wow how far the mighty have fallen. Having tried the game I have to say this was utterly disappointing especially for an age of empires title, miniscule amount of civilizations to choose from, unsatisfying battles and lack of depth of strategy ruined the whole experience. It just didn't FEEL like age of empires , the tone and atmosphere just wasn't AOE. I hope this is just side project to a fully fledged AOE title otherwise fans stick to the originals which are still amazing regardless of age.

It has fewer races but more diverse, no one whined about AoM's fewer races, or Age of Kings where everyone shared 90% of the same units and buildings. I'd like examples, between the tech trees, diverse equipment and advisors, crafting trees and consumables, how is their LESS depth ?

No one complained because those races were diverse and completely differently from one another economy, unit production, defense and offense was balanced and varied. Yes your right AOK did share 90% of units and buildings but if people bothered to go in depth all of the civs had distinct units and tech based on what type and category the civs were based on. I really don't give a damn about crafting and all this MMO shit it doesn't belong in an AOE game.

@tilotick The meta game is one of the well-done parts about the game though. If you played AOE for the campaign, theirs plenty of missions for you, some are VERY challenging. If you just did skirmishes, that will come soon, you already have arenas. They took much of the diversity from AoM and put it in AoEo, playing the Egyptians is almost the same, which is why i cant wait for the Celts, since Norse was my AoM race. Turn off the chat bar and you'll forget its an MMO !

@MetalCroyax I do miss the flying ragdolls from cannon shots of age of empires 3. The graphics help with the gameplay, i love the way units evolve in their look with better gear, and the meta game is fun too, crafting and city building. The game is a little different and the missions are varied, some are really hard too.

@MrSierra125 ARGH, graphics do not imply its dumbed down, the gameplay is more complex than AoE3 was because it borrowed its rpg aspects and real time 'shipping' element as in-game consumables., its designed to be more competitive. When you begin to get to Victorian era, the game play is going to change substantially. You'd probably not mine stone anymore, maybe not even gold. I'm glad they are keeping the game in this time period !

Ditto AoE3, it had a different 'feel', game play wise, they are the SAME. Can you define this 'feeling' ? @RapperWar Me either, because i only used maybe 3 types of units as the Norse anyways (not counting myth units for obvious reasons). But the new graphics make it easier, especially when units are well equipped, their features standout. If age of mythology looked 'cartoony' would you of hated it, or would it not of changed the game at all ? The game has flaws like its Windows Live bit and slow development, but playing it is just like any other in the series, plus co-op

@g0tcadaver Because putting gear on units adds graphic upgrades to their armor and weapons. This cartoonish looks makes it easier to distinguish one unit from another, even with varying degrees of coverage. Its quite good actually.

Take Team Fortress 2 for an example, you can immediately know what some classes does and don't do, making it easier for the player to come up with ways to take down his foe.

@frankytap play it through Windows LIVE so you have to be online even if you're playing for free..you can rank up your free town center to level 5 or six I believe and be able to enter the Spartan Arena (by traveling to Sparta), but you can only PvP unranked. Either way you can have fun playing either the free quests or free unranked multiplayer
