Hello, I have a very important question. I am a guy and I have a strong desire to help people so I think nursing would be a great program to start off with, I actually plan, God willing if I actually get in nursing, to join a foreing program and help people in third world countries. So I was wondering what could help you get accepted into the nursing program? I am barely in high school and I really want to do this, so what would incrase my chances of getting accepted?
@Nebula501713 Start out by making good grades in college. The higher the GPA, the better. Most colleges have programs that weight your eligibility by your GPA and the pre-requisite classes you take before you even start the nursing portion. My advice to you is.. pick a a college that you want to go to. Make good grades in high school so that the chances of you being accepted to that college are favorable. If your university requires taking the SAT, really practice and shoot for the best.
@Nebula501713 When you get into college... continue making those good grades. Keep that GPA high and you will be on your way. Keep the goal in front of you and stay focused. Study Study Study!!!!
Don't do nursing. its an abusive profession. There is so much harassment, bullying, and intimidation in this "career". There is also no nursing shortage.I'm warning everyone I can !
Hi Im Only 15, but i want to become a nurse, i just want some advice about if nursing has a lot of science in it because im not very strong in high school with all my sciences? So would i still have a change of becoming a nurse?
With nursing, you need to take biology. A lot of biology. It is not so bad, a lot of it is memorization. Not too bad. There is a chemistry class or two to take, depending on your schools program. I was scared about the math. When it comes to math you have to know simple math and conversions, but they teach you that in the program. If you are a caring and compassionate person, I strongly encourage you to take nursing, despite your struggle in sciences. If you can get past the math
If you can get passed the math, caring and compassionate nurses are so valuable! If its in your heart, go for it! Don't let something as simple as science get in your way... if you can get passed the classes satisfactory and pass state boards, then you are smart enough to be a nurse and you are fully capable of being a nurse.
Does anyone know why 2 years of prereq's plus 2 1/2 of nursing school only equals an Associates degree? I don't get it......That's more than what most students put toward a bachelor's degree in other subjects.....would be curious to know why this is.....
@journey2xl my school requires us to take all the BSN pre-reqs. It would only take a year for me to get my BSN after. They also make us get A LOT of clinical hands on experience, more than other colleges/universities around here. We take a lot of extra stuff. We have a really high NCLEX pass rate.
how long does it take to get through all the pre reqs if you go to school fulltime? and what about part time? i am getting ready to enroll for classes, am shooting for RN as well.
@larisasmith same here. i was wondering the same thing. the nursing classes where i am at start every fall. i HOPE that i can get the pre reqs done before then.
@larisasmith It took me over 2 years for pre-reqs... the program itself is 2 years after that... and thats only for an associates degree. If I wanted my BA then I would only need to go for about 7 months after that. They make us get as many pre-reqs in as possible, assuming we will be going for a BA.
@FifiChanel05 I am getting my ADN, but I am really wanting to get a Masters as a Nurse Educator or Nurse practitioner.. its still up in the air. I have to make small steps before making big leaps.
I start RN program this August, do u have any tips for how to survive the first year? any DOs or Don'ts ? any advice is welcome.. Good luck on becoming a nurse : )
@omw2012 Don't fall behind on anything. It will only hurt you. Read, read, read most of the things that you are assigned. Don't wait until closer to the test to study. Study the new material as soon as you get it. Always practice your skills, even after you test for them because you will see them over and over and practice makes perfect. Don't argue with your instructors... they give you the grades. Get on their good sides and always always always use teamwork in clinical settings.
Hi, I am now through all my prerequistes and am currently working on my scholar nurse essay. If anyone has any ideas for this 3 page essay ,subject is as a nurse what positive qualities will nursing implement in your life?
@NurseKar2012 I know its a little late for the response. I've just been super busy. A lot of nursing is directed toward teaching your patients, so that they could be included in their own health care. Patients are more knowledgeable now and want to take a role in their own health. Teaching means that you have to stay current in healthcare. That is beneficial for the nurse as well, for her own health. Knowing that you also helped someone improve the quality of their life can be fulfilling.
@mari5496 Its hard work, but it is well worth it. Good luck in your endeavors! I'm probably going to be posting an update this summer. I am currently in the middle of my program. I graduate in a year. I am in my OB courses. Keep an eye out for the updates... they will be coming.
Your videos are really inspiring :) I'm hoping to enroll in a Nursing program not this year, or next year but the year after since I'm already in a program at a College! Thanks for this :)
@xojessi No problem. I plan on updating eventually. Keep at it. You can do it. I know sometimes it will feel as if you will never make it to the end. But keep your chin up and your eyes looking ahead.
Congratulations! I am accepted at a diploma nursing school and am planning to start in the fall. You must be going to a college for an associates degree because of all the electives you mentioned. I had to have many of the prereqs you mentioned, but colleges seem to require a lot of electives that really have nothing to do with the nursing field. How do you have time for study buddies? This is a concern of mine because its hard to collaborate when everybody has crazy schedules.
@nossful Its very hard. Lately, if there is a couple of hours of time to spare before tests, or even the night before, we will put something together after class and meet just to go over things. Its hard work, but you kind of have to seek out who you can and who is available .
Can you believe, we have med-math test on which we have to get a 100, it means no mistakes. 100 is a passing score. During the last semester, you have to pass 2 exams (you can take it 12 times, not 3 times, like during the previous 3 semesters) without a calculator and you have to pass it with a score of 100. Its LIU nursing school... (Sorry for mistakes, if I have any,my Russian is perfect :)) Good luck nursing students!
I can't believe it. I'm almost done with the nursing school. It was tough. I was a full time during my first semester. Im a part time student now and my last exam is on 12/17/09, and thats it! Thats it! No more torture!!!!
Hi....thanks for posting this video. I like hearing from other nursing students going through the same thing. I started the nursing program in August. It's been rough! But I'm doing good so far. Anyway, good luck to you! :)
well at the moment i am trying to get into my schools nursing program and yes i need to acquire pre- req's before i can even apply for the program so yeah thats what i am doing. and also this is my 1st semester in college so pretty fresh. any advice on what classes i might have to take before i can apply?
I needed to take two Anatomy and Physiology classes. A Microbiology. Statistics. English 101 and 102. Needed General Psychology and also Human Growth and Development. I also took Nutrition. You also needed acouple of humanties. I even had taken some previous courses from my old college from a different major. It can be a pretty long process, but courses may vary slightly depending on your school. Goodluck in your endeavors!
No. You do not have to. My school gives you points for every pre-req you take, according to how good your grades are. Being a CNA helps, because they give you a few more points. Which always helps your chances of getting in. However, once you actually get into the nursing program they do give you the skills and the courses so that you could take the state boards to become a CNA. About 5 weeks after that, everyone becomes a PCT! You get certified in many things as you go along.
oh really.. well im trying to get into the nursing program here in san diego.. but at the moment im doing my prerequisites before i even sign up for the program and i have to be CNA certified so yeah.. its going to take a while but i believe i can do it.
Pre-reqs is 2 years. The actual program by itself is a year and a half for RN. So that is about 3 and a half years. That is for an associates degree. If you want to get your bachelors, which I'm planning on doing, it is an additional year. So for a bachelors, it would be 4 and a half years.
Its very hard work, but it will all definitely pay off in the end. I had to take about two years of pre-reqs, but what helped was before that a few years earlier I took pre-reqs at another college when I wanted to be a Chiropractor. So I guess it did take about three years. I know what you mean about drug testing. My school drug tests the entire class periodically. Hope all goes well for you too!
I can't imagine working along with nursing school. Good luck to you. Going to take me a total of 3 years with pre-reqs. Our school can also drop you for a random piss test, for any reason they want. We had 5 tests this week, its been crazy. Getting good grades so far though. I've been studying and reading like crazy. Hope everything goes good for you!!
hey does your school have techniques for weeding out students ??I am always interested in knowing this because its crazy what people can get kicked out for, anyway i am glad i found your videos, i am waiting to start NS in May 10
They are weeding them out alright. They are giving drug tests and really strict with grading. They are very strict with attendance. They watch your every move. We had around 30 some students for this nursing session. The seats are emptying quick!
It ranges every year... according to how well the applicants grades are... i was on the high end. The lowest was in the mid 40s. Hundreds apply and only a few classes get in. I'm so thankful.
