I am impressed by how quickly the blades adjusted to stop the acceleration. Just goes to show you how efficiently they can adjust to differing wind speeds to keep a constant hub rpm.
@cheetawolf , there is a brake, but it is a maintenance safety device - only strong enough to stop the thing rotating when the blades are feathered. A brake strong enough to stop one of these in a strong wind would be enormous ( and heavy, expensive, etc) and applying it would probably twist the entire turbine off the top of the tower
not just pretty big, the gearbox is responsible of most wind turbine failures, it´s expensive, weighs a lot and are responsible of a great energy loss due to it´s internal friction.
because of that i think that the technology of many poles is the future of this industry
@lcabosa enercon turbines are direct drive, meaning the generator turns at the same speed as the rotor and there is no gear box. most gear boxes are pretty damn big
