  • Nice car PIECE OF SHIT MOTOR.

  • Nice! Keep it original!

  • its all about the TQ not the HP

  • I'm getting one for free!!!

  • No matter what era we're in, the firebird always looks awesome.

  • i always heard crossfire had alot of problems

  • @3rd4thgenFbody the only problem i have is inconsistant idle..... that said... you can port the intake manifold and add to the over all performance... the problem is that gm were already working on tpi before they threw together crossfire... so it wasnt ever really designed to be anything but a short term bridge between port innjection and carb motors...

  • Thats Sound

    Thats Style

    Thats a Car

  • AUTOMATIC HAHAHAHA lol.

  • Nice Car BRo!!!!

  • After 1981, there were no more Trans Am's

  • I have an 82TA it came with the 305 crossfire, I still have it tucked away in my shop, I replaced the 305 with a 383 went to a turbo 350 , 3.73 gears, dart heads, and all the other goodies, my best run so far 12.20 at 119mph, if I could do it over I think I would have gone with a 3.8 turbo like the 86, still fuel injected, a 4spd and hp would be easer to come bye, just my .02 worth, but hell they are butiefull cars that turn heads, not many of them around anymore.

  • beautiful car my friend! engine is sooo clean!!

  • hahaha 80s cars are soo ugly

  • @eclipse10101 na your just ugly

  • @87irocz350TPI i kinda just ment early 80s cars i like 86s and up

  • Yeah my stock '83 Mustang with the 302 puts out only about 175 horsepower... I'm gonna work on it as soon as I get the money; nice car by the way.

  • WOW....240 lbs/ft torque..bad ass.

  • One thing I still don't understand, and can't find the answer to: isn't a dual-TBI setup like the kind found in late '80s F-bodies/pickups effectively the same thing as Crossfire injection?

  • General Motors executives decided the 3rd Generation of the F-body was to be concerned with handling performance, not high horsepower and torque numbers. Early in its development, both the Firebird and Camaro were proposed as possible front wheel drive platforms, but the idea was scrapped in favor of the traditional front engine, rear wheel drive layout.

  • The car was built during a tough time in the auto industry. They were afraid if they made v8s suck up too much gas they would not sell. Much like today. The oil crisis was only a few years previous. That is some of the reasoning behind the 165 horsepower. I owned an 82 trans am it may not have high horse power but i tell you it is an amazing car. Dont forget 240 lbs of torque is alot.

  • Nice car, glad to see someone else takes care of their '82. I have an '82 Recaro, an '82 with a 4 speed, and an '83 SE.

  • I posted a short video of my 1982 Ponitac Trans Am Crossfire Injection Engine

  • can someone tell me what the top speed of a 82 trans am is with a 1979 301v8 with 2 bbl and 3 speed automatic trans. (orginal car was a pontiac catalina and produced about 135hp sad but true) because my speedometer only goes to 85mph and im curious to know if the lighter car makes a difference with that engine and its not the 301 turbo from the 80s

  • the old f body firebird/camaro these cars were ahead of there time in styling back then but they was NOT noted for power! Honestly nothing was back in the early 80's nothing was really going on under the hood until about 85 on these although the 83-84 305 H.O 4 bbl put out 190 hp and they didn't run bad at all.

  • hey, im not tryin to hate on this car or anything...but 165 hp with a 5.0 seems really low, maybe its cuz i dont know a lot about older cars, the car sounds really good though

  • Today 165 horsepower is nothing, back in 1982, 165 horsepower was a powerful V8. The average V8 in 1982 was around 120 to 145 horsepower. These were dark days. The base motor on the Trans Am/Camaro Z28 was the LG4, rated at 145 horsepower. The (302 CID) 5.0 liter 2V H.O. in the 1982 Mustang GT was 157 horsepower (the automatic 1982 Mustang GT had a 120 horsepower 4.2 liter 2V V8). The 1982 Corvette had the L83 5.7 (350) Cross-Fire V8 (200 horsepower). In light of this 165 was pretty good.

  • ive seen a 1977 pontiac trans am 400hp (DEFINATELY not stock). People were talking shit to me cuz they thought i meant 400 stock hp lol. it only had like 210 stock at the most.

  • With all those traffic jams due to the steadily increasing traffic you've got today, you DONT NEED more horsepower.

  • @ericpetersautos Nie car.. I used to have the 83 TranAm with the cross fire injection.... I'll have to dig up an old vid of the car & put it on youtube..... I also had a 1974 firebird with a 350.... I miss both cars.... an 84 year year old woman ran a stop sign & totaled the 74 Firebird... I sold the 83 when I got married in 2000... RIP Pontiac

  • @ericpetersautos 165 was really good in '82, considering the 305 TBI in '91 was only rated at 170hp, so it gained 5hp in 9 years.

  • @ericpetersautos its a good thing there are engines around today to swap into these older cars to make them what they should of been.

  • @ericpetersautos The 1982 GT had a 5.0 liter (the anemic 4.2 was in the '81 Cobra) and it consistently smoked the Z28 and Trans Am with the Cross-Fire Infected engine. I know, I had an '82 TA. After 2.5 years of barely keeping up with traffic I traded it on an '85 Tuned Port Injected TA. Much better in every way. Still, the '82 was a gorgeous car to look at.

  • @ericpetersautos Back in the 80s most of the engines were de-tuned for economy and emissions. my 1985 F250 with a 351w sits at 136hp/310ft*lbs, it's just a high torq low reving motor.

  • @ericpetersautos These motors really were made with emissions in mind. However, the 305 is no slouch as many would say. It is very easy to wake these motors up with just a simple performance cam and heads. Do that and bam now u got 40-60+ more horspepower and a shit load more torque. The 305 can be made a very powerful engine w/ $500 or less depending on what type of parts u choose

  • @lamiac2411 its in no way cost effective to build a 305... but that doesnt mean alot of us havent done so... though... it being a powerful engine for 500 or less is definately stretching it...

  • @Bluesypunkrocker1 Ya i'm talking about doing it all yourself Lol. Sure it would cost the same to wake up a 350 and u would get more bang for your buck. I'm just generalizing someone who may have a 305 and doesn't wanna go through the trouble of a swap. But ya dollar for dollar you miht as well go w/ a 350

  • @lamiac2411 doing it all yourself it still wont be anywhere near $500 and powerful... no sense in a cam without headers, that combo alone will cost the $500. no point in headers without a better exhaust, no point in any of it if your still breathing through a straw.. which means port/polish of heads... alot of these 305 heads arent worth the port/polish.... so you're in for the cost of the heads... i built a 305 crossfire (heh) but it was just to keep it original..

  • @lamiac2411 that said, i bought a 400 small block for 300$ and some gaskets... so... the swap is almost always cheaper than even playing with the 305..

  • @ericpetersautos yeah but the 83 trans am were available with 190 hp 305 v8 (h.o) 4bbl which were stronger. I remember my friend had a 82 camaro z28 with that cross fire 305 man that thing was a pig but it was damn sharp looking car. I had a 84 mercury cougar ls with a stock 5.0 with throttle body injection. I used to dust him from stop light. good times!!!!!!

  • @ericpetersautos oh by the way that's a clean 82 trans am you got. Keep it original and stock!!!!!

  • @ericpetersautos They actually had to design these for less output due to the gas crisis back then. The Trans Am became lighter with a smaller engine and less output. The V-8s before the 305 were monsters, gas guzzling and high output. But, the older cars were much heavier. Even so, the older ones from the 70's were much quicker. Some companies went the turbo route to deal with the gas crisis.

  • @Mike85220 Don't get me wrong, I had a 305 4 barrel and a 305 HO and it was fun. The first was an 86 TA and the other was an 87 IROC Z.

  • @ericpetersautos Actually...most cars in the late seventies to early eighties had low horsepower ratings because of all of the emissions equipment that became standard in the midst of the fuel crisis. Catalytic converters and such dropped horsepower. Also horsepower ratings were originally gross but now they are net. Gross means that they were taken from an engine with no equipment on it, net is with the equpment and the engine driving the car. Kinda like a dynomometer. Great car. Love it!

  • @Chase1095 Actualy Net HP is the engine on a stand with all engine accesories (A/C, P/S, Alternator, water pump, ect) and a full exhaust system. There will be a drop in power when put in a car due to losses by the trans and rear (or tranaxle), roughly 20% loss. but the HP in the car could also be higher due to the vehicle its in. Gross HP was the engine on a stand with no engine accesories, no air cleaner and open headers. They still don't rate them on a chassis dyno yet. Wish they did.

  • @ericpetersautos very nice, I think those crossfire motors are neat.

  • @cthiess19 that was good for older cars man the fastest 80s cars had 230hp

  • @cthiess19 old engines were pretty bad

  • @cthiess19 After the mid seventy's was oil crisis, and all of the car manufacturers had to tone down there engines to get better fuel economy. Before this was the muscle car age and cars like the camaro and firebird were sporting V8s that push up to over 300 horsepower. So people were used to there performance cars having nearly 400 horsepower. So it is false to say tht 165 hp was a powerful V8. I am not hating on these thirdgens either, I have a 1988 Firebird formula 5.0 305 TPi and I love it!

  • @cthiess19 its mainly about TORQUE like ericpetersautos said, hp was lower, but TORQUE was higher, more low end, better lift off, just slow getting to the top end, i like torque over hp, hp is for sparkly smiles and people to go "WOW THATS ALOT" where torque is what gets it up to hall some ass, i have a 320hp BMW 540i 4.4 V8 its a BEAST!!! but its not the hp, its the torque, my 0-60 is 4 seconds, anyways, I WANT A TPI 80's TRANS AM!!!

  • @cthiess19 Cars back then were tuned for economy. Some people back then cared more about getting good gas mileage over how much HP the vehicle puts out.

  • @cthiess19 you think that's bad? in 78 the 5.7s were only making 165 hp. lol. the reason for that being that the epa had passed regulations after 1970 that killed power. a mild cam swap would bring it over 250 hp :p

  • Ive seen that same cross fire injection system in some C3 Corvettes.... Thanks for keeping it stock btw...

  • 168 horsepower?? sounds like a bitch mobile

  • Beautiful car XD

  • How many rpm does the car idle at when warm? Thanks

  • isn't cross fire injection a duel tbi set up? not a fuel injection system! thats the was it was on the L83 at least, not sure about the 305 though.

  • Correct cross-fire was a dual TBI system however it is a fuel injection system. In fact this cross-fire '82 Trans Am came from the factory with "fuel injection" door handle plaques. And when the L83 was introduced in 1982 on the Corvette, Chevrolet touted in its ads - the return of fuel injection to the Corvette. TBI is no longer available on new cars it long ago was replaced by fuel rail "port" fuel injection type systems.

  • yea thats what i thought. they were cool cars i want to pick up a few down the road and re-do them, but also have a couple 4th gen f-bodies to play with too. tks for the response

  • @ericpetersautos you mean direct injection?

  • I had a Silver 1982 Trans Am just like this as my first car. Unfortunately, by the time I got it, my parents had let it grow very tired and rusted out. But dang did I love that car. I had to eventually get rid of it and now I have a 1979 TA. But I have always wanted to get back into one of these. Mine was just like this, but not in as good shape. Great car!

  • Does the crossfire engine seem to have alot of power? Whats the top speed do you think your car will do?

  • In 1982 the top speed was around 106 mph. If the trans am would've had a pontiac motor in it i'm sure it woulda been quicker. But still the 82 is my favorite year ta. Im dieing for a recaro edition with the 145hp 305 for my first car! And im leaving it stock cuz the cars perfect the way it is

  • Hey, there! That is a pretty sweet looking firebird. I have a serious question cause im fixing up my dads trans am with him, and we are stuck with one big problem. The car simply wont idle. As soon as we let go of the gas the rpms will dive and the car dies. Ive been thinking it has to do something with the choke. When the car is started the choke light comes on then goes away then when the car dies it comes on and stays on. Does this support my thought of it being the choke malfunctioning?

  • They're just so slick! I love my '83. Just vintage enough to be considered vintage and really cool, but new enough to have modern conveniences. Great car.. and yours is very nice as well!

  • The reason for ceasefire is due to the lack of performance from the manifold. That sounds good anyway. I do not know when or where it started from. As far as common problems go the main thing is fueling in general and the TBs. The TB shafts get worn and cause vacuum leaks and more often that not the fuel pressure is low. We recommend 14-15lbs for Crossfire motors. For what it is worth, you can make a dual TB system (crossfire) run quite well and strong.

  • I too have seen those issues on a few cross-fire systems. However that's small potatoes compared to the issues older qjet 4bbls have - they need constant care and attention. I believe Jeff Koch a former writer at HPP coined the phrase ceasefire. You are right the weak link in the crossfire system is its restrictive heads and intake. Did you ever see the aftermarket x-ram intake which increased intake flow to 1200 cfm on the LU5 and L83 crossfire V8s? The company is now defunct unfortunately.

  • Yeah I heard of them and it is a shame they went under.

but sadly the CrossFire gets a bad reputation

  • are these crossfire engines good? i have one and it seems ok? how rare are they? and how much HP do they have stock and would it be loud with a flowmaster??

  • the Crossfire is rare and they are as reliable as the Northstar V8. it is one of GM's most problematic engines.I own a 1983 trans am crossfire it runs like a tiger.

  • Factually incorrect. Cross-fire is a very reliable system. The TBI units were very reliable in fact more reliable than the carbs of the same vintage. The only disadvantage to the Cross-Fire system is it's hard to modify. The most problematic GM engines were the 16 valve OHC Cosworth 4-cylinder in the 1970s Vegas and the 5.7 liter Olds Diesels.

  • it is when you get the kinks out :)

it is nick named the CeaseFire for a reason :)

yeah gasoline diesel conversion motor the Oldsmobile diesel

  • What kinks?

The system is computer controlled (very reliable). The Rochester TBI units are reliable.

The computer controlled IAC motors are very reliable. Mine has been in the family since new, and the Cross Fire system has worked reliably for the last 27 years. If my T/A had the LG4 4bbl 305 the carb would have had at least 3 rebuilds in that same time. My TBI units have never been rebuilt and the whole system is the same as it was the day it left the dealer lot when it new.

  • 1982 - 165 horsepower / 240 lbs/ft of torque

    1983 - 175 horsepower / 250 lbs/ft of torque

Flowmaster exhaust systems sound very good with the cross-fire system. How loud depends on which flowmaster series muffler you get.

  • BTW "ceasefire" was given to the system due to its lower power output compared to the later TPI cars.

  • Great car! I got an 82 too and I've replaced the 305 engine(4bbl carb)with a 350 goodwrench...It runs great now...I need to do some body work...

  • I have a black 89 Firebird Formula WS6 with the Borg Warner 5 speed and 9 bolt rear. Has 67k original miles. The 3rd gens are becoming the next classic car. It's hard to find them in original condition. They are worth holding onto if they are in great shape.

  • mikenyesi123 6 flat in a 4 door not that fast

  • the night rider thing is gay as a fucking homo

  • Please don't turn this into KITT, its been done a billion times. Leave this rolling jewel as stock as possible.

  • nice car...why don't you make knight rider kitt replica?

  • Yeah...He should make it. He even already has those Turbocast wheels.

  • Very nice. This is my dream car, but hard to find in Germany.

  • How many of you have banged your head on one of those dashboard

  • I would pick this 305 V8 over a Honda Accord V6 anyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Torque, V8 burble, balls.

  • these cars are slow, back then in there time they were fast but now adays its like a honda accord

  • so wat u tryin to say is u don;t know nothing about these cars and don;t know how to make them go "faster"....honda...LOL honda..AHahaha.wat a joker...or jackass.

  • the 1982 trans am with the crossfire fuel injection was the wort motor that they made. im talking about stock the car is slow and very slow for a v8 5.0 305 motor. it just had alot of torque but not much speed. and i am 100 percent positive that my maxima will smoke that thing my dad has this car and u cant compare speeds my maxima feels 10 times faster then his trans am. even he says it

  • i beat max and altimas in a 2.0 v4 and know for a fact that ur daddys car must be fucked up badly nad needs work...i own a 89 firebird and a 87Gta t/a and there is no way a fuckin import "without" 20.000 under the hood beat my allmotor.!

  • first of all know ur engins its a 4 cylinder not a v4 and i dunno how much shyt u got doe to ur tiny 4 cylinder cuz u will never in ur life stock beat my 3.5 maxima and my dads is an 1983 it has 72,000 miles its lke mint condition, those v8's were low output motors there werent fast at all. maybe in there time against all those older cars there were fast but now they wont take anyting

  • Dawg i rip teh SER alitmas like nothing and to me they got more ballz than the max..simply cuz they 300ibs less...stop thinkin that all trans am is like ur daddys broken one plz. my base Firebird se only has 245 hp no boost and only $300 under my hood

  • mao bro fyi my dads trans am is completly mint nothing is wrong ith the engine 70,000 miles for an 1983 trans am thats amazing, so its not broke down thats one. two i dont know what year ur fire bird is. 3 i highly doubt u take ser,s id like to see that and if u cant take an ser u wont take me because im basically rght next to ser's once at high speeds 300 pounds makes very little difference.

  • 11/01/08 imm racin a 05 ser altima for his R1 i got my Gsx-R on the line..all the nissan got me on is the takeoff after that babybee he's done.! and plz lets leave the the 4door cars for the family drivin...and look it up the ser is faster than the max u made the wrong choice to start with clearly don't know ur car.. ser= "500lb" less than fully loaded max with more nizmo parts out the factory..we can do this all day lets do it the e-z way..GOT PINKS? race way park in NJ wheneva u ready.!

  • wtf do are u telling me about anything the original convo was about the trans am plus i know for sure my maxima will smoke my dads trabs am.

  • do you have any clue what yer talking about torque is what moves you down tha road torque is what you feel when you gas on it torque is what puts you back in the seat so if it has alot of torque then it will have quick acceleration this car has 240 lbs/ft of torque more than your maxima im sure and yes your dads with low miles could be broke i dont care how mint it is it can still have a problem with the engine restrictive exhaust plugged up cats bad injector timeing off and alot more

  • bro shut the fuck up....seriously have u raced a 04 maxima against and 82 trans am? odds are that u probably havent. these cars are not fast at all. google a stock 1982 trans am 0-60 it comes out to 7. sumtin seconds i dont remeber exactly. and that is slow... my max does 6 flat for a 4 door car that is fast im right next to g35's.

  • i actually have raced a maxima in a stock 84 trans am but it is still the 5.0 engine. it wasnt close the companies for one lied about performance ratings on the older cars to keep insurances rates down and also even if they are accurate(which they are not) the trans am really takes off after about 50 when the double barrel carbs fully open

  • yea but by the time it kicks in at 50 the maxima is already gone compared to these older 1982-83 trans ams. and the performance ratings are acurate because i tested it out myself. i dont just read the thing and belive it i try it out myself.

  • swap in a zz4 350

  • I used to have one of these. Damn I miss that sound.

  • nice/rare bird. I didn't think you were gonna get on it. that was a nice surprise.

  • That bird is beautiful!

  • Do you have it for sale?

  • how much was the car

  • Very nice...

  • hmmm those crappy ratings for 80´s v8s, you should modify your engine to better power, beautifull car ...go kit!

  • beau-t-ful!

  • These cars would've come out with the 301 Turbo if it weren't for GM but still, the 305 Cross-Fire is a good powerplant

  • I'll take a chevy 305 over a pontiac 301 any day. The 305 is pretty lame, but at least it doesn't have siamesed intake runners...

  • 1983PontiacTransAm is correct Pontiac had intended on a 200 hp 301 turbo V8 to be the '82 T/A's performance engine. However GM cancelled the 301 during the 1981 model year.

    Whack78 - for 1982 the 301 Turbo would have been a more high peformance motor than the 305 LU5. As a comparison the '82 LU5 had 165 horsepower/ 240 lbs/ft torque vs. the LU8 301 with 200 horsepower/ 340 lbs/ft torque.

  • wacker

  • Nice car! I have an 82 Trans Am with the Cross Fire engine and only 32,000 miles.

One question: my car runs great after about the first minute, but runs a bit rich on startup. I've changed the temp sensor and the MAP sensor, but that didn't help. The injectors aren't dripping either. Any idea on what may be causing my problem? I was thinking maybe a stuck IAC valve.

  • What are the symtoms that you are having when it starts running rich? Do the rpms drop or rise. Are you spark plugs fouling (carbon deposits)? This will happen when the engine is running rich.

  • I have all new Delco, plugs, wires, dist. cap & rotor on the car, I reset the timing, and it has new MAP, oxygen, and coolant temp sensors.

The RPMs don't really rise and fall, I can just tell that it's running a bit rich. I checked the IACs yesterday and they're both moving in/out, so they're fine.

Compression is great on all cylinders, and so is the oil pressure.

Maybe the TPS is misadjusted? The car runs great after the first 30 seconds.

  • Cross-Fire tends to run a little rich at startup. What problems do you have the first 30 seconds. Sounds like everything else is functioning properly.

  • It was a misadjusted TPS. I reset it to 0.525 volts at idle. Runs great now.

  • Nice vid, i have an 84 Trans Am with the carbed motor. Nice to see another one of these beasts in good shape. ;]

  • Thanks. 1984 T/As are great looking T/As. Does your T/A have the L69 4bbl or LG4 4bbl motor? Does your '84 T/A have the aero package?

You are right too many of these early 3rd generation T/As took a beating (same is true with most cars of this era), so not many nice original ones left.

  • LG4 4bbl, aero package, WS6.

The 305's pretty fast despite what people say.

Those crossfire motors are really rare, and they'll get even more rare as people do engine swaps. Clean 305 f-bodies will probably go way up in value.

It's nice to see that someone else doesn't just beat theirs up and mod everything.

  • Very good points. I agree the 305 3rd gen f-bodies will go up in value over time. I am seeing some of the nice original early 3rd gens starting to rise in value recently - especially the 1983 Daytona Pace Car edition Trans Am. The 2nd generation Trans Ams were dirt cheap 10-15 years ago, now they are very pricey. I think in the next few years the 3rd generation T/As will see the same type of rise in value.

  • I also have a 82 Trans Am with the LU5 Crossfire Injection engine, great car!

  • Thanks for the positive feedback. Nice 1982 Trans Am that you have there.

  • The LU5 cross-fire was one of the hottest/fastest motors available back in 1982. Most people forget anything that went 0-60 mph in less than 10 seconds in 1982 was a fast car. The '82 LU5 Trans Am was good for 0-60 mph in 8.89 seconds (Motor Trend 1/82). Finally the LU5 is getting the credit it deserves.

  • I bought an '84 vette with Crossfire F/I some years ago. CFI was cutting edge for it's day and wasn't understood well by gearheads who'd been raised on carburetion. Its tragic that it was unappreciated both then and now. It's a good concept.

In my research I've come across a company selling a vastly improved intake manifold for CFI cars like ours. Google search "X-ram intake manifold".

  • Good video, I also have a 82 Trans Am, with a LU5 Crossfire engine. Great car!
