@oldobsoletecat I'm wondering this as well. I know it's usually covered up with dribs and drabs of glass, but what if you have a cheap pipe where that process was skipped?
alrighty.. is silver fuming what ever it is un healthy?? like if i smoked out of a bowl... will the silver fuming colorchangeing thing will be unhealthy??
@SDKsa1 Silver fuming is toxic when doing it without proper ventilation. I would imagine that if the silver were in the bowl then that would be quite toxic to the smoker as well. However, it isn't. The silver is on the sealed inner surface.
@TimiaGlass so you mean the bowl that been silverfumed is sealed under a coat of glass or somthing.. then its okay for me to smoke out of that bowl.. but just to make sure is there anyways i can clean my bowl just to make sure there is not silver fumes for me to inhale
@SDKsa1 Well, I can't say for sure since I can't see your pipe or know who or how it was made. An acid wash is about the only thing I know that would remove it. Something like nitric acid. But if I were you and I had doubts I would just toss the thing.
Do you realize the toxic fumes that silver puts off? When I bought my midrange I was very excited to try some fuming, you just can't do it on a HOT HEAD. I played with it, and didn't really get any great results, but I did manage to poison myself! I had a headache for 3 days straight, and kept vomiting. So it doesn't matter how much or little you fume, you should always use a respirator!
Do you burn off the silver fume with a high oxygen flame? Like if you were to make a fumed implosion and put dots of the fumed glass and burn the unwanted fume off.
1. Do whatever is needed so that you do not breathe the toxic vapours. 2. Experiment to find what works out best for your application. That's the fun part. As for me, I don't do a lot of fuming. Maybe 5 minutes a month.
wait until you see the new studio I have been building. it should be online and I shold be posting vids from it within the next month. you can get a low res sneak peak on my latest vid.

it does work but produced very different colors and results than in boro, byt then again the soft glass allows the use of gold and silver foil where boro just burns it up.
You are the man Timia, for real, you have significantly aided in improving my work. I can't thank you enough. Keep it up.

Could using a fumed glass pipe to smoke be toxic?
(silver)

Is a rubbing alcohol-salt solution too abrasive for cleaning silver- or gold- fumed glass if you don't want to rub off the fuming?
SeikoPsycho 2 years ago
I don't know. I've never tried it.
TimiaGlass 2 years ago
personaly i just use rubbing alcohol to clean my glass pipe. but idk if it messes wit the fuming or not
juggalo6106 2 years ago
No it doesn't rub off the fuming, almost all of my glass is fumed and ive cleaned it all a few times over.

you need very good ventilation but you should allredy have that if your useing an oxygen torch

GrangerGlass 3 years ago
Actually, I have done that. I suppose there are many techniques for working with fumed metals. Personally, I don't do much with fuming.

does a silver-fumed piece of glass
darken (oxidize) just like a silver piece of jewlery?
do you have to encase it to protect it?
or will encasing just burn it off?
catman72 3 years ago
It can be encased and often is. The few pieces I have around have not tarnished but they are not all that old either so I'm not sure about that.
TimiaGlass 3 years ago
so i can just encase it normaly?
any "right" way to do it?
i'm worried about tarnishing because i want to make pendants, and human skin tarnishes silver very fast.
BTW, don't we need a mask when fuming?

Actually, it is O2 that tarnishes silver, The oils in our skin help to burnish off tarnish and help to avoid tarnishing.

thanks for showing this.
one question though-
isn't fuming hazardous?
i see no protection, and i hear no ventilation.
is this ok?
catman72 4 years ago
Fuming produces toxic gases and ventilation is important. The area I am working in is well ventilated. Can you hear the freight train?
TimiaGlass 4 years ago
could not hear anything but then i put the volume to max and heard the venting.
thanks.
i always thought you needed a mask as a precaution, too.
was i wrong?
catman72 4 years ago
Oh that is so cool. I'm suffering from boro envy. What a wonderful technique.
sheepinarowboat 4 years ago
Fuming is just plating. I would think it would work on soft glass just as well as boro.
TimiaGlass 4 years ago
