ATTENTION V STAR 1100 OWNERS! when I purchased a oil filter from my yamaha dealer, the new filter DID NOT come with the new o-rings! I asked for new ones and I had to purchase them separately! However I found a FRAM filter for the v star 1100 and the o-rings were included with the filter. I guess FRAM filters aren't so bad after all. And I've never had trouble with the FRAM filters either.
Just to give everyone heads up (especially those who are scared to do their own work) went to my local bike shop and bought a $300 Yamaha part to make it an external oil filter. Still looks sharp and I'm sure my next oil change will be much easier.
Great Video, thank you for taking the time to do this. I just started the attempt to change my oil on a 2007 1100 V Star Classic and new I needed help. Came in and found your Vid. I am sure I will be watching it a few more times during the oil change!
I got 2004 V Star Classic last month, now i need to change the oil... and im totaly not sure if i should do it myself or pay lots for professionals to do this. This vid makes me think its time consuming but pretty easy however it might get tricky if i bump into problems that i dont know how to solve! any advices?
The hardest part you may come across is rusted bolts on the exhaust. Use penetrating oil like Jax's or liquid wrench on them if you have a problem. Reassemble with anti-seize on the threads. Remember you work rusted bolts back and forth dont just use brute force! Use the correct tools {remember this is a metric bike}. Take your time and note how items were installed and it should be fairly easy. I will try to talk you through it if run into problems. Good luck.
Thanks so much for your reply. I decided not to take any risks and i gave it to the mechanic (Cycle Therapy in New York, BOO!) which happened to be a HUGE mistake because he overcharged me and added a nice scratch to my front fender, and i had to convince him for like 30 minutes it was his fault.
I have learned my lesson, to take chance and do it myself. I ride a lot and it wont be too long till i change oil again. If you dont mind i will contact you then if i need some instructions.
Nice video, but it takes a whole lot longer to change you oil ans filter on the 1100. Your choices are enjoy the hour spent changing the oil, put on an Oil Relocation Kit (ORK) and just have a spin on filter to change or take the bike to a dealer. Very poor design by Yamaha
I just bought a new 2008 1100 Siverado. This video convinced me to let the professionals do the oil filter chamges. Those hot pipes are not something I want to fo fool with. The in between oil changes are easy enough.
This was a good video. I just got a 2005 xvs1100 classic with no manual. It is my first bike and this video convinced me to not do my own maintenance. Any advice would be much appreciated.
I am not for sure if the procedure is same for the smaller 600-650 cc bike. If it is awesome.

My pleasure, and no there should be no need to do anything to the carbs.

thx for sharing, did you have to tinker with the carb afterwards?

you didn't mention anything about the foot rest. Does that assembly need to be removed as well?
