Though the Wankel engine has had a series of technical problems for several decades now (and still do, to some extent), I just love their combination of elegant simplicity, compact size, and excellent power-to-weight ratio that NO reciprocating engine can match. If any company can address the remaining issues (such as low thermal efficiency and high oil consumption) of the Wankel to a significant degree, it's Mazda.
There's a lot of mis-information here. The L10A in 67 had aluminum flat housings as does this 16X. The 13A had the same stroke as this motor and Mazda still has not made any officail announcement regarding the introduction of this in a car or wheat it will be called.
Hope that the Mazda's next renesis can come with the X-rotor engine, not two, but 3-rotors. In respect, it will be 24X renesis. Let's hope for the first super car to come up with that, minimum 400bhp, I bet. Let us dream on, ZoomZoom
You won't see any 24x around. Unless Mazda produced the engine, which I doubt. You'll see a 32x at most, those should boast a shit load of horsepower.
@FourSidedPiston Probably not, yeah. Would be nice if Mazda madea 2.4L Rotary. If the 16X makes as much power, etc as they expect, this will be a huge leap in rotary tech.
cant wait til this comes out! so excited, exactly wat ive been waiting for!!! [kinda glad i havent bought one yet..
but im still pretty worried cause its made of aluminum instead of cast iron, lighter but not as strong... im afraid of it melting ot wearing out on the inside.
All rotaries are cast iron, this is the first aluminum block rotary.
Also, I doubt the block being aluminum will be an issue since people's horror stories about "unreliable" rotaries are mostly due to running lean and then knock tearing up the apex seals, or not keeping oil topped up. Not like piston engine where you might toss a crank through the block or destroy the head.
It doesn't need it, it's probably going to be about 270hp and light as hell. Just plopping it in an RX-8 would have fantastic results, and clearly the next chassis will be even better sorted.

this is probably the longest stroke rotary made, also with direct injection, another first. also, the first all aluminum rotary. It's awesome!

The Furai is supposedly 450hp with a 3 rotor 20x. Would be nice to see if they put a 24x in there instead, with 3x800cc rotors :D
Cordius 3 years ago
the furai is a kind of 20B renesis and not a 20x

The thing i love the most about this engine is the aluminum casing. The cast iron is sort of old and heavy, glad they're getting rid of it.

I cud beat my meat just thinking about that.

yes they are aluminum the rotor housing are but the front and middle and back plates are iron.
