I still don't get it. I know he was doing his job but in the time it took to get Jon out of there, he could have played the last song and everyone would have left by themselves. Sometimes the manual needs to go out the window.
hey guys, the cop was trying to do what he interpreted as his job. Whether or not he really was doesn't matter, the cop obeyed his sworn oath to protect and to serve, and Jon (and presumably his audience) willingly did as he requested.
What's wrong with that cop? A peaceful gathering of youth listening to a guitar and Jon Foreman's melodic voice? This was wayyyy before the Occupy Movement... so... I don't get it.
Yea the cop was being a bit of a jerk about it but the guy probably was at the end of his shift and wanted to go home.... I love Jon but he probably should have been a little quicker to listen to the cop in this case.
Christian? Really? Hebrews 13:17 says "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you."
@JoeCool6490 I don't want to argue with you but no I'm not lifting myself up by stating bible versus. I have plenty of my own problems, but i still think he should be setting an example. Delayed obedience is disobedience. He may have not been given the chance to explain himself bu the cop told them to leave. They needed to leave.
@Iamthepcguy Alright I guess you can see it that way if you'd like (i dont, i still see it as Jon being respectful and trying to explain to the cop that these are kids enjoying free songs from a famous artist and one final song would not hurt anyone) but that doesnt give you the right to question the authenticity of his faith. "Christian? Really?" come on you 21st century Pharisee.
@Iamthepcguy A cop is not a "leader". Wearing a badge and serving as a revenue generator for the state does not give a person "authority" over people who do not wear badges and serve as revenue generators of the state. It also does not give someone more rights. This country is systematically being transformed into a fascist and dictatorial police state and too many people are just sitting back and allowing it.
@ingloriousbassturd it's called the voices, jon said it would be on vice verses, but i guess it didn't make the cut. however, word is, a good number of unreleased switchfoot songs are going to be used as the soundtrack to a movie theyll be making called "fading west"
That wasn't all that bad. I grew up in Hillsborough County. Some of the cops there have a real power trip. This guy was pretty nice about it. I've seen worse. It definitely looked like a communication breakdown. It sure beats the attitude by UF Police in Gainesville. "Don't taze me bro!"
I have the most respect for jon and the boys. BUT, jon did act a little rebellious by continuing to play over the cop yelling. I don't feel he intended to be rude though. Jon isn't that kind of guy
@arghomez What are you talking about? Jon did NOTHING wrong. He was trying to be soooooooooo nice to this "cop." That cop is on a power trip. He didn't know who Jon was, and probably judged him for having long hair or something.
@scars73 Jon didn't know the cop, that is true. The cop was a little abusive of his power, but after the cop said no, Jon started to play something. Haha, that is true, he probably did it because of the long hair.
@arghomez I wonder what law Jon Was breaking? Was there some kind of curfew? Cops are there to enforce laws and protect people, not make thier own. It seemed like a peaceful gathering to me. This is the USA.
I totally agree with the way Jon handled the situation. You can see the guy whispering to Jon and saying the officer said only one more song and that was clearly the first time they had talked. Then, when he started playing that last song the officer started handling the situation rudely. He had never talked to Jon before so how was Jon disrespecting? He was being very nice about it and introducing himself and the officer still grabbed his arm and drug him out of the crowd. Police officers thes
It hurts to see Jon being pulled like that.seriously. But I can't hate the cop. both parties committed mistakes. they should've communicated before it went out of hand.
Even though we should always respect the law, I actually like how Jon reacted.
He clearly believes the police was ok with one more song, even after protesting a little, so then he asks if the fams want to hear 24. And thats's when the police officer gets forceful, it was just miscommunication.
But my favourite bit is when Jon holds out his hand to him & introduces himself, with a bit smile on his face :P If i were the police officer after hearing your name I'd probably let you play all night :P
Jon should have been a better role model and stopped when the officer told him to stop! Instead, he kept playing and at that point the officer shouldn't get scolded for doing his job. Yeah, he was on private property, but if you actually read what had happened, you would see Jon did nothing wrong. It's not like he jumped a fence with all those kids and started playing songs. He had a show booked at the Amphitheater. Therefore he was ALLOWED on the private property, he came out of the building in which he performed and played a small show for some fans afterwords. So he had every right to be there.
@chadwalkermusic authority given to police officers is not "god-given"...but i agree.jon should not have undermined this police officer's authority in front of all these people
Did anyone see how the cop at the end just pulled jon the way he did? SO RUDE!! some ppl think they can do anything just cuz they r in uniform. we have a right to assemble anyways:3 God bless jon foreman for being so cool throughout all the foolishness-_-

i like Jon's music and maybe the cop could have let him play 1 more song, but the point is that he said no, and Jon kept playing anyways. that surprised me, but then again I don't know Jon. he shouldn't have started playing again.
i think it's very cool of Jon to play a couple songs after the show though.

i live in TAMPA! OMG WHY DIDNT I HEAR ABOUT HIM?!?!?! psh & yeah why is it always florida (mostly tampa) cops ruining EVERYTHING?! i.e janice joplin jim morrison etc etc
that's just an unreasonable police officer.....I mean, if all you saw what I did....that was a pretty bad and rude attitude....deffinitly don't like it.....Jon you rock!!!...and everybody...always be respectful with authority...it don't matter how they act....God tell's us to obey!!! great example Jon!!!!
This makes me mad. It's not like anyone was causing any trouble, they just stood there there peacefully and listened to peaceful songs. The songs he was singing were helping people. The cop should've just let Jon play one more. Nevertheless, awesome performance. : )
I feel bad for Jon! I mean he's like the nicest most down to earth guy ever and I can see where the cop's coming from, but I mean when stuff like that happens, it kinda rattles you inside. I love how chill Jon kept the whole time though and I love his persistence until the end.
Wow, this cop had nothing better to do, in Miami no less? I am sure there is plenty of crime and people doing drugs at the club that he should be worrying about, than someone playing amazing spiritual music on the street. This is so wrong. And I bet Jon, being the awesome guy that he is, didn't even press charges. Some cops are on such a power trip.
......Did anyone get chills... like Judas' kiss of betrayal in that handshake. The officer used that to drag Jon away.. an act of friendship turned wrong. Eeshhh.
That's horrible! the cop wouldn't even shake his hand or address Jon. Jon asked a simple questing "On more song, please?" the officer didn't reply and just kept shouting at him. I think Jon handled it very well and the cop didn't..... : /
Hey here is an idea. How about instead of judging Jon (who I count as one of my friends) for "not respecting the police" Lets take the time to read what happened AND the response from Jon. As many of you might not know Jon writes for the Huffington Post and he did an article on this incident. The links to both this article and the original CNN article are below. Jon is strong Christian and did act with respect . And actually Jon did nothing illegal. He was on private property.
@matthewturneradams do you have a link to the HuffPo article he wrote about on this? I have read some of his stuff on there but don't remember reading anything about this. Thanks so much. God bless.
@Switchfootfan1594 its more that i just don't enjoy this type of music so much. I have great respect for them however. They do seem to care about the music their making rather than just trying to make money
i hate when cops think they an do whatever they want just cuz they have a badge. honostly too many people become officers for that reason. yes he has authority but he also has to learn to listen to people. no one wants people to just give orders witthout being listened to. i think jon handled this sistuation pretty good. thats just my opinion..
@FreelySoaring it is. the cop wouldn't even shake his hand or address Jon. Jon asked a simple questing "On more song, please?" the officer didn't reply and just kept shouting at him. I think Jon handled it very well and the cop didn't..... : /
well....uuuummm....Jon did a great job on handling the situation (= good & FREE publicity)....and....uuummm....some cops just think they have all the power. Nough said.
@moosenstine You do not understand the meaning of that. Caesar did not own personal freedom and liberty. That passage is used by crooked people and ignorant people to try to coerce Christians into submitting unto unlawful authority. America is becoming a fascist dictatorship and police state and the government is using the church to deceive us into submitting to them by giving up our freedom and liberty.
You won't reply to this, though, because you are a paid government shill.
I don't see a problem in the way Jon was acting at all. There wasn't a riot going on, I think one more song would have been fine. It just sounds like the cop was annoyed by a bunch of kids standing around listening to music - he obviously didn't get the significance of a person seeing their favorite lead singer in such a personal and up close light. It means a lot to people that Jon comes out for the after show. The cop could have handled it better.
The bottom line is, that officer acted out of his authority, he wasn't mean or rude, and Jon should have obliged. Period. It's fine to have asked if he could play one more song but when he was told "no", that should have been it. Everyone was caught up in the moment, in the music, and thought it was all fun, but the feedback the officer got is that his authority wasn't being respected.
thumbs up if you dislike "Fisher"....dumb cop ruining the aftershow. i understand that he was just doing his job, but i mean, cmon, he wouldn't even listen to Jon.
The off duty officer was hired by the venue. One of his jobs was to clear the parking lot after the show. The venue is liable for anything that happens on property, even after the show. They reasonably want it cleared. Jon was unaware of this, and thought the officer was confused or accusing them of something unlawful. Jon apologized, sort of / mostly, and I think this is a simple mistake we can all forgive a good man of. The officer was in authority and had the right to clear them on his terms.
hmmm. not sure what to think about this. i understand the officer's position, i just wish he was more understanding of jon's situation. jon should have been a little more respectful of the officer. it says in Romans to obey the laws of your nation
I dont think Jon realised what was going on, he wouldnt ignore a request on purpose,
The officer was rude to Jon, when he asks him to move it, Jon offers his hand so they can shake and the officer ignores it, Jon was trying to be gracious,
the cop was doing his job, then again arent there worse things happening on the streets in the US that are worse than Jon playing music? hes is a nice guy, would never upset anyone on purpose,
why did Jon have to leave? who cares about the policemen's shift? were no police coming in to work the next shift? was Jon Foreman going to start a riot or a drug house by playing an acoustic guitar in an alley in Tampa?
why did Jon have to leave? who cares about the policemen's shift? were no police coming in to work the next shift? was Jon Foreman going to start a riot or a drug house by playing an acoustic guitar in an alley in Tampa?
After reviewing the video again, it appears that Off. Fischer said "I have shown you respect, now please show me some respect"...or something to that effect. This leads me to believe that he had already allowed him to continue prior to the beginning of this clip. I bet if we had the whole clip, we would have seen something to that effect. Notice that the red lights are on throughout the video, indicating the officer's presence prior to this encounter......
@echo52990 Yes, but I was coupling that with the fact that once the cop approaches, he says "I have shown you respect, now please show me some respect"...that is an indicator that he has already asked them and perhaps did allow them to continue, prior to the taping of this clip.....maybe making this the 2nd or third song he was allowed to play after being asked to stop...we don't have the whole video.....remember that.
@LeftyDefenceman I could see that being the case, except that at 3:25 you see jerome (at least I think it's jerome. it's dark) come and tell jon that he has one more song. it seems to be a miscommunication. the cop probably came during the first song in the video, and was under the impression that "one more song" meant the one that jon was playing.
The cop tried to be gracious, but the crowd and Jon chose to ignore his requests and attempt to keep going, which disrespected the officer's authority. If Jon wanted to be a role model, he would have listened the first time to the officer and packed up. As a mother, his impish smile and attempt to keep playing reminded me of a child trying to ignore his parent. :/ A little disappointed, but it's good he apologized, at least.
this is really sad that this had to happen. i think jon foreman is an INCREDIBLE and AMAZING dude, and i've been to his after-shows before. he's got a great heart for music and a great heart for God. it's just too bad that something had to happen like this.
the cop could've been a little nicer about kicking them out, but so could jon. i'm glad jon apologized about it though on his blog and he doesn't have a problem with officer fiscer because this happened.
I liked the preview of Vise Verses. Switchfoot is awesome, this is just one of those stupid moments where no one would like to give up their pride. Sheesh and I hate it when it happens to me. I guess the best thing would just to bow to authority. You know what? I prolly would done the same thing Jon did. I like what he did in his blog. Yea Jon felt bad about it. This is one of those time that shouldn't have been a story. Let go of your pride, man that is sometimes the hardest thing to do.
I'm behind Jon! Which other members of other bands would do something so awesome as an 'aftershow'? Big respect to him. The cop could have been more gracious or chosen to handle the situation better, but unfortunately he decided not to. He was still doing his job though.
SO SAD! Great guy who does great things with his time & money and this is the respect given to him as a person. Everyone was gathering quietly & peacefully, where are the lines for our 1st Amendment Rights?
I still don't get it. I know he was doing his job but in the time it took to get Jon out of there, he could have played the last song and everyone would have left by themselves. Sometimes the manual needs to go out the window.

@McJ0rd so do I, Jon is an amazing person. I love him to death. I'm so glad he's out there! Kept me from getting in bad music, he did.

What a douche! The cop, that is.

He was on private property.
matthewturneradams 1 year ago 6
@matthewturneradams do you have a link to the HuffPo article he wrote about on this? I have read some of his stuff on there but don't remember reading anything about this. Thanks so much. God bless.

i hate when cops think they an do whatever they want just cuz they have a badge. honostly too many people become officers for that reason. yes he has authority but he also has to learn to listen to people. no one wants people to just give orders witthout being listened to. i think jon handled this sistuation pretty good. thats just my opinion..

Render unto Caeser, that which is Caesar's, and unto God, that which is God's.........
I Am a Switchfoot fan........musically.......but not when disobeying a peaceful request from an officer.............
moosenstine 1 year ago

The cop could have handled it better.
lucyball94 1 year ago 22
The bottom line is, that officer acted out of his authority, he wasn't mean or rude, and Jon should have obliged. Period. It's fine to have asked if he could play one more song but when he was told "no", that should have been it. Everyone was caught up in the moment, in the music, and thought it was all fun, but the feedback the officer got is that his authority wasn't being respected.
newmexicoflygirl 1 year ago
thumbs up if you dislike "Fisher"....dumb cop ruining the aftershow. i understand that he was just doing his job, but i mean, cmon, he wouldn't even listen to Jon.
piehead320320 1 year ago 3
The off duty officer was hired by the venue. One of his jobs was to clear the parking lot after the show. The venue is liable for anything that happens on property, even after the show. They reasonably want it cleared. Jon was unaware of this, and thought the officer was confused or accusing them of something unlawful. Jon apologized, sort of / mostly, and I think this is a simple mistake we can all forgive a good man of. The officer was in authority and had the right to clear them on his terms.
Blindevilunderoath 1 year ago
hmmm. not sure what to think about this. i understand the officer's position, i just wish he was more understanding of jon's situation. jon should have been a little more respectful of the officer. it says in Romans to obey the laws of your nation

After reviewing the video again, it appears that Off. Fischer said "I have shown you respect, now please show me some respect"...or something to that effect. This leads me to believe that he had already allowed him to continue prior to the beginning of this clip. I bet if we had the whole clip, we would have seen something to that effect. Notice that the red lights are on throughout the video, indicating the officer's presence prior to this encounter......
LeftyDefenceman 1 year ago
@LeftyDefenceman the lights were on. That is true. but just because lights are on doesn't mean that you have to stop playing.
echo52990 1 year ago
@echo52990 Yes, but I was coupling that with the fact that once the cop approaches, he says "I have shown you respect, now please show me some respect"...that is an indicator that he has already asked them and perhaps did allow them to continue, prior to the taping of this clip.....maybe making this the 2nd or third song he was allowed to play after being asked to stop...we don't have the whole video.....remember that.
LeftyDefenceman 1 year ago
@LeftyDefenceman he was not approached the whole time i was there from the beginning
drummerboy0183 1 year ago

:/ A little disappointed, but it's good he apologized, at least.

this is really sad that this had to happen. i think jon foreman is an INCREDIBLE and AMAZING dude, and i've been to his after-shows before. he's got a great heart for music and a great heart for God. it's just too bad that something had to happen like this.
the cop could've been a little nicer about kicking them out, but so could jon. i'm glad jon apologized about it though on his blog and he doesn't have a problem with officer fiscer because this happened.
jon foreman, you're awesome.
