I now understand why it's called the last remant. It wasn't 'what', but 'who', and Rush was the last one.

This reminds me of the ending in Final Fantasy VI, when the destruction of Kefka and the three esper gods ended with the magic around the world forever, and Terra's esper heritage, turning her into a normal human girl.
