"Redefine marriage?" Not at all. Lakota chief Crazy Horse had one or two male spouse(s) and many other Native American nations also have had what we now call same-sex marriages. Ethnographers have documented this. Some examples: Omahas, Zapotecs, Mohaves, Crow, Hidatsa, Ojibwa, Winnebago, Yuma and Timucua. Other cultures too. In 17th century Fukian Province China, same-sex marriages between gay men seem to have been common. And in West Africa, "woman marriage[s]" --a practice by many tribes.
Someone needs to tell Brian Brown to his face he is LYING about kids being taught same-sex marriage in the schools.
He said it twice and no one called BULLSHIT! on it. They have gotten tons of mileage on that lie, and it needs to be shut down. Politifact has checked it and called it out for the lie it is.
Great idea! Tonight I'm going to get on one knee, look deep into my partner's eyes and say, "I love you so much, would you do me the honor of benefitting reciprocally with me?"
Oh I LOVE it every time I watch this. Brian Brown is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO angry that his voice is trembling. He and Maggie Gallaghaer may finally be realizing just how non relavent they and their NOM organization are. I have never seen Brian SO angry with that trembling angry voice.
i like how nay sayers to gay marriage say "there will be huge consequences", but they fail to specify exactly what those consequences are, and the evidence for it.
I notice that Brown has to go begging for equal democratic votes for dead people, talking about "the overwhelming consensus of all of human history" - because the consensus of the present day USA no longer backs him. Polls consistently show support for marriage equality rising through the 50% mark (and continuing to rise).
There's only one thing the anti marriage equality people hate more than being called bigots. Homos. That was his major horrible change that we have seen from other states getting married that we should be tolerant and that bigots are called bigots. If anyone wants to redefine something it's NOM wanting to redefine bigot.
What a surprise - white straight men trying to quash a minority group. They did this to blacks, other religions, god knows who else. Shameful. GO GAY MARRIAGE!!!
Um... if you want a group of people to not have the same rights that you have, then by definition, you are bigoted. You can't say "gay people cannot be married but I'm not a bigot" any more than you can say "I support segregation, but I'm not a racist".
Is Pat Robertson still alive? What a surprise. He can rot in his bigots club along with Newt Gingrich, Jerry Falwell and the other religious pricks who are about 4000 years behind the times
When a person says that people should be able to vote on if they want to allow gay people to marry it makes me wanna rage. I just wanna repeat what they just said back to them slowly. " You want larger group to vote on what a smaller group is allowed to do...." America was founded on "every man is created EQUAL"....and now we want marriage EQUALITY....bigots are bad a figuring things out it seems.
Brian brown needs to quit worrying about gay marriage and maybe focus his attention on getting him and his bitch Maggie Gallagher on a weight loss program.
I would love to find a map chart of countries that have accepted same sex marriage along with the dates or number of years they have had same sex marriage so that we can put to rest once and for all the stupid argument that at no time in history has a country survived by legalizing same sex marriage
Guess what Bryan? Marriage HAS ALREADY been redefined: 'gay marriage is IN the dictionaries (Webster, the OED etcetera) and everyone is using the term. It's OVER.
The whole 'definition of marriage' is a garbage argument. no, they're just going for the fags.
And what's funnier is that he's going on about "we're already seeing consequences in Massachusetts." Except... no, we're not.
Why don't people ever call Maggie and Brian on their lies? Marriage has not been the same for eons. It was about two men exchanging a barely pubescent girl (or 2, or 8) as property for eons until the last few decades. A good change, but a change none the less.

"It will have serious consequences." What, you mean like here in the U.K., or Canada, or Sweden, or Norway, where the consequences have been more people getting married? As for the bullshit about "democracy," sorry, your country isn't a pure democracy. Pure democracies are basically mob rule; the judicial courts exist in your country SPECIFICALLY to prevent mob rule from dictating the rights of minorities. Before Prop 8, there had NEVER been a single instance where the rights of minorities...
...had been voted on by the majority. Never. And there's a very good reason for that: what would've happened during the civil rights movement, do you think, if the rights of minorities had been voted on by the majority? Back of the bus please. As for this bullshit about "every civilisation in history not accepting homosexuality" errr, do these people eve read anythong, or do they just say whatever bullshit flashes through their minds? Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, various...
..."celtic" tribes, various sects within Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, various Oriental cultures and more than I can realistically list not only accepted homosexual relationships, but enshrined it as a very particular type of human love. Certain native American tribes called it being "Twin Soulled." And this moron can bleat on and on about the "consequences" of homosexual marriage, but he never states what they are. Ever. None of them ever do.
Let me add that in certain Papuan societies young boys are 'married' to each other to be somewhat akin of what we may call 'soul mate's throughout their lives. They are allowed to share wives, to have sex with each other and are expected to take over the responsibilities and care of each others family should something render them incapable... death, disease, etc. Yet here we have a bloated white man preaching on about what traditional marriage is. Pathetic.

Gay marriage IS in fact an extension of the "love" ideology, contrary to the statement made by Mr. Brown. All I saw Mr. Brown doing was demonize gays and attempting to correlate the gay movement with divorce, as though the two go hand-in-hand. Why is the divorce rate going up? Because we as a nation expect people to stay in monogamous relationships enduring 50 years because we as a whole are living longer, when there are people who just plain don't want to. Just look at Newt Gingrich.
Even today, a lot of cultures don't marry for love. In Japan, people marry for the financial benefits and to bear children. When the children are grown, most of them then divorce because there is no reason for them to maintain the relationship. We as Americans are lucky because the idea of marriage is no longer that the female is property meant for rearing the children. In fact, the very first step in changing marriage was by having the privilege of being able to pick one's own spouse.
I know that I'm stating the obvious but what Brian Brown is most afraid of is a homosexual relationship being as accepted by society as a married heterosexual relationship is. While NOM is prolifically against marriage, they have also come out against Civil Unions and Domestic Partnerships as they see them as "mirrors" of a married heterosexual relationship But what was most interesting was what was said between 10:25 and 11:47. (cont)
@mrquiet2009 (cont) NOM wants to dictate to us how we should lead our lives and our relationships. They want us to love on their terms and their terms only. We cannot inherit our loved ones estate as married spouses, only as "reciprocal beneficiaries" ( a legal term that is being used, in my humble opinion, to lessen our relationships) As Rev. Sharpton said "So, they can only share them if they do it in the language that you agree with...". These people want to tell us how we should live.
I'm confused. Did anyone else notice a lack of the word "Love"? In America, marriage is about love. Why did no other cultures have gay marriage? Because today's culture is the only one in which marriage is about "LOVE." Not ownership, not property, not dowries, not children. Love. When a culture changes the definition of marriage to be based on love, that culture must in turn present the opportunity for all of its citizens to express that same thing. *TBC*
@MoonKnight4Evr86 What planet are you living on? Ask any person getting a divorce if marriage is only about "LOVE". You can have and be in love without getting married. Marriage affects taxes, real estate, inheritance, etc.
@jackson23220 Marriage has those benefits, but if you ask any person in America why they married the person they did, they will most likely say something along the lines of "Because I love him/her." And divorce is a completely different issue.
@jasunmarkdotcom I was speaking mostly from a historical viewpoint in which marriage was more about finances than emotion. Many cultures embrace the idea of gay marriage today. Sorry for the confusion.
@MoonKnight4Evr86 it is now, but historically it has been about survival. The pioneers of this country and many of those who came after would marry due to the amount of money one had or due to the skillsets one could use to facilitate survival of the family. This is when these laws regarding marriage came into being in America. It wasn't until the late 1950's that marriage started to change from an idea of survival to an idea of love and it grew in leaps from 1960-80's to an only love ideal.
@MoonKnight4Evr86 A lovely sentiment. Unfortunately, this is a legal, not conceptual issue. A legal marriage does not happen in the church, but in the city hall office. Love does not stand up in court or modify my IRS form.
@jackson23220 No, but love is the catalyst for marriage in the first place in America. That was my point. Having children, owning a home, anything like that are all co-incidental. In America we fall in love with the person before we ask them to marry. THAT is the biggest change in marriage in history, a factor that historically has had no effect on marriage. Marriage is about emotion rather than human survival anymore, especially in America.
Marriage isnt getting redefined for the first time now, it has been TONS OF TIMES, women bartered for land and goods, polygamy, incest, NOM is SORELY misinformed
NOM is an organization of intolerance and hatred. There is no evidence that same sex parents raise dysfunctional adults. They can not cite one study, not produced by fellow bigots, that asserts this. They make this ruse up to try and have something besides a religious basis for their bigotry. Meanwhile the rest of us move justice and equality forward despite them.
Brian brown seems like a squeaky little faggot. Typical. Well done Al & Thomas.

It wasn't until the late 1950's that marriage started to change from an idea of survival to an idea of love and it grew in leaps from 1960-80's to an only love ideal.

@the1tigglet Yes, I'm well-aware of this. I address the changing longevity of our lives in another post. This doesn't change anything I have stated.

Why do these professional opponents of same-sex marriage usually appear as a bleep on my GAYDAR?

I looked up that divorce reform thing he was talking about... let me quote you something from that page:
"Other bills include one that would only allow divorces when they are in the best interests of the children"
Do they really think that one spouse wouldn't just move out? I see no situation where it would benefit children to FORCE the parents to stay together.

The fear in Brian Brown's eyes is not for marriage being redefined, but for his job being redefined.......as nonexistent and irrelevant.
