@jasonsitu The 4 front wheels were smaller, creating less drag caused by the large wheels that stick up over the front wing. It improved front aerodynamics.
I never thought that the 6 wheel Tyrell that Depailler is driving here was a great car, but it is amazing to see Patrick powersliding in it. Nice upload.
Damn! Look at the steering wheel at the beginning. That was some hard work back then. I really like the old Formula 1 cars and I hold those drivers in high regard, but it was way too dangerous. Sadly...
@cheese320 did you happen to see the front wing? no? me neither.
its extremely small and does not look too effective- - -even though he has 4 wheels in the front, it doesnt seem he has a lot of downforce on the front
@hostilityy The difference is that this people begin asking "Why not" and not "why". There is people that doesn't try to win, but try to. They're genius, they're artists, they're pioneer. The English culture was more open minded then the others before these ten years. I cannot say the same now because it's a very strange historical period. Economist and politicians used to say that it was for the geographic position and because they reached more before other countries. You can see it in music.
@polloalforno Very insightful and I agree. Yes, we are in a very strange historical period. Government(s) are trying very hard to tamp down the individual and wildly grow their own control.
It is my understanding they were going to experiment with the front brakes. Don't know if they actual did it. The idea was to vary which set of front wheels did most of the front braking depending upon the type of corner. By doing so it would create an effect as if it were altering the wheelbase length, and thus the cornering ability of the car, depending upon the type of corner.
This series needed a special tyre to be manufactured, (Goodyear) and it wasn't financially viable. An amazingly successful idea though... The smaller front wheel also offered a lower profile as well as more surface area in contact.
@Lyricoholic more surface area on the front tyre they thought would bring more grip. It was a creative way of coming up with more surface area though lol.
The P34's were done racing before the 1980's (1978 was the last year). This particular footage is from 1977. I think one has been restored and is participating in classic car races.
Correct, I believe there are actually 2 or more restored and racing today in classic races ... one was restored by RM Motorsports, I personally shot this video footage of it at their shop in Wixom MI ... see my videos on youtube
@rcgrabbag The tyrrell p34 raced in the majority of the 1976 season and all of the 1977 season (The Tyrrell 007 did the first few races in 1976). This particular footage is the 1977 south african grand prix. One has been restored for racing in the FIA Thouroughbred grand prix.
@elgh33 it wasn't banned, GoodYear stopped making the front tires for it. The fronts were used on nothing else and GoodYear couldn't justify making tires for one application.
Its a run with the car when no-else was there and was closed off. The camera is supported with scafolding holding a camera above it, with Sir Jackie Stewart driving.
If you look out for a Monaco Onboard video of Tyrell, youll see how big was the camera, it destroys all the aerodinamic. When you see that big camera is like: omg roflmao!
Back then they carried enough fuel to last the whole race and quite often didn't change the tyres at all! So it wasn't as much of a disadvantage as it would be today.
Not really. At Kyalami he is drifting very nice into Crowthorne Corner and at Monaco Patrick Depailler drives the P6 in cart style. Risky, but impressive. Well, it's Patrick Depailler ;)
Look up on youtube "fast lane daily". there is a recent show where they say some itallian or whatever is trying to put a six wheeled supercar into production
@VonVoltage Everyone laughed at Ken Tyrrell until the car started winning races. Then Williams and even Ferrari were experimenting with 6-wheelers. They dropped the concept because the tire costs were usually too steep.
Il;ove the way the driver even as early this were so exposed to everything. now F1 cars all you can see is the top of the stearing wheel and the driver helmet

@hostilityy to reduce drag, hence smaller wheels but 6 of them to have the same amount of rubber connecting the ground

What is the advantage of six wheels on a Formula one car?
slungbungdungclung 3 years ago 3
Because of the smaller tyres there was a better air penetration expected, resulting in less air resistence of the car.
FarFromZero 3 years ago 3
Less air resistance, more grip, more brake power...
The problem was te cooling of the brakes...
The 4 wheels in front where too small..
