In my opinion the reason is because is less dangerous for ship structure. Taking the sea from the front to back means place the front on one wave and put the back on another wave and it can be dangerous. And more he don't take all sea on the side but partially from the side. Sorry for my english :-) Quote my post and let me know what you think. Is possible that I'm wrong.

During 2003 Decmber and 1/1/04 there was a hurricane like this.We were 210 miles north Aberdeen. The Sea were like this. They Smashed our Sem-sub Adriatic iv for 3 Days solid.We were not alolowed out on deck for 3 Days accept for the sly Picture or 20.
