  • "hmmmnn.... contact" i always LOL hard with that.

  • 30 year old American technology.... Still would take Iran in a day or two.

  • Charlie was barking because he heard a couple of 'Cats.

I'm sure the F-18 is a lovely aircraft and a worthy successor to the Tomcat, but no more bad-ass looking war bird than the F-14 ever existed, nor likely ever will. It looked the part from every angle. If looks could kill, the F-14 was deadly without even firing a shot.

  • Just heard on an aircraft carrier documentary from a Nimitz crewman. Nimitz = Never Imagined Myself In This Zoo. *Lol*

  • 3:10 F-14 jousting match!

  • 2:25 Improbable as the film might be - If you do not get a bit of a rush when the F 14's do a low fast pass over the yacht, then check your pulse, you might be dead.

  • F-14 vs. Zero. Take your pick.

  • that A-6 appeared out of nowhere

  • Man I love somebody's idea of the current USS Enterprise going back in time and meeting it's mother. Admiral Halsey tried to raise funds to turn the original USS Enterprise into a museum but sadly since not enough money was raised, it was turned into scrap

  • man, I miss the tomcat

  • People from 1941 looking up and seeing F-14 Tomcats...it would be like they were looking at flying saucers.

  • There's nothing to debate. If Google is not to be believed then a check of the names of all U.S. senators in 1941 would prove it. It would be a perfect, but rear, example of being able to prove a NEGATIVE.

  • @isuckaman I don't need to check any list of U.S. senators in 1941. Once agaaaaaaiiin, it's a science fiction film, not a documentary. The list of characters is fictional.

    Time to move on.

  • There never was a senator Samuel Chapman.

  • @isuckaman I don't see anyone debating that. It is, after all, a science fiction movie, not a documentary. Pretty much every character in this movie is a fictional construct. The only real "character" is the U.S.S. Nimitz, which was actually in service during the filming.

  • i think commander yellin did ok, a US navy officer is bound by honor to defend the United States - no matter what the year is.

  • It sucks that the Iranians are the only ones to fly the tomcats now

  • I've always loved this movie. Very well made and written. If it were done today, it would be a nothing but a CGI mess for those with ADHD.

  • 2:22 so nice!

  • Wonder if any astronauts were doing the flying in this movie (astronaut Scott Altman was one of the naval flyers in Top Gun)

  • @Dogapsa the captain was bound by his oaths to defend American citizens.

He did what was expected of him.

  • If anyone realized, Charles Durning was a decorated Army Ranger in Europe in World War 2. Landed in Normandy and was severely wounded one week after D-Day. He also was involved in the Battle of the Bulge.

  • Great movie. Very cool scene. Thank you JerseyCaptain

  • Whoever disliked this needs to be shot.

  • Best scene in the whole movie Jolly Rogers FTW!

  • someone *must* remake this film with the full-scale battle between the two forces ^-^

  • Martin Sheen as the young idealist .. so awesome lol

  • 4:10 Two Japanese Zero.... Two WHAT?!!! xD jajaja Great scene!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @stableshadow Stupid comment gets deleted. ROFL And you get blocked. Have a happy! Idiot...

  • Did everyone miss the point??? The Senator has a chance to do the hot chick, and he didn't!!! Was he gay or just not a Kenedy??

  • @RoadkillFXSTC Maybe he just couldn't get it up.

  • The F-14 Tomcat the best ride the US Navy had. Sadly missed**==

  • This is my favorite movie of all time... no CGI effects! GREAT

    Thanx JerseyCaptain!!!!!

  • @Dogapsa given the same situation i would let them know as little as possible and keep them quarantined. Also the prospect of defending pearl harbor from being attacked is rather tempting and if i thought i was never going to my own time you would have no choice but to interact with your enviroment. I would blow those motherfuckers back to the stone age and take my orders from the commander in cheif president eisenhower!

  • 6:09 listen..to the sound of freedom....

  • Great flix. A childhood favorite.

    THE MIGHTY TOMCAT!

  • i agree, i've been looking for this movie and can't find them on any video stores here in the Philippines, I wish they would reproduce copies of this great movie :-)

  • @frankydman

Cool Trek idea, My idea was a videogame where the Nimitz becomes a time machine to influence the most famous historic battles with the help of the elderly historan Mr. Tideman(CAG Owen from the end of the original movie). Some of the side missions would be Marine insurrection, one of which would be called "Trojan Horse".

  • I love this movie! They should do a remake of this movie!

  • Well, a while back I came up with an idea for a spin-off:

The current USS Enterprise (CVN-65), goes back in time, same instance as this, only THIS time, it ends up at the Battle of Midway, where it meets its predecessor, the USS Enterprise (CV-6) Not sure about the details yet.

  • That sounds badass!

  • Sad part is, you are one of only three people to have said anything about my idea (Sad face goes here)

  • @frankydman Now there are 4 people :-) That would be an awesome movie!!!

  • @killtroy811 A remake with F-22's or F-35's That is if they have a naval version of those. That would be cool!

  • @slabsaw

So what is your opinion on my idea, reguarding the Enterprise?

  • Excellent idea. It wouldnt be the same story just modernized. Instead it would put a twist on the story nobody would know.

  • MMMmmmmm contact XD hahahaha

  • Aaahhhhh... the joys of pre CGI movies! Incredible sequence...

  • Launch the ready alert, Which would have included a tanker for this pair of flying Caddillacs, Ahh The 80s when greed was good. If only we could go back in time....Awesome movie.. thanks for the memories....

  • I have experienced Jet flybys like that! They ring the teeth out of your skull. I especially love the fact that when they fly over they go vertical for what seems like an eternity, which of course they can!

  • I loved this movie!

  • One major thing, radar guided missles. Oh it wouldnt be a fair fight if it was ship to ship. A Harpoon Missile could sink a ship 100 mile out,or a phonixe Missle from the f14 can knock out a bomber a 100 miles away

  • i saw this movie and truethfully outside the f-14 part of the movie i really think they could have done more with it.

to me the movie always felt sort of ... lacking in something. not sure what.

might have been cool if the Nimitz had had one escort come along with it and it end up engaging a jap sub or something. dont know just my opinion.

  • That would have been, cool...Maybe some one could do a re-make.

  • That's the beauty of it though... its imperfections make it memorable. It's more "real"... not through oversight or omission, but through purposeful unanswered questions, what-if's, and why's...

  • hey does any1 know where i can see this movie online?(plz reply)

  • Just buy the movie and watch it.

  • @JerseyCaptain lol.. I believe it's $3.99 at Walmart.

  • @hellkid94 Get the Blue Underground Limited Edition 2-disc DVD with the 3-D cover that has the hilarious Jolly Rogers squadron interviews.

I didn't know before but Charles Durning was the 2nd most decorated veteran actor next to Audie Murphy. His character as Sam Chapman is almost an alter-ego of himself as a young soldier fighting against the Axis powers in WW2.

  • Love it, just love it. I want to find this movie some place and buy it. It is amazing to see an F-14 in real life, just think if you were from 1941 and saw one. The first jet fighter was years away.

  • @bat29501 Actually the first Jet fighter was already in service by 1941. The ME262 was close to a decade ahead of anything the Allies had and had been flying over German skies since 1939.

  • @chadray - The ME262 was not flying in 1941 in any operational condition. The Jumo engines were under development and not ready until 1944. The flight of the airframe in 1941 was using a piston engine powerplant with propellers. The British had their Meteor in operational squadrons earlier than the ME262. And the US P80 Shooting Star, a much superior aircraft to the ME262, was only a few months behind.

  • Considering that the English had the first prototype jet engine in the lab by 1939, why would the senator have not heard of the concept of a jet aircraft, the only thing that should shock them is the speed and size.

  • Yea, jet fighters are huge compared to the prop fighters of WWII. I once saw a picture of an F4U flying alongside an F-18, really big difference in terms of size.

  • I yhink he mentions that he is on the senate arms commity? So it would be shock that somthing could be developed to such an extent without his knowledge.

I might be wrong been awhile since I saw the whole show.

  • I just want to clear something up. Even though the US Navy retired back in '06, thats not the end of the story. As of now, it is still in service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. So, in a way, the Tomcat still survives to this day, even though they aren't American

  • If a person hard pressed from the 1940s saw two F-14As roaring past with wings in full sweep, bellowing smoke from those TF30s, bricks would be shat.

I use to shit bricks seeing them spool up on touch and goes at Oceana.

  • Hell yeah..... Imagine if they saw f-117's.....they would certainly not know what the fuck that would be. Flying triangles..

  • UFOs lol

  • I can't believe they retired the tomcat. I was so sad I actually kinda cried a little. Weird but they were just such an amazing plane.

  • the Tomcats had become too maintanence intensive. & hard to upgrade.

  • @shadowxps

You are right. They were the most "sexy" planes ever to be build. (next to the good old spitfire of course),

The F14 had much more potential, just liike the MIG 29 (wich was updated to the MIG 35)

  • there not amazing.............. there the best there is

  • Gr8...I never saw an F-14 being aerial refueled...Kewl...Thanx for sharing

  • i loved this movie as a kid

  • gods but I miss the F-14

  • frankydman... Also, Grumman built carrier aircraft for the US Navy in the early 30's as well. BTW your idea about CVN 65 meeting CV 6 is way cool!

  • Yes indeed, most notably The F4F wildcat, and the F6F hellcat with the powerful pratt and whitney double wasp producing 2850 hp with methonal water injection.

  • I don't mean to be rude mgrande11, but I think you got the wrong engine. You said that the Grumman F6F Hellcat used the Pratt and Whitney double wasp. Well, my Research says that they used the Pratt and Whitney R-2800. Is it possible that we are talking about the same engine?

  • I know this reply is about 2 months late, but it it is only because you didn't reply directly to my comment. Anyway, thanks for the comment. In fact, you are the only person thus far who has said anything thus far regarding my idea for a spin-off of this movie

  • Hi franky, the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 is indeed the same thing as the Double Wasp, and it produced 2800hp on 115-octane fuel with water injection. The idea for that movie would be cool, you'll get my $8.

  • instead of the Japanese just shoot down the French...granted they always surrender

  • DID YOU KNOW: The manufacturer of the F-14 Tomcat, Grumman, was also the manufactuer of the 2 primary USN carrier-based fighters during World War II, the F4F Wildcat, and its sucessor, the F6F Hellcat. To add to that list, Grumman also made the USN's primary torpedo bomber, the TBF Avenger.

  • You are right, they are not Zeroes. TO be specific, they are American T-6 Texans.

  • ya but there are virtually no zeroes left in the world. tgs are the closest thing to a zero you can get, provided you make the neccesary changes in the canopy and paint job.

  • true...

but the zeros in Pearl Harbor (2001) were PRETTTYYYY convincing to me..

not to insult....just to put my input ya know?

  • No, no dont worry about it. A little discussion is great. But that is most observant of you to note how realistic the zekes were in pearl harbor. They actually stripped down planes and totally, and I mean totally redesigned them to be indentical to the real thing. One of the few accurate things about that movie. :)

  • marvel, there is a fully operational zero stationed in Iwakuni Japan

  • hey, my nephew is at Iwakuni. I'll have to ask him about it.

  • I just had an idea for a sequel or a spin off off this movie. Imagine, the current USS Enterprise (CVN-65) it goes back in time, same instance as this. Only THIS time, it ends up at The Battle of Midway, and meets its predeccessor, USS Enterprise (CV-6). Not to sure about the details yet.

  • It's not Star Trek, Dogapsa. Even though this is fictional, it is reasonable to conclude that, given the same (or similar) circumstances, a military commander would probably make the same decisions Captain Yellin made.

  • @JerseyCaptain Oh come on dude, you know there's time travel training each navy commander goes through.

  • @JerseyCaptain Absolutely agree! 30 year Navy Flight Deck Veteran here. The CO did exactly what you would want any Commanding Officer to do. Get facts and then follow procedures.

  • man the f-14 were big beautiful birds, I loved them like a black man loves big white women! :)

  • i like the part where the tomcat is hitting near water then pulls out just hear those engines scream

  • no there's abt ten, but none of them fly

  • actually three now fly, but with american engines

  • Correction, EmperorTiger, one genuine Mitsubishi A6M Zero still has the original Sakae engine.

It is located in the Planes of Fame Museum, somewhere in California

  • where did they get the zeroes?

  • They bought it off K-mart

  • they were modified T-6 Texan trainers that were origanally modified for the Movie Tora, tora, tora. there are about 6 A6M Zero's nleft in the world & none of them fly. there also a number of modern replica zekes that have been built that do fly.

  • This was a great movie. I haven't seen it in over 6 years. Thank you for putting up a scene from the movie.

  • No no. Look at the actual history. The United States was not in a state of war with Japan until it attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. There was not a single U.S. soldier engaged against Japanese forces until after that. And none fighting on Chinese soil until early 1942, under U.S. General Stillwell.

And considering that Japan invaded Manchuria and fought the Chinese, your implication that the Japanese army was FORCED into the fight is ridiculous.

  • So the U.S. trained army pilots flying U.S. army planes out of Burma ( THE FLYING TIGERS ) doesnt count? And they were engaging Japanese forces before Pearl Harbour. Much like the the eagle squadron in the BATTLE OF BRITIAN.

  • Again, assisting allies to stave off the Japanese invasion and occupation of Indochina. Sorry, no rewriting of actual history is permitted on my video comments.

  • Flying tigers were officially no longer US military personel. they were mercenaries hired by Chaing Kai Shek & were part of the Chinease air force. their P-40's were assembled by Camco & were painted in Chinease colors, Also Gen. Claire Chennault was made a marshel of the chinease air force.

  • do you have this movie?, please upload it.

  • I am not going to upload the entire movie, dude. You're welcome to go and purchase it from your local video or bookstore if you wish.

  • It will be possible on youtube soon but it's best to see the dog fight on a bigger screen. I seen this movie when it came out about 1980 the dog fight scene was fun although it's like motorcyles vs bicycles (F 14 Tomcats vs Japanese zeros.)

  • first time I saw this it was at this exact scen where the F-14's and the Zero's face each other, but I never saw how the movi ends!?

  • the captain of the nimitz decides to launch an alpha strike & sink the japanease fleet, but just as the strike is launched the timestorm reappears & takes the carrier back to 1980. I will not reveal any details as I don;t want to totally ruin the movie for everyone who hasn't seen it. there are some surprises in the details.

  • i got good one for ok jap speed 200mhp more or les tomcat max 2.5 the tom cat wood go reel slowdown in the time slowdown jap plan maybee shot down tomcat

  • Alas, the TOMCAT is a memory now.

  • i love the f14.. i spent 4 years on the JFK and i just loved to look at that plane

  • oh shit.. i forgot it was the JOLLY ROGERS.. IN THIS MOVIE

  • that's right..VF-84. Now I think it's VFA-103 who are the Jolly Rogers..

  • You will notice the high nose up angle of attack and the wide wing sweep of the f-14s so the camera plane could keep up with them, and how they have to weave in and out to keep from overshooting the zeroes. Cool details.

  • most of her hi-tech systems are obsolite..not invented yet...as long as the planes can be supplied by JP4 jet fuel, we are golden, but yet we are in pre jet age....

it would be a hard battle...re-fueling mid-flight would be sooooo hard admit it...

  • we must know, alot of the Nimitz's capabilities are not up to date....lets face it, JDAMS ineffective, no sattelites, re-fueling the same thing, not available...Tomahawk cruise missles, render useless, no laser sights...Jet Fuel not available cause its 1941...Nimitz actually rendered though..

  • cuaght the tail end of your discusion. nimitz can go 20 years betwen refueling. lazer guided munitions would still function. satalite systems would be useless but they still have traditional navigating. their would be techs on bord who would know how refine jet fuel. the sonar and radar nothing of that era could get close without nimitz knowing. besides 1 F14 could stop an entire carrier heck an A6 could. 1 antiship missile and no way to stop it.

  • Well said, coldshot. I agree...I think that, while there would be some difficulties, the Nimitz could hold her own. And even civilian and military scientists in the WWII-era U.S., once they became aware of the Nimitz and had a chance to give her a thorough going-over, could have worked something out in terms of the shortfalls. And then, consider what the extant 1980s tech the Nimitz had would have done to change the existing 1841 tech! How the world might have changed!

  • techs who know how to refine jet fuel??? how would they do that in 1941??? no refinieries available on a carrier of this type, nor in the world....

the technology displayed by the Nimitz is so advanced, it may be rendered useless in this time...

i know its a movie, but facts and knowledge rules here..

  • Jet fuel is just a varient of karosene, refined a little finer. well within the abilities of a refinery in 1941. Nuclear reacter research was going on in Navy labrotories since 1939, so they already had scientists working on nuclear reactors. & they didn't really use microchips much in 1980's so the computers would have fairly easy for a 1940's electrical engineer to figure out.

  • laser guided bombs were not even in the sight of the US Military at this time son, still Star Wars kinda thinking...this movie is almost 30 years old...

  • didn't they use a primitive version of a lgb in the closing stages of Vietnam AFAIK.

  • they did..and the air force used them to knock out the toughest bridge in north vietnam..the dragon's jaw bridge

  • can you tell me who would guide the laser to target plz???? nothing on the Mitz could...

  • I saw that fat guy in blue and I thought Gilligans Island

  • The actor on Gilligan's Island was Alan Hale Jr., who died ten years after the making of this film (and served in the Coast Guard during WWII). However, this actor is Charles Durning, a WWII combat veteran (from an engineer battalion) who survived a massacre of his unit by German SS Troops when they were captured behind enemy lines. And he is still alive today.

Both are versatile and great actors.

  • I never knew that thanks for the info seams ironik that he playd the Skiper??

  • Or perhaps it "seems ironic" that he played the "skipper"? ROFL

    Sorry dude...I couldn't resist.

  • Its cool.

  • alert one this is eagle one, what have ya got?

    2 Japanese zeroes sir...

    2 whaaaat?

2 trophy class mitsubishi asm's....i mean they look brand new..

    classic

  • lol that's "two trophy-class Mitsubishi A6Ms in original condition!"

"A6M" was one of the designations assigned to the Zero (one of the few variants of the class).

  • This is my fifth favorite that Kirk Douglas stars in.

  • They couldn't make a movie like this today, it would have to have a pice of ass and a horrible love story which would fuck up the whole point of the flick.

  • Rather like "Pearl Harbor"? lol You're right of course. Which is why "Tora! Tora! Tora!" is still widely considered THE best Pearl Harbor movie.

    Good point, dude!

  • remake plz, instead of the USS Nimitz, lets see the USS Ronald Reagan...

Tomahawks, GBU's, JDAMS, etc now that would definitley one sided battle, never mind the air wing the Reagan has..

i belive the Reagan can be at home port under repairs, and kick the crap of the Imperial fleet, without ever launching a jet...

  • I would love to see this movie remade

  • Does anybody no where to download this film

  • I don't think so, buddy. You kinda just have to buy it. It comes in two different packages that I have seen. The movie itself, and then one with some nice extras (in the U.S., that's about $20.00 versus about $25.00). The extras are worth the few extra bucks.

  • no cgi+nice airmanship=good classic 80's film.

    reminds me of zipang

  • VF-84 JOLLY RODGERs Best fighter Sq. Go Jollys Go!!!!!

  • This looks like an interesting movie.

  • It really is! And well worth the cost (not that bad either...average DVD price).

  • I'll keep that in mind when I'm looking for movies to buy.

  • You're welcome, guys! Glad you enjoyed it! This is one of my most favorite movies...

  • I love this movie too, I wish I could have been an F-14 Pilot. I love that plane!!

  • Great movie....classic. Thanks for posting.

  • ah Beautiful Tomcats =)
