My favorite Carpenter song. From the movie Lovers and Other Strangers. I never saw it but I heard that the movie was co-written by the woman who plays the mother of Fran Drescher on THE NANNY (a very funny show).
some people may call the carpenter's "cheesy" or "corny" but they are so pure and beautiful voices. I was in my high school choir and our teacher tried to teach us the beauty of HER voice. I was lucky enough to see the Carpenter's in concert. Ohhh, crap....I must be old...lol
I hear you. From what I heard back in the day, she truly had perfect pitch. While The Carpenters weren't my favorite act back then, I was in choir as well..LOL..and our director said her vocalizations were great examples of how we needed to handle our vowels when singing! It's been a LONG time and I've not forgotten that lesson nor Karen Carpenter's voice.
This song was composed by by Fred Karlin, Robb Wilson & Arthur James for the movie "Lovers and Other Strangers" which came out in 1970. Richard & Karen happened to see it while on tour, and recorded their version upon their return home.
This is a beautiful song about love but it is also about hope because something so lovely and uplifting exists in the world, like most of Karen's song they reach somewhere inside us where we just know we have found love and contentment.
Thank you Karen for the beauty and the hope you have given to the world.
this is a song that only you can listen to it w your soul open wide! and you need to close your eyes to see the beauty of love.. i wish i could find love as beautiful as this song...I wish life had the melody of this song...
@gzzrs3 Maybe not...there was something very different about her voice. Streisand for instance is so great in that she has so much power, range clarity etc...but there's the individual timbre that one has. Karen Carpenter's voice is so vividly stamped on that time, the early 70's that when you hear her, she brings you back there like no one else can. Those big eyes seem to hold some sort of sadness...you want to stomp on it and make it go away. You want her to be alive and happy. Very sad.
Love you, Karen. Love your voice, love yor songs but I always curl up and miss you so much and mourn the loss of your grace and beauty. We are all so lost without you.
I get a lump in my throat whenever I hear Karen singing. But we shouldn't forget how much of her success she owed to Richard's fine arrangements, many of which were done at a time that he was suffering from his own personal demons and from being in her shadow.
And a drummer too... I'm a big SLAYER fan amoungst other hard core metal bands.... But no one is as awesome as Karen Carpenter. Her voice is haunting. I'm posting a version of this song "just because" on my facebook.
I hear her voice and my throat closes and my eyes get misty and my heart grows bigger. My life is better because Karen and Richard Carpenter have been part of it.
I have so many memories listening to the Carpenters. Karen Carpenter was always my father's favorite singers. As far back as I remember we had The Carpenters playing. As I got older and developed an appreciation for music, I began to hear what my father heard in this band. Karen's voice is flawless. The music was well written and painted a picture. At different times in my life the songs painted different paintings in my mind. That is the mark of GREAT musicians.
@brian6078 because it would be nice for variety. They are called The Carpenters. Not just Karen Carpenter. Also, I prefer Patsy Cline's voice. She had more range.
@VASINGER You have a point at least have Richard doing more back-up vocals, and perhaps a couple of songs singing lead vocals.Patsy Cline I agree had a incredible voice.I was not born yet when she died;but I could imagine the shock of losing all them great musicians.I heard Waylon Jennings flipped a coin with Ritchie Valens for the seat on that plane and lost,so he took the bus.
@brian6078 he did sing a song called "Saturday". I got a copy of the Carpenters LP just the other day. But Karen was a great singer too. I like lower female voices better than high ones. They are more pleasing to the ear.
@Coowallsky -Thanks you are right,You know I was told she died in the crash with the Big Bopper,Ritchie Valens, and Buddy Holly.I'm glad you corrected my about that;I've Believed that for 20 yrs now!!I know when I first heard that I wondered why she was with them when she was a country star?I will remove that false comment. Thanks Coowallsy
@brian6078 well i just think it would have been nice if they had sung a duet or something. Its nice to have variety, ya know. They are called The Carpenters. Not just Karen Carpenter Band.
Great song (written by great song writers - RIP Jimmy Griffin) - I can't help seeing the funny side, listening to "Look at the two of us" while looking at the worst haircuts in living memory!
@nakedBison69 - presumably you took offense at my comment. I won't hold it against you, some people just don't have a sense of humour. As for me, I do have a sense of humour. Well, you have to with a haircut like mine ;)
Her voice was the only one that I could enjoy and still go to sleep to when I was a kid. That smooth flowing style from note to note, word to word, dipping flawllessly down, down, to that deep tone.
Karen could easily reach the deepest layers of our souls. She was only 17 years, when she sang "California dreamin". The very first notes...incredible.
You're right. After all these years, I never realized the verses are identical even singing to it in the shower for decadesl...too mesmerized listening to her voice. This version, in particular, her voice is very up-front and full, just the way I like it.
My teen years (from the 60's) consisted of Zeppelin, Beatles, British Invasion, Hendrix, Motown, etc. I graduated in '71. I agree with all posts... there will never be another one like Karen Carpenter. What a beautiful voice. RIP.
The smoothness with which she would glide from note to note was just oh so delicious to listen to, and instantly identifiable. There'll never be anyone else like her, RIP Karen we miss ya
The thing with her voice is that you could turn on the radio and you would instantly know that it was Karen. I don't know any other singer with such a distinct, original and clear voice...
This beautiful song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March 1971 and was a #1 Adult Contemporary record. The best song of the Carpenters' career, in my opinion.
Rolandwangyan, great job on this video, a wonderful tribute to this beautiful lady with the mellifluous voice. Her untimely loss was such a tragedy.
Happy Birthday Karen.
