  • I met them when they came to South Bend. Indiana..

  • The original "The Lion Sleeps" song! Long before Mirriam Makeba, long before it became aweemawe. Take it from this old South African. Like Mirriam's version too though. My 79yr old mom use to sing this as a girl!

  • True African spirit on the song

  • This music is so beautiful!!!! How can anybody dislike this!?!?!?!?! There should be an option available for disliking those who dislike!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic. How can anyone dislike this??

  • those 4 are disliking dumbs

  • those 4 are dumbs

  • Is it true this song is about breasts?

  • I love the Mahotella Queens "Baqanga" version of this great traditional song first written and sung by Solomon Linda ... before being "stolen" and made popular for Western audiences - albeit with a bastardised translation of this great song ... That Miriam Makeba, Mahotella Queens and Ladysmith Black Mambazo have reclaimed it is a great victory and recognition of our immense talent ...

  • Truly inspirational! This is the what the internet is for - showcasing how wonderful the human race can be.

  • @falconbluesky1 true isralite women bless by the most high with talent beyond compare.

  • i'm sorry to ask this..but do you have the song "DON'T BE LATE FOR HEAVEN" sang by the Mahotella Queens from their album Women Of The World...i've been looking for that song but i never seem to find it anywhere..sorry for interrupting but i just wanted to ask you..please write back for answers..thank you

  • Is it true that this song is actually a prayer for the return of Shaka Zulu and that he is the 'sleeping lion'? That's really cool if it is.

  • BARDZO OPTYMISTYCZNA MUZYKA!!!! 5/5

  • If you enjoy this type of music you must listen to Ladysmith Black Mambazo - best mbube group!

  • ngiyabonga

  • Their singing is great, but what's with the horrible background music?

  • My guess is, best financially available tech. I listen to a show called "afropop worldwide" and many songs have this level of tech. Not everyone can afford futuristic tech. Usually, such as here, if the artist themselves are good, the overall product won't really suffer. As we all know way too well, if an artist isn't good, all the technology in the world won't hide it for long.

  • how true. in a way, the lack of tech has the positive effect of leaving unenhanced and exposed the true quality of the performance.

  • Could be a song recorded awhile ago, when that kind of backing music was alright. Maybe? Or as mowgli2071 has suggested, they just didn't have the budget for a better sound.

  • I think the 70s thing is probably more accurate. It must have been the taste back then, because you can't factor in budget as an issue when you recall that Xhosa songs are frequently sung without ANY backing. For my personal taste, I think it would have sounded much better that way, but then I'm not from the 70s ;)

  • south africa makes the bomb music

  • Супер!(SUPER!):)))

  • one of yhe best i ever heardd,

  • I... Love... these... girls... :-)

  • I saw this alive, fantastic

  • Love this song, wish I could speak the Xhosa language.

  • I think this is one of the best versions of this song, almost better than the original.

Well... The Lion Sleeps Tonight, and I'm going to sleep now too. ^_^

  • Fattaman, when you say the "original" what do you mean exactly? cause my studies show that Miriam Makeba's version is the "original"... just wondering...

  • I believe Solomon Linda and his group (can't remember their name) had the "original" version, way back in the 1930's. But of course there is no really original version, as it is an old Zulu folk song. But I believe Solomon's is the earliest recorded version.

  • Linda's group was called "the Evening Birds". And you're right, he came up with this song in 1939. The part that goes "Uyimbube Mama We" was improvised during their third take. He was paid an estimated 10 shillings for Mbube. In '06, his heirs settled for an undisclosed sum in their R10-million copyright claim against Abilene Music. I believe they deserve every penny for such a beautiful song that is said to have logged nearly 3 centuries of continuous airplay in the US alone.

  • I certainly agree with you!

  • 3 Centuries? were you being obtuse? U.S only 2.3 centuries Marconi about 1.2 and the billboards about .6. He came up with the song? Mbube sung for CENTURIES this time it's accurate, and some puke linda capatalizes on it.His heirs should march their simple cracker asses over to the Zulu tribe and say"sorry here's all the money I made Off the song that my dad took from your culture and copyrighted because you knew no better." Evening birds my fuckin ass

  • lmao, what is your problem? No need to disrespect anyone here. First thing, did anyone say that he wrote the song 3 centuries ago, or did I say that it is thought to have received 3 centuries of continuous airplay (i.e. if you add up all the times this song has been played you would end up with a figure close to 300 years). Secondly, Linda was not a "cracker" as you so eloquently put it, nor was any member of The Evening Birds. They were Zulu (-_-). Be well.

  • I do find it somewhat offensive that you say Linda's heirs "should march their simple cracker asses over to the Zulu tribe and say 'sorry here's all the money I made Off the song that my dad took from your culture,' " because he was Zulu, and lived under apartheid for his entire life, and his heirs lived under it for most of their lives. Until the settlement they were destitute, and the suit wasn't filed by them, it was filed on behalf of them by someone who that they should have it.

  • Are you all fucking stupid? the original? That's like being the original La Bamba. Were you there a few hundred years ago when they first sang to dance la bamba?Nope this a an african song that mothers sang to babies before your greatgrandfather was born.Shut up ,original. These are just covers.

  • mightytalon28 you have to forgive these people.

Its just that an african song are so great that so mamy people copy them and change the beat to them. too bad they don't tell them that these are originally AFRICAN MUSICS. For them africa is just a jungle and they don't even know that music such as LA BAMBA are musics made from african songs.

They don't even know that the majority of music in south america are made up with african instruments and rythms.

if u say something they look like crazy

  • Yes they are great! and I love to hear groups like this that do keep it more original instead of trying to make a pop song to sell to ignorant masses.Embrace cultural diversity and respect others heritage. You just might enjoy the process. Peace, talon

  • I think that this song was written by Soloman Linda in the 1939. He sold the rights to it for 10s. and died in poverty. Last I heard, according to British copywrite law the rights revert back to the creator or his/her estate after 25 years so his three daughters received a settlement in 2006 for an "undisclosed amount".

    YOU SIMPLY RULE ..!!

simply the best..!! and I feel good..

  • Can you really say that Mbube was composed by one person?

I was pretty sure that it was an old folk tune to honour the women in the tribes...

Hence the "you're a lion mama"...

    Well, maybe I'm wrong.

  • I was wrong...

  • amazing that a song composed in 1939 by solomon linda,a sowetan,is one of those songs that have been recorded in so many ways and is known throughout the world.Thnx Flo

  • What a lovely track , sweet melody

    Thanks FLORENCOM
