Obama is telling the truth. Lincoln actually wanted to maintain the union and didn't become anti-slavery until after they won the war. And the emancipation proclamation actually didn't free ANY slaves. It was for show, in order to motivate slaves in the south to rebel and join the union.

Lincoln did what he could while preserving the union. Trying to use his executive authority to free the slaves of union states would have lost him the support of those states, and it's very conceivable the South would have won and slavery would have continued well into the 20th century.

Obama was talking about priorities, and the need for a President to make somewhat unpopular decisions to reach a higher goal. And Lincoln is praised because he saved the country and because he personally made an effort to free slaves. JFK and RFK were praised for their civil rights work, despite the fact they didn't live to fulfill the most important steps towards equality. They were leaders who made the tough choice and led the country in the right direction.

Obama is telling the truth. Lincoln actually wanted to maintain the union and didn't become anti-slavery until after they won the war. And the emancipation proclamation actually didn't free ANY slaves. It was for show, in order to motivate slaves in the south to rebel and join the union.

Lincoln did what he could while preserving the union. Trying to use his executive authority to free the slaves of union states would have lost him the support of those states, and it's very conceivable the South would have won and slavery would have continued well into the 20th century.
There's nothing wrong with what Obama said.

I don't agree with Cenks point here. What Obama was pointing out is true, even in history the great changes were actually half-changes. It's not something he seems to "love" he's just showing that compromise is part of the way the world works. The problem is he's STARTING the negotiation with a compromising offer. You should START with the most opposite answer and get them to compromise in the middle. By starting in the middle you end up getting almost nothing of what you want.

Obama was talking about priorities, and the need for a President to make somewhat unpopular decisions to reach a higher goal. And Lincoln is praised because he saved the country and because he personally made an effort to free slaves. JFK and RFK were praised for their civil rights work, despite the fact they didn't live to fulfill the most important steps towards equality. They were leaders who made the tough choice and led the country in the right direction.

When Bush was first elected, RepubliCons held a majority in Congress; despite that fact, he was unable to get the bill passed that he campaigned the hardest on, which was the privatization of Social Security.
When Obama was elected, he had a majority of Democrats in Congress, and he arguably achieved more in 100 DAYS than Kennedy achieved in 1000 days. Plus, he got about half of what he wanted in health care reform.

Obama is just one man and as susceptible to pragmatism, compromise and power politics as any other.
