way fuckin cool

  • Really creative and smart. Good stuff.

  • look up "roundup- the transistors" to see a good cover of this song.

  • This is what we want! Great stuff. All the comparisons with Velvet underground are spot on, loved them both.

  • my god this demo version is my absolute fav song from them

  • this demo was from john cale ??

  • This is, I think, the Kim Fowley produced version (not the John Cale one).

  • this is the shit , the echo n the bunnymne version live is killer as well , velvet n the lovers rules !!

    best wishes from peru

  • so cool! i love your stuff!

  • modern lovers sounds like the velvet but i like them bolth ... they from the same area in NYC ?

  • Nope, Modern Lovers are from Boston, but when jonathan richman was 18 he moved to New York and slept on the couch of the Velvet Underground's Manager.

He Loved em. Lovers and Underground are the shit

  • Modern Lovers and Jonathan Richman is kind of a new acquaintance for me. A bartender played a CD last time I was there drinking beer. "She Cracked" was so great to see and hear and it really speaks for me in a nice sort of way, to nearly all the girls I know around here. Don't understand them, either.

  • Oh yeah...love the track and the video rocks!

  • One of the best things I've seen on You tube. Very creative and just amazing. I love the Modern Lovers!

  • loved the interplay of paper and objective reality - especially pouring coffee the line drawing cup

  • why do i know this song apart from being a modern lovers track, did iggy do a version

  • Siouxsie and the Banshees did - Half Japanese did - maybe Iggy did too, live or something?

  • COOL!

  • this is what makes youtube perfect

  • The Modern Lovers is one of my all-time favorite bands. Good work.

  • Really great animation! There seem to be a few focus problems. Not sure if it happened in filming or in transfer to video. Regardless, very well done.

  • Wow - people really love you video dan, don't you think you should make another - whats it been, a year?

  • Fantastic. Great song, too, and I never heard that version. But really. This must have taken forever.

    Thank you.

  • Very nice!

  • Goddamn it! I love creative people! Excellent! Mr Richman(Modern Lovers) were incredible as well. Thanks for the vid.

  • Too cool man, found this via Jonathan Richman.

    Really enjoyed this.

  • Modern Lovers are the best!

  • i want more modern lovers too!!

  • wher can i find this demo version of she cracked!

  • It's on a CD called THE ORIGINAL MODERN LOVERS. NOw, whether it's still in print - my copy that I got some years ago was, I think, a bit dodgy in terms of pedigree. I THINK I read it got released recently with slightly better sound...

  • I love this!

  • top class my man - "put down your cigarettes, and drop out of high school"

  • love it - cheers

  • thats the most creative vid i've seen yet on you tube

  • Amazing stuff. Tons of talent on it. Thanks a lot!

  • Need some ROADRUNNER footage
