  • I did the atkins for 6 months... but when I went off slowly the fat came on fast

  • @sunsetlover That is what I experienced, too. There is no easy way to 'diet'. It would be so cool to have a magic pill. Take it at night and BAM! in the morning you are the size you want to be! - roc

  • The bird was breathtaking.......I love birdies!! Ty for sharing the photo!! Xo

  • @Ikimification We printed copies of that shot - I think it turned out well! - roc

  • I totally don't remember getting this in my sub box sorry I missed it Roc. I'm really impressed with your efforts and mindset. I've never tried Atkins. It really turned me off for a few reasons so.... I'm here in your cheering section, but I'm really worried about your bp. I just saw today's vlog and then noticed I hadn't seen this one so I'm a bit relieved you are on meds for th bp now. I hope it gets better. Keep strong! (((((Roc)))))

  • @Ikimification Thanks Kim. It is good for us to support each other! The BP pill is making me tired! Apparently, that is a side effect. And it is decidedly unwanted! But, my bp is already a bit lower. That is good!

  • Boy, I don't remember commenting but I did watch this video the other day. Yeah for the Elliptical... good for you! Keep it up!!! Sorry, but you made me giggle with the 20 pound comment, bless your heart! Hugs!

  • @Jinxie228 Martha, on Friday, I made it to 18 minutes, 1.5 miles. I just zoned out on music! - roc

  • @popparoc46 Zoned out is great, well for me anyway!!! Awesomeness roc!!!

  • @Jinxie228 Thanks, Martha. You know, I appreciate YOUR support, too!

  • The elliptical is my fav though pretty tough. I used to do it for 45 minutes too, but now I'd be worn out just crawling up there to set it & turn it on. lol Be sure to take good care of yourself.

    Pam

  • @WillowBranchDesigns Yes the elliptical can be tough! I can feel it in my butt just after a couple of minutes!

    Thanks Pam. - roc

  • I used to work out vigorously but now I just play more tennis. Your husband is right, you have to ramp yourself up because you will find your muscles will be very sore the next day. I will have to investigate the Atkins diet.

  • @onemon22 Tennis is great! It is fast and fun! But, you look fit and ... well, I was going to say "buff" but maybe I shouldn't!!! ;-)

    - roc

  • That bird was out-standing. Really beautiful. Be careful with the calorie count--too low doesn't work just as much as too high. You inspired me to get back to walking. One walk outside and a walking tape inside everyday. I used to walk 2 hours a day 5 years ago so it will take some time to get back to the swing of things. Take it slow and one day at a time.

  • @whitsally Good for you! I want to get back into just walking outside as well. The fresh air is 'way better than the air around the treadmill in the smelly gym!

    - roc

  • Love that vid. Stay strong!!!

  • @Jardinduluxembourg Thanks!! - roc

  • Love your honesty even if it Night

  • @Jardinduluxembourg heh heh - thanks! - roc

  • I hate the elliptical. It wears me out in a couple minutes. Of course, I'm massively obese. I find walking on the treadmill trying enough at this point.

  • @SlackJones1 I managed my ten minutes again today, but it is a struggle. I know it is difficult, but try to keep moving. Every little bit helps. Do what you can and in time you will see a result. I just wish there was a magic pill or something! - roc

  • i don't like working out in public either. that's why im signing up with curves - a gym that only allows women.

  • @Iovcatt I went to interview them at Curves... It is cool that it is only women. The club I go to has three or four locations in my city that is only women, but where I go is only 3 kilometres away. And I ignore the men!!! Good for you to join and start to move! Have fun! - roc

  • I am glad your feeling better about yourself. I must say I enjoy you talking about your adventures in dieting and exercise. I got up this morning made me a cup of coffee lit a cig and thought hell with the walk today. Yours is the first video i've watched and you've reminded me that walking is important. So off to walk I go! BTW did I tell you I bring the baby in the stroller with me. That just makes it super nice!!

  • @DeeNeenee There you go!! They say that walking is, hands down, the best exercise you can do! So keep it up! - roc

  • I am so happy for you Roc, keep up the good work! Id go walk the mall inside but being in so much pain with my knees and not being able to get meds to relive that its a vicious circle for me. I am trying to gather some inspiration from you dear friend. Not good to feel so bad after doing the work out. I hope it helps but think, I couldnt last 5 minutes on low. I try to follow the Adkins diet because it works great for those of us who have diabetes. HUGS and keep up the good work!

  • @WackaDoodleFreeZone Walking the mall is good, Peggy. I do that once in a while, when it is too snowy and slippery outside. The key is to be able to move a little!

Thanks for the support! - roc

  • Don't push yourself too hard, roc! Go easy and go gradually. You don't deserve the punishment!

  • @fehquig Heh heh heh - oh yes I do!!! - roc

  • I commend you for being so diligent about going to the gym to work out.. Your body is making you start out slow and that is good!! Don't over do.. The red bird was fantastic! So pretty!

  • @mysteryglo Thanks, Judy! - roc

  • I think you did awesome. 10 min on that elliptical will soon be 20. Yes it will be hard work but you don't strike me as a person afraid of hard work or one to give up easily. I also strongly suspect that you've faced tougher things then an elliptical in your life.

Just remember that you didn't give it up willingly you took on a job that required much form you so that you could be a help to others. You are a good person to that and a # on a scale won't change that ever!

  • @Ultimatecruegirl The picture of your red bird is stunning I haven't seen better anywhere. I hope that you will frame it.

  • Patrick is right. You don't stop cold and pack it on for 3 years and then just go back an pick up where you left off. You'll give yourself a heart attack.

Where is Michael when you need him?

  • @anmoose You're right about the heart attack, Moosie! My doctor said I could have "stroked out"! On Friday, I managed 18 minutes on the elliptical machine. I was listening to Michael Jackson. That could have helped! - roc

  • May I ask how you destroyed your insides on the Atkin's diet? I have given the Atkin's my last try this year. My body just can't take it. I was so happy to hear about the things that no longer agree with you yesterday....I believe I have hit that stage in life also.

I am the same way....need to loose some weight before I see a trainer or hit the gym:)

    Go Roc!!

  • @livelearnfree The Atkins diet puts you into a state of "ketosis" which is, basically, starvation. It forces your body to "feed" off the fat, which sounds cool, but wrecks what the organs are supposed to do naturally. It contributed to irritable bowel syndrome for me. My body couldn't process the high levels of protein and fats. Ketosis also cause bad breath! For a short term, the Atkins diet is very effective. You can drop 10 pounds in two weeks. But, when you return to a normal diet,

  • @livelearnfree Part 1 ... guess what comes back in a hurry? Those ten pounds. Common sense and exercise are the best solutions. It is just that all of us want the magic weight loss pill AND the cheesecake!

I got over having to look good at the gym this past week. I am who I am and am making an effort to pound it off!!! If the "snobs" don't like it... well... too bad!

Thanks for your support!!! - roc

  • @livelearnfree oops - the comment below is PART 2!!! ... That makes this one Part 3!

  • I don't read everyone else's comments, so please forgive me if I'm repeating what someone else already said. The red bird is a male cardinal, which I'm sure you know; but I'm compelled to flaunt my intelligence at every opportunity ;-)

  • @DebUSA heh heh - yes, you are right. A male cardinal. Did you know that my home (London Ontario) is Canada's cardinal capital? We have a small flock - at least 5 males and 2 females that I have seen all at the same time. I love it! - roc

  • Yes, diet is so important, what we eat is what we are, you are doing very good eating what you eat, there is a cabbage soup diet, you make a big pot of canned tomatoes and mixed vegetables and have a big bowl of that with your lunch and supper, supposed to be good for you, my mother did that but i find if i just make a good pot of good soup and have a big bowl with my lunch i am doing good, exercised is good, bt in moderation if u hv a high blood pressure, take ca re and hv a good nite! :)

  • @veolettina I'm trying to eat somewhat smaller portions and better, healthier food. I hope there will be results! Even if the only change is that I am stronger with more endurance and energy, I will be happy. Thanks for the great comment. - roc

  • Yea weight lifting either machines or free weights only should be every other day. Basically you are tearing your muscles down to build them up (I know I know) but they need a day to heal and build the muscle back up. I am trying to get back into weight lifting but I do it myself at home not a gym girl. Weight lifting is so great for us girls. Just remember not to go low on the calories or puts the body in starvation mode. You go girl!

  • @cozzyk You sound as though you have been through it and know about exercise and diet. I do the machines every other day, three days a week and cardio on the other days. We'll see how it works out! No changes yet! - roc

  • @popparoc46 Yes my hubs and I both followed The Body For Life Plan about 10 years ago for a number of years. We kind fell off it when we moved to Florida because our weights went into storage for over a year. I ll see if I can send you a picture of what I did in three months (course that was age 40 not 50). Just do search on line for The Body For Life plan. The eating is healthy and work outs only total I think about 4.5 hours a week but are intense.

  • @cozzyk I am off to search Body for Life right now. I found the free Calorie Counter site, as well. Thanks Kim!

  • @popparoc46 BodyforLife sounds similar to how you are eating frequent and monitored portions.

  • I think you did well to get 4 minutes in at the gym. I think just taking walks is a good way to start, but you are working the machines at the gym! I'm concerned it may even be too much, but I realize you're working toward a deadline.

    EdElisea 01/04/12

  • @EdElisea Every other day for the weight machines, Ed, and cardio every day. My muscles are complaining a little, but it isn't as bad today as it was yesterday. Plus, I am going to see my doctor next week. I need a blood pressure pill. That will help! - roc

  • : )

  • @islandGAL7 There you are. - roc

  • pretty soon you will be back to the level of three years ago. i have a great rec centre with all sorts of machines but with no one to help show how they work. i guess that's what you get for such a low price. goodlife is so expensive.

  • @bohogirl1 Oh, Bonnie! I will have to tell my Goodlife membership story! I may have already told it, but what the heck! I am extremely fortunate! I joined in 1983 and three months later, they changed their membership format. I was angry at the time because they wanted $500 additional dollars. But, in turn, they offered locked in, lifetime memberships only to those in that particular position in 1983. My lifetime membership fee is $12.00 a month. If I go every day, that's about $0.40 a day.

  • @popparoc46 Part 2 - The only down side is that if I don't go, I still pay. The $144 a year is well worth being able to go to any club, in any city and not have to pay even the premium price they charge regular members at the newly built clubs! I really chortle every time I go in! I'll talk about it tomorrow because there was a little incident that I forgot to tell today! - roc

  • (2) so incredibly hard. Doing 4 min on the elliptical is 4 min more than you were doing prior to today, right? So hurray for you! :))

1400 calories is sort of scary. It CAN was done, however. Just be careful.

oh Roc... the red bird. <3 it :)

  • Roc, I will leave you only with this: Practice self compassion. If a friend bombed a job interview, you'd lend a shoulder and an encouraging word, yet if you screw up, you would likely rehash every little thing you did wrong. Holding yourself to a high standard is a good goal, but achieving perfection all the time is impossible. Show yourself teh same care you would a friend and go easier on yourself. I read that in a magazine this morning and is a very good reminder to stop riding ourselves

  • @silverscreamgrl oh dear. You made me a little weepy. I must be EXHAUSTED from abusing my body! I hate the rehash thing. It is psychologically damaging. You are absolutely correct, Beth. It is what I do and it can be exhausting. While I was slogging on the elliptical this morning, I was cursing myself over how I let this stupid thing happen. I felt so good three years ago... stress and food are a huge weakness!

So yes! I did the elliptical today! and 20 sit ups. And all the machines. And,

  • @popparoc46 Part 2 - And I will try to do it all over again tomorrow. Plus I have a story of an "incident" that happened with the gym assistant manager today. I'll have to tell it because it made me chortle inside! 'Course, I didn't show it to him!

    heh heh. - roc

  • @popparoc46 Oh, and there was a reason you got off track. It was that stupid thing you called a job and I called the horrible thing that kept you from us for ALMOST TWO YEARS!!!! That didn't allow you any sleep, it seemed, much less time to work out.

  • @silverscreamgrl Ha ha ha ha - Now I feel so much better! There were REAL reasons I got off track! Yeah. Stress eating. Travelling alone. Living away from home. Having to feed myself. Bags of Lays were so easy.

You will think I am kidding when I say you really made me feel better. It is all in the perspective.

  • have you thought about using a rebounder for off gym days? they are relatively cheap, good for the old bones, and does something to increase lymphatic drainage. i used to put a dvd made for the rebounder and jump away. now i have a huge trampoline in the yard that i use almost daily. the thing is to find fun things so you do not know that you are exercising.

  • @ddAdmire No, I haven't considered a rebounder, but I will. You should know that generally, I can't walk and chew gum - one wouldn't say I am graceful. So, do you think I would fall off? I've been thinking of the days off the machines. I need a routine - you know - the exercise ball, sit ups, push ups, light weights, elastic rubber tubing - I have all that stuff at home and a exercise cycle. Fun? Not sure I there yet, Don! - roc

  • @popparoc46 the one good thing about the rebounder is ....... handle bars lol. i wish we could just get fit by watching tv, reading and lounging by the pool.

  • @ddAdmire Exactly!

  • Sounds punishing, but you did awfully well last time with all the weight you lost and with the clavicles!

  • @twish1999 heh heh - I am searching for those clavicles, Twish! - roc

  • Well... if you could do 10 minutes on the eliptical, I guess I will exercise for 10 minutes today, too. Gotta start someplace.

Love the picture of the cardinal! Could you send me a copy?

  • @NewBoi1980 Sure, I could send a copy... do you want hard copy (I was going to go to Costco tomorrow and have a few prints made. I'll make one for you, unless you just want e-mail.

There are little things you could do Mike... lift a pound bag of something or find a step you can climb - just one step - one up, one down and switch. Ten minutes twice a day. It will help. - roc

  • @popparoc46 Yes, a hard copy would be wonderful. My mom has lost the words for many of her backyard friends (squirrels are "the ones that jump," and chipmunks are "the striped ones"), but she can still name her beloved red birds. She would adore that photo. Thanks, Roc!

  • Some of those machines do take a lot of courage to climb on and attempt.

    I've never tried an elyptical.

Cut yourself some slack.. it takes time to build back up. I have the cook yourself oatmeal every morning.. With a sprinkle of cinnamon and fat free milk.

Water is good! The colder the better!

    Yeah, Atkins scares me.

  • @SugarInHisBlood The elliptical is easier on my knees, and it works your butt. I won't like it for a month, though, I am sure! My muscles were screaming this morning, but a good scream! It's not as bad right now. Yup. Lots of water! Atkins is NOT for me! It worries me for those on the low (or no) carb diet. Scary stuff.

Maybe I will try the cinnamon tomorrow morning. Oatmeal fills me up!

    - roc

  • I also think it is not fair that we have no red birds like that here. The photo was gorgeous, you should get Christmas cards like Daniel's made for next year with it.

  • @yoyomax12 Did you know that London is the cardinal capital of Canada? We have a small flock - 5 males and 2 females. That is a good idea, Tammy... for having cards made! Pat took the picture yesterday.

    - roc

  • You just need to remember your admirer from the airport when you feel that you cant go out in public, he thought you were HAWT like I do!

I feel awful guilty for the gluttoness meal I had last night but not enough to torture myself with the gym again. Maybe I will get some inspiration soon...

    HUGS

  • @1DRock37167 Ha ha ha ha! Yes, he did, didn't he!! Thank goodness there are those who like Rubenesque women!

    Yes, the gym is torture!

    - roc

  • ....I made it sound like I had a maid, lol!

  • @yoyomax12 heh heh heh

  • You know that one of the things that scares me the most about those gyms is the fact that I have no idea how to use any of those machines and I would stand there starring at the control panels. I completely understand the weight loss before going to the gym, kind of like cleaning the house prior to the maid coming in to clean.

I agree that you should stay away from Atkins, but eating low glycemic index foods is a good thing to do. Carbs make you fatter than fat does. :)

  • @yoyomax12 Well, at Goodlife, when you join, they don't let you work out without a trainer showing you how to set the machines and making recommendations on the weight levels. They make sure you understand the "form" to use and the theory of what the machine targets. They write it all down and give you a chart to work from. Then, you're on your own. I agree - I would feel the same way about a maid!! - roc

  • Yah I need to go to the gym.I got to work on getting rid of some this booty.:)

  • @noahsark1962 heh heh. It would be so nice if it was easier to get rid of it than it actually is. - roc

  • Let's face it roc....we're not as young as we used to be and not as old as we're gonna be. I'll be honest with you and anyone who reads this, I haven't joined a health club for this very same reason... I don't want others looking at my flabby, almost 62 year old body! You are an inspiration to me. I am so unfit and outta shape. I have osteoporosis/arthritis too. But, even that is no excuse. Bravo roc ! hugs, Chris

  • @bugsinrug I get it, Chris! I've got a wrecked knee, high blood pressure, and the dreaded osteoarthritis. And a fu%#&* bunion. Drag out the dreaded red exercise ball and give it a kick.

Thanks for the encouragement! - roc
