  • Stupid ? But will it work with the canon 430 ex? I don't have the ll. and if so I'm assuming it needs to be in slave mode? I think I missed if you said to put the 430 in a slave mode or not? Thanks

  • im still having problems setting up, my canon 60D to my 430exii?? i did everything you, still not connecting with my camera?? thats strange ...

  • that external flash - is it has to be some kind of special lamp or any lamps can be fired with flashes from pop ups lamps?

  • i cant seem to stop my built in flash from fireing any ideas on what im doing wrong?

  • @hllb The built in flash firing is normal and there is nothing you can do to completely turn it off! It must fire in order to trigger the remote flashes. Using the second option of the flash menu allows the camera to fire the remotes but it shouldn't contribute to the actual exposure. Sometimes the tail end of built flash is seen when doing close up photography but the effects are minimal.

  • @markhyo :( ok then it is right then

  • Do you have a video that demonstrates how to set the camera/flash on camera? I have a 550EX Speedlite, and, will be doing a wedding shoot. I need to refine my techniques with the flash so I don't end up with shots blown out. I end up avoiding the flash but it should be a very helpful tool. Thanks!

  • @nlh835 I just put a new video up that may help you with this very thing!

  • It would have been helpful had you shown the RC6 on video - it would further had been preferable had you shown how to set up the camera to enable the RC6 to trigger the camera nd flash. That said was informative

  • thanks i was going nuts trying to figure this out

  • How far away from the camera can you place the ex slave flash and yet have it fire?

  • @catchingupintime I have used this setup indoors up to about 10-15 feet. I haven't tried it any further. I primarily use the Pocketwizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 for reliable triggering. I would only use this setup as a last resort.

  • @markhyo Thanks for the clear explaination on how to use the built in wireless trigger. I was giddy when I realized my 60D had this feature. A bit confused though. In your video you give the feature a pretty strong endorsement, however you commented here that it may not be very reliable, and that a PocketWizard setup is the way to go. I'd much rather not spend $400+ on the Mini and Flex setup. Possible to elaborate on any problems you've experienced with the built in 60d trigger? Thx!

  • @jidoe The built in trigger on the 60D works great in a small room environment and does fairly well when working outside at reasonable distances (20ft or less). The problem for me is line of sight. I work with a lot of modifiers like my 64" parabolic umbrella or 22" beauty dish that blocks the line of sight. When I work I want to be able to move freely without having to worry if I'm lined up correctly with the flash. Radio triggers give me that flexibility and greater distances to boot.

  • @jidoe Part 2. I mostly work on location and usually at distances greater than 20ft. I've successfully trigger my PW's up to 300ft! That's more than I'll probably ever need. Many wedding receptions I shoot in are easily 100ft long or more and the built system just wouldn't be able to handle those rooms. For starting out the built flash on the 60D is a great tool but eventually you will probably out grow it. Any other questions just ask!!

  • @markhyo Thanks very much for the info, it is very helpful! Cheers.

  • thank you!

  • Thanks heaps. Great video.

  • Thank you for this video. I have the same Camera and flash and couldn't figure this stuff out for the life of me. You saved the day!!

  • Great video mate

  • if i set flash to external only, and take a photo of myself/the camera in the mirror, i can see the built in flash lit up in the photo

  • @rodfell. You may still see the tale end of the pre-flash in the photo/mirror. It's so weakened that it won't contribute much of anything to the actually exposure. This is normal. I believe the timing could be much with the Canon wireless system but for now it's all we have to work with. I really don't use the wireless flash system very often since I use the Pocketwizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radio triggers. They're much more reliable for since you don't have to rely on line of sight shooting.

  • @markhyo it contributes a fairly significant amount if you want to take a close up photo of something (eg product photography) where you have the speedlite aimed away from the subject (eg bounce). you'll get a nasty lens shadow if you use a wide angle lens. I think i'll have a look at the triggers you mentioned

  • @markhyo do you use the ttl or manual with your pocketwizard? i'm thinking of getting a cheaper manual wireless flash

  • Thanks for the video. Enjoyed it

  • a little ironic that a black guy would say "it's about how you use it"

  • Even with setting just the remote/external flash my 60D built in flash is still firing as well, I just want the Speedlite to fire not the built in flash. What am I doing wrong ? I am using a 580 ex ii with my 60D Thanks

  • You just saved me lots of money! Thanks man :)

  • would have liked to see the pictures you shot. other than that very nice tutorial helped a lot.

  • your vioce soounds like shit

  • @markhyo

I have the Canon 60D, I want to mount the flash next to the camera. WIll the wireless be the same as an off camera cord?

  • Thanks for the tutorial, easier than sifting through the manuals to get the flash to perform. I'm using the Canon 270ex II speedlite with the 60D and it works brilliantly. Really useful to have the wireless capability without having to attach transmitters and receivers to everything. Great video.

  • How does one do this with a canon EOS 40D? I am wondering wether i should buy a used 40d, a used 60d or a new 60d... I'm on a little bit of a tight budget :).

going to use it for all kinds of photos but mainly skateboarding-photography.

  • Excellent and informative video!!! Thank you for sharing this with us.

  • Great video! I actually follow your work on flickr. Which was prior to knowing you even had a youtube channel. Keep up the good work!

  • awesome video! your tutorial is simple yet easy to understand.. keep up the good work!

  • Thank you so much, I have been looking for this option for a few weeks now.

  • I can't figure out how to fir my external flash without having my built-in flash fire as well. I set up everything in my camera (60D) just as you did. Is there something additional I need to do?

  • @getemhi The built in flash will fire EVERYTIME! It is the only way it will trigger the remote slave flash! You can set the built in flash to be disabled during the exposure but you WILL STILL SEE THE PRE-FLASH on the built flash to trigger the remote flash! Hope this helps you understand the system a little better.

  • @markhyo Perfect…. Thank you.

  • @markhyo So in other words, it fires no matter what, but in this case, it will fire but the light output will not be recorded, because the in-house flash will fire before the shutter opens just to trigger the external flash?

  • @merophosis Exactly!!

  • @markhyo @markhyo Excellent video. And you explained the reasons as to why the built in flash fires always too. I was going nuts trying to figure it out. Thank you very, very much...You're doing a great job!

  • @getemhi .. I'm having the same problem!!!!!! Can someone help?? Have you found how to fix the problem?? It's sooooo annoying!! I haven't changed anything!! But it was working properly and now it's not!!! WHAT HAVE I CHANGED!!!!!!!

  • @getemhi check out thisYoutube vid to show you how to setup the camera to make the built in not flash or ratio the slave and built in: Canon EOS 60D Tutorial - Integrated Speedlite Transmitter 13/14 by ChristopherKblog

  • here is the link youtube.com/watch?v=p-in23ZXErM&feature=related

  • Does this work with 2 580xii flashes? PLEASE ANSWER ME -thanks

  • @Pakifier Yes this does work with 2 580EXII flashes.

  • I want to do speed photography but do u need a special flash to do all of this wireless gaz? Will any flash with a slave do the trick for wireless?

  • @Smalskin. I don't know about any flashes but most of the Canon ETTL flashes from the 550EX and up will work using the built in flash controller. Third party flash may also work but I haven't tested nor have access with any of them. So in that regard proceed with caution using anything but Canon flashes.

  • Hey! A very informative video. THE best video for explaining the flash control. I have a question though. I own a Canon 430EX Speedlite and I am planning on buying the canon 660D. Will the 600D fire the 430EX wirelessly or not? I've read that it does not. Since it has the same wireless flash control system as the 60D I thought you could answer it. Appreciate any help. Cheers !

  • @BATISTAthebeast. The 600D will also fire the 430EX like the 60D so if you get that camera you should be good to go!

  • @markhyo Yup got it!! And very happy. The wireless flash is a boon and worth the extra bucks. Produces fantastic images. Anyway, thanks for the reply. Really appreciate it. :-)

  • Hello markhyo I have a question and thanks a lot for this video

however, i also use 430exII and i set it as you did. What happens is that my popup flash also fired, even with the setting for just to use wireless flash. I don't think it's pre-flash but just a subtle flash.

It's very troublesome in macro photography, since i can see the shadow from my lens, which caused from the popup. any suggestion? thanks

    thanks!

  • Nice and easy to follow. Thank you.

  • I had absolutely no idea my 60d could do this.

    I am a noob. wow.

    Thank you so much!

    -Mark

(You're name is awesome btw(No homo))

  • Will it trigger a 430/580 exII placed directly behind a subject? Don't know if this has been asked already. Thanks for the vid.

  • I understand that the built in flash has to pre flash, but when I have set up as instructed and shot, a picture, the preflash is included in the exposure. Is there another setting to turn it off.

    Regards

    Batso

  • @Kevin56957

A little condescending no? Obviously, you don't shoot enough if your "stock battery" can "goose" for days; whatever that means.

  • Hi I like your video that you made but, I am in between buying the 7D or 60D. I think in this video you said that the "Built-in flash func. setting, Wireless Flash" you said: you used the Second Option, if you wanted to use your wireless only why did your incamera flash go off in your video? I watched the 7D wireless video and they said they had the same problem, that they can't turn off the incamera flash. So my question to you is, can you turn off the in Camera Flash? Thanks Again

  • @hanalei412002

Let me explain this a little bit better so it might be easier to understand. The built in flash will fire a pre-flash every time when using it to wirelessly control remote flashes. It has to do this in order to trigger the other flashes! This is what you're seeing in my video. You can set the built in flash to not be present during the actual exposure which is what I did in my setup. There is no way to turn the pre-flash function off. This is true on the 7D and 60D.

  • thanks alot, the video really helps.

  • hey Mark, great video ! thanks for sharing.

  • Just wondering when we might see a new video from you? Thanks for all of your efforts in making them, especially ones dealing with the 60D! Keep up the great work!

  • Hi Mark,

I have the 60d and the 580exII, I set my camera as you showed in your video. I set my flash on Master and channel 1. I cannot get my flash to fire like you showed on the video. I would like only the external flash to fire like you had shown. What settings did you set on the flash to fire?

    Dan

  • @TheBPRCrew. Your 580EXII needs to be set to Slave and Channel 1 in order to be fired as a remote. If you set your camera up according to how I did it in the video the built in flash will still fire to trigger the remote 580EXII but it will not show in the exposure. MarkW

  • Hi Mark,

  • lol you look like samwell :D (/watch?v=fbGkxcY7YFU)

  • Hi Mark,

Nice video. Glad you made it esp. for 60D users as I have one too. Thinking abt. buying the 580ex2. My Q is do I still have to pop up the built in flash if I set the 580ex2 to master flash? Also, can you also make a video if you use more than 1 speedlite? Sorry for the Qs as I'm new in wireless flash thing.

  • @imarahim. If you have multiple 580EXII's you can use one on the camera hotshoe in master mode to trigger another 580EXII in slave mode. In this case you would not use the built in system at all. If you only have one flash you must use the 60D popup flash to control the remote flash. I'll try to get another video with multiple flashes soon.

  • I too, have just purchased the 60D and a 430ex II flash.. I was trying to figure out y i couln't get it to flash wirelessly. what am i doing wrong, and what would i need for it to flash on wireless mode/not on hot shoe?

  • really love your camera, thanks for the video..

  • great stuff

  • Thanks for the video - been considering a 60D & was curious about the wireless flash...

  • hi can you help me please? im new in this and i want to buy a flash but does this flash works with the 60D? Bower SFD728C TTLl thanks for your time best wishes from mexico

  • @midikdj This flash will work in ttl mode on the 60D's hotshoe but it will not work as a wireless flash. It lack a slave mode and that is needed in order to use the built in flash to fire the remotes. You may want to check some of the sigma flashes with slave modes. They are slightly cheaper than the canon equivalents but I've heard they fire with the wireless flash controller on the 60D.

  • nice video - thx

  • What Umbrella adapter you are using , i have elinchrom D-lite IT 2go set , and i want to put 580ex2 flash on elinchrom light stand. Any recommendation for good and secure Umbrella Adapter

  • @waqasnasir I'm just using a standard umbrella adapter which you can find a BH photo. I'm using the ones made by impact and they new ones run about $24.95.

  • does the built in flash fired to be able to control the off cam flash gun? thanks for the set up tutorial man.

  • @rambotnik Yes! The off camera flash much be an Ettl compatible flash that operates with a slave mode.

  • Can you tell me what model of Flash did you use and what is the name of the remote controller. links will be awesome. thanks

  • @alfredojra I was using a Canon 430EXII. The remote controller that I was using is the RC-6. Thanks!

  • thanks nice setup and tutorial...

  • thanks for your sharing, i m headache how to setup the wireless flash just now... just knew that it hide under the build in flash setting, lol...thanks again..

  • @markhyo hi I'm STEPPHAN2733 on FLICKR. I think that the 60D got a bad start even before it was released, you've done great in this video to make my opinion of it a whole lot more positive.Great job!

  • Do you have some work that you did with 60D that you can put up here? I am new to digital photography and would like to know what is seen as great photographs by professionals.

  • @ssgyt1475. I recently did a shoot a shoot in the snow with the 60D. You can view the slideshow on my website @ markwphotodotcom.

  • @markhyo thanks for your response - I saw the photos of the Hamby's on your site. Are these the ones you were referring to? They are great photos. Did you do any post processing on these photos? How do you go about doing post processing?

  • @ssgyt1475 I found your video on using adobe light-room for portraits. That pretty much what I wanted to know. Thanks all the same.

  • Nice job Mark.. I agree the 60D is a great tool for professional work.
