Gay marriage IS in fact an extension of the "love" ideology, contrary to the statement made by Mr. Brown. Even today, a lot of cultures don't marry for love. In Japan, people marry for the financial benefits and to bear children. When the children are grown, most of them then divorce because there is no reason for them to maintain the relationship. The pioneers of this country and many of those who came after would marry due to the amount of money one had or due to the skillsets one could use to facilitate survival of the family. This is when these laws regarding marriage came into being in America. It wasn't until the late 1950's that marriage started to change from an idea of survival to an idea of love and it grew in leaps from 1960-80's to an only love ideal.
