  • does anyone know why they gave it 6 wheels instead of 4? whats the advantage of having 2 more front wheels?

  • @jasonsitu maybe more traction for turning

  • @jasonsitu The 4 front wheels were smaller, creating less drag caused by the large wheels that stick up over the front wing. It improved front aerodynamics.

  • I never thought that the 6 wheel Tyrell that Depailler is driving here was a great car, but it is amazing to see Patrick powersliding in it. Nice upload.

  • apparently is was a 'piece of junk' to drive!

  • @Edd614 Thats what Jody Scheckter said. I didn't hear Patrick Depailler or Ronnie Peterson complain about. I always hated Jody Scheckter.

  • Damn! Look at the steering wheel at the beginning. That was some hard work back then. I really like the old Formula 1 cars and I hold those drivers in high regard, but it was way too dangerous. Sadly...

  • @Schrecklassnach38 they were basically go karts with huge engines. so much driver control and concentration needed to drive them.

  • @bill9e ur such a wanker not to know that it's real

  • I'd love to see modern 6 wheel cars.

  • Not real???? WTF?? Go play some more video games brainiac !!

  • mmm that Monaco scenes don't look quite real...seems like a very tricky car in the corner

  • It's funny how that it the only f1 car in the world with six wheels but you can still see the driver struggling for grip

  • @cheese320 did you happen to see the front wing? no? me neither.

its extremely small and does not look too effective- - -even though he has 4 wheels in the front, it doesnt seem he has a lot of downforce on the front

  • @imakedookie ,there is a front wing but its not a normal one its a hlf sylom

  • @cheese320 did you happen to see the front wing? no? me neither.

its extremely small and does not look too effective- - -even though he has 4 wheels in the front, it doesnt seem he has a lot of downforce

  • UMMMMM........WHY ?

  • @hostilityy to reduce drag, hence smaller wheels but 6 of them to have the same amount of rubber connecting the ground

  • @hostilityy The difference is that this people begin asking "Why not" and not "why". There is people that doesn't try to win, but try to. They're genius, they're artists, they're pioneer. The English culture was more open minded then the others before these ten years. I cannot say the same now because it's a very strange historical period. Economist and politicians used to say that it was for the geographic position and because they reached more before other countries. You can see it in music.

  • @polloalforno Very insightful and I agree. Yes, we are in a very strange historical period. Government(s) are trying very hard to tamp down the individual and wildly grow their own control.

    Sad. Very sad.

  • MASTERPIECE!

    BEST F1 CAR EVER!

  • i always thought Tyrell was pronounced like Tayrell

  • They have a HotWheels in this model.

  • Did they have some kind of gantry on the P34 for the Monaco shots?

  • The reason why it didn't win more races is because the special tires weren't as tested as other (normal sized) tires.

  • @SICKJ0KER Thanks sickjoker, I researched but couldn't find any info.

  • They were banned. they were too good. like everything else that was banned.

  • Can someone tell me if 6 wheelers were banned, or was it just not as good an idea as they thought it would be and faded out?

  • @biglarfspeed6 Goodyear stopped making the smaller tyres for the front wheels.

  • it was great until you got in the pit and you had to change 6 tires

  • Braking distances look longer than a normal car but they're fast!

  • was this legal

  • SEGA!

  • looks like its a dog to handle but then again patrick was never one of the best F1 drivers

  • @liptap R U Nuts? Most pundits rate him right up there with Villenueve when it comes unto car control. Read, man!

  • It is my understanding they were going to experiment with the front brakes. Don't know if they actual did it. The idea was to vary which set of front wheels did most of the front braking depending upon the type of corner. By doing so it would create an effect as if it were altering the wheelbase length, and thus the cornering ability of the car, depending upon the type of corner.

  • I think the only advantage of the 6 wheels are the 6 tires which equal more traction.

  • Look at how he has to battle that beast.

Almost giving it opposite lock on a flat bend. superb.

Any games with a tyrell mod does anyone know?

  • @gnark1ll1us i no

  • @gnark1ll1us there is a 1976 carset for F1 Challenge which features this car, i sent you a pm for the link.

  • This series needed a special tyre to be manufactured, (Goodyear) and it wasn't financially viable. An amazingly successful idea though... The smaller front wheel also offered a lower profile as well as more surface area in contact.

  • how did they come to the idea to build a six wheels f1 car?

  • @Lyricoholic their was no rule against it and no one had ever done it

  • @113stDFX9900

but is it better in corners ?

  • @Lyricoholic it has no understeering and twice the normal grip on the front

  • @stubbi

They were about half the size though.

  • @skinnyg190 even if. the bearing area was twice the one as normal.

  • @Lyricoholic more surface area on the front tyre they thought would bring more grip. It was a creative way of coming up with more surface area though lol.

  • 1:10 WOOOOOW

  • The car looks like a Hot Wheels.

  • What year did they race this? In the mid-70's??

  • The P34's were done racing before the 1980's (1978 was the last year). This particular footage is from 1977. I think one has been restored and is participating in classic car races.

  • yes

in the F1 classic or something like that

  • @rcgrabbag

Correct, I believe there are actually 2 or more restored and racing today in classic races ... one was restored by RM Motorsports, I personally shot this video footage of it at their shop in Wixom MI ... see my videos on youtube

  • @rcgrabbag yes, it is. I saw here in Youtube some footage of the P34 competing in Monaco Historic race

  • @rcgrabbag Yeah I saw it live at a historic racing meet in laguna seca CA a few years back.

  • @rcgrabbag The tyrrell p34 raced in the majority of the 1976 season and all of the 1977 season (The Tyrrell 007 did the first few races in 1976). This particular footage is the 1977 south african grand prix. One has been restored for racing in the FIA Thouroughbred grand prix.

  • 1976-1977 then it got banned....

  • @elgh33 it wasn't banned, GoodYear stopped making the front tires for it. The fronts were used on nothing else and GoodYear couldn't justify making tires for one application.

  • umm no. patrick depailler (driver in video) finished driving for tyrell @ end of 1978 season

  • Depailler drove the P34 in 76 and 77, remained at Tyrrell for 78, and then Ligier in 79.

  • 76 I think

  • el coche mas increible en la historia da la f 1

  • 0:55

holy shit how did they get that kind of a camera view?

  • big pole and camera :P

  • Its a run with the car when no-else was there and was closed off. The camera is supported with scafolding holding a camera above it, with Sir Jackie Stewart driving.

  • If you look out for a Monaco Onboard video of Tyrell, youll see how big was the camera, it destroys all the aerodinamic. When you see that big camera is like: omg roflmao!

  • haha i found the video, search for Tyrell P34, on the 1 :01 of the video youll laugh!

  • Pour moi la plus incroyable F1 de l'histoire!!!

Si on pouvais revenir a des règlement moins stricte de nos jours, peut-être qu'on aurais droit au retour d'engin démoniaque comme cette Tyrrell.

  • ronnie peterson told once that this cat was totally undriveble

  • Does anyone has infos on how the bending radius of the 4 front wheels were set up? Thanks in advance.

  • having 6 tyres to change must of been a disadvantage in the pit stops sureley

  • Back then they carried enough fuel to last the whole race and quite often didn't change the tyres at all! So it wasn't as much of a disadvantage as it would be today.

  • looked like he was fighting the car the whole way!

  • Not really. At Kyalami he is drifting very nice into Crowthorne Corner and at Monaco Patrick Depailler drives the P6 in cart style. Risky, but impressive. Well, it's Patrick Depailler ;)

  • What is the advantage of six wheels on a Formula one car?

  • Because of the smaller tyres there was a better air penetration expected, resulting in less air resistence of the car.

  • Less air resistance, more grip, more brake power...

The problem was te cooling of the brakes...

The 4 wheels in front where too small..

  • love the p34. such a great idea, if only soemone like mclaren or ferrari used it, it would be devastatingly fast

  • Look up on youtube "fast lane daily". there is a recent show where they say some itallian or whatever is trying to put a six wheeled supercar into production

  • yes it is called the Covini C6W

  • Not real? All you have to do is look up some F1 history and you'll see its all quite real.

  • @VonVoltage Everyone laughed at Ken Tyrrell until the car started winning races. Then Williams and even Ferrari were experimenting with 6-wheelers. They dropped the concept because the tire costs were usually too steep.

  • @starlionblue are you an idiot? that car didnt win races. it only won 1 race in it's career.

  • @starlionblue Winning races? It won ONE race accordingly to Wikipedia. Gosh it's such an ugly F1 car, must be the most ugly of all time.

  • @VuDu4000 I don't find

  • The front straight shown here (kyalami) is where the Tom Pryce accident happened, and it was in the same year too!

That sort of overshadowed the video for me!

  • Il;ove the way the driver even as early this were so exposed to everything. now F1 cars all you can see is the top of the stearing wheel and the driver helmet

  • Though that remains true I'll point out the above shot you see from Monaco was setup with bodywork off the car exposing him like that.

  • four-wheel opposite lock! love it

  • Nice vid! Love it how he gives his crew at the pitwall 'the thumb'!

  • 6 wheeled F1 car lol thats cool :)

  • MOST RADICAL F1 CAR

  • I don't know the fan car made in the 70s was quite radical, i can't remember who made it though.

  • chaparral

  • Brabham.

  • If you refer to the open wheeled Brabham BT 46B not the earlier Chaparral, you will find it under my Motorsport playlist.

  • Nice vid.

  • wich year?

  • March 5th, 1977

  • The greatest ever car!! Thanks for posting

  • brilliant car!! proud of da name to :)

  • wow wat is the max speed of this car??

  • damn nice onboard with the unique Patrick Depailler! Thanks for posting this!

  • thats the year tom pryce die after hiting a marshal who cross the street

  • real racing those days

  • alot of opposite lock going through those first two corners.

  • Tyres still a little cold I think, underinflated, plus Patrick always put on the good how for the camera :)

  • Wow

  • This car was amazing!

patrick depailler... may he rest in peace :(
