I hate the way people who judge athletes when they retire. Who knows what is in the mind when they make that decision. Thorpie I believe is one of the greatest swimmers of all time, his reasons for his hanging up his goggles is HIS and NO ONE should casts doubts to why. Personally I would have loved to seen Phelps and Thorpe go head to head on all 8 events that Phelps won. Would be a great thing for swimming

I think it's stupid for Thorpe to quit. When you truly love your sport you don't walk away from it. I guess he just feels pressured to have to beat Phelps so quiting is easier. Now it's time for Phelps to thrive ,torpedo is a thing of the past.

Mark Spitz didn't lose anything. It's not as if they were competing for something. Spitz broke 7 world records and won 7 gold medals wearing a floppy suit with long hair, and no goggles. What Phelps did is incredible, and I think he's an incredible athlete; but, it's like comparing Ali to Mayweather or something. They're just different athletes in different times who both did great things.

@mikegoldstein318 Well its not the same as comparing boxers because Ali would be able to beat a lot of new boxers if he was young and fresh Michael is way faster then spitz ever was spitz was not what we would call a swimmer today he was just far stronger then everyone else his times were not that fast at all everyone says that he won 7 gold medals with no body suit or goggles or a shave but the bottom line is phelps is way faster. Spitz was still a great athlete

Mark Spitz is a gracious hero. He is not coming off as anything but respectful. I think both Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz are heroes. Mark Spitz has led a good clean life and I really really hope the same for Phelps. He has already donated 1 million to help swimming and he is in a position to do more more swimming than anyone ever. I am sure Mark Spitz would help any way he could if Phelps needs it. Two gracious Americans make me proud of the US Swimmers. All of them are gracious!!!!!!!!

he was just being realistic, there was very strong competition against Michael and winning 8 gold medals it's not something you do everyday.

I absolutely love Michael and look up to him !

But Mark Spitz is and will always be a legend and deserves some respect.

His record of 7 gold medals took 39 years to go down,

I've viewed this video more than once and it doesn't seem to me that Spitz comes off as being  jealous. He is just making a statement that it won't be easy. He's saying that from experience. He had held the record of seven gold medals for 36 years and if it were easy it would have been broken already. You all should see Spitz' other interviews on the subject. After Phelps beat the record, Spitz said on live TV, "It's about time someone broke my record." That doesn't sound like jealousy to me.
