Makes me sad - my family lived in Memphis when I was ages 5-10 and me and my sisters loved Libertyland. So many great memories, so tragic to see it gone. Now that this and the ice skating rink in the Mall of Memphis are both gone, there's not much of my childhood stomping grounds left out there.
Also, I remember it's the only theme park that let us stay on rides instead of getting back in line again - my big sis went on Revolution at least 8 times in a row once.
I performed at this park in 1983 with the Memphis Blues Brass Band Drum & Bugle Corps, The corps folded that year also, I also went to Libertyland the first year it opened, Memphis was going down hill by the mid 90's and it was no stopping it, I remember when Southland Mall was the big mall in Memphis, now that area is also bad, I now live in New Orleans and it is just as bad...
@markryan1963 it made me scratch my head when I was 16 seeing 3 malls go to shit that have been around for a long time and I'm thinking I've seen other malls in that same radius from the same time period to the early 90's that haven't gone to shit and are not hoody. and I was saying to myself I thought malls are something that always stay successful and never close. hopefully Wolfchase won't be the 4th. someone predicited 04 05 or so it would have gone to shit by 2010. well we'll see after 11
@markryan1963 southland mall still seem to portray that image through their web site to get dumb Elvis Loving tourist Arkies/north miss residents who are clueless or don't care or tourists in general to come to their stores I'm shocked I'm wondering how much shrinkage they experience next to the Wal*mart on Elvis Presley I heard that wally world had the worst shrinkage in the country out of all the Wal*Marts. due to shoplifters maybe crooked employees too idk.
I am happy to say my community is helping to keep a piece of LibertyLand alive. Bay Beach in Green Bay, WI will be the new home of the Zippin Pippin. I'm excited A. that I don't have to drive 5 hours to ride a coaster and B. that part of LibertyLand's legacy will continue. So sad to see something that brought so much happiness to many was left forgotten and unwanted. Beautiful video, thanks!
Wow this brings back lots of memories. I always went three times a year once for a school field trip, once during summer camp, and always went through during Midsouth fair. I miss that place alot I just wish we could open it up for one last summer and hopefully raise enough money to keep it open
its all dirt and trees now. I grew up in liberty land and it was a big part of my childhood. I will mss it and i will never forget all the wonderful memories and friends that i made there.
Libertyland did not close due to financial reasons. It was sucked dry by the retired politicians who ran the Mid-South Fair. Their very own CFO told us about all the unmarked envelopes stuffed full of cash that he found all over the office. Jim Rout has stolen the Time Capsule and would steal candy from a baby if he got the chance. We are still fighting to re-open our PARK!
@kablooie46 Would love to see Libertyland reopened. But with the Zippin Pippin being sold to a park in Green Bay Wisconson, would it be the same ? What would they bring back ? I MISS LIBERTYLAND !
I miss this place. My grandparents took me there every summer when I was younger. I wished it was still open because I wanted to take my husband to the place that I so dearly loved as a kid. Libertyland, you are missed!!
The Pippin apparently gave you a great view of Memphis...I was always to busy screaming ,my eyes closed in FEAR to notice a VIEW..It was then and remains--my definition of PURE JOY.
Wow - as a kid, I spent many weekend days there in the 1950's & early 1960's. I loved the old place and I am sorry to see that it no longer there. My dad and his parents used to go there in the 30's & 40's. I always liked hearing his story of when he rode the Zippin with some teenage friends, & how one of them fell out of the coaster, fell to the ground but was unhurt, as he was totally drunk! It was his favorite ride.
Libertyland did not close because they swithced some rides. They closed due to lack of revenue which was because it was in an unsafe part of town that has been taken over by criminals and that's the reason the Mall of Memphis and Hickory Ridge Mall closed. How long do you think I will take for the Mephis thugs to close Wolf Chase Mall?
I live in eastern Arkansas and Libertyland was just a part of my life. The closing of this park really did suck, bad! The rides were awesome for the most part, but they took out of a few of the classics over the years, like the Himalaya and the Spider and replaced them with unpopular 'contraptions'. I think the switching of good, popular rides contributed to Libertyland's death. I REALLY hope the Zippin Pippin can uphold just standing there with no maintenance or anything! Total Classic.
Libertyland closed to do loss of financial revenue. Like I posted just now in a separate comment, they switched out popular, classical rides with "rock climbing walls" and "inflatables" - yeah, go figure. In the early to mid-90's, this park really was blastin' - went downhill after 1997.
@elvisworldwide The Zippin Pippin was originally constructed in 1912 and moved to the fairgrounds later. Do you realize that it's going to be reassembled in a park out in Green Bay WI ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
liberty land seemed gay and i have 4 sixflags in mi state and ilive in CA and that state has the most amusment parks in the U.S HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHA
I WENT THERE EVERY YEAR i waited a long time to go on a ride now all of my hope to go on that ride is gone i was seven now im 10 nothing is right anymore without liberty land i loved it there i was always going to go there for my birthday if i could i would die there. . . RIP liberty land if only i could re-live that moment. . .:(
Memphis has just gone to the crapper! Mud Island, Libertyland, Fairgrounds, Mall of MEmphis, and you name it. Memphis was a wonderful city and beautiful place back in the 80's. Now, it's just a big pile of crap!
@juliet97 sad thing is cities in Shelby County loose out on certain things over Memphis. like not getting certain amusements malls or biz's approved for that city due to the fears of crime coming in hence loosing out on Revenue for the city that the biz wants to locate in. a reason why the Carriage Crossing sux. and other things don't get approved. I bet things were slated for discussion we just don't know being very minimal interest not making it newsworthy
Bring a six flags the memphis please!!!!!!! Or bring Libertyland back..or build a six flags in Mississippii...there's plenty of room there...They need to build a six flags in every state..
we (my family) would go on me and my brother's birthday and ride every ride. we'd usually take a few friends. god, our city needs to get the financial stuff together quick.
In 1977 I was one of about 20 people who worked the night Elvis came with family, friends and Lisa Marie. I worked as a ride supervisor and was ask to come back to work late that night for a special guest. to run the rides for the special guest. That guest...Elvis. That is one of his last public apperances and I was lucky enough to meet him that night. That is a nite i will never forget..Randy

The Zippin Pippin is one of America's first wood-frame coasters, constructed in 1929.
