My reactions to this speech are mixed. I agree with Obama completely that the US and Africa must work as partners toward a better global future. However, I think in saying that colonialism is over and cannot be blamed for Africa's modern problems, Obama makes two mistakes. First he overlooks the existence of neocolonialism, through which corporations continue what colonists started; second, he ignores the lasting psychological scars of colonization.
The recent economic crisis has caused a lot of suffering for people in the US, but this is nothing compared to its effects in Africa, where a downturn in wall street becomes a life or death issue. Whenever an economic downturn occurs in the first world, its effects are tenfold in the third world. Global inequality has persisted despite the end of colonialism on paper. Perhaps Obama realizes this, but that's unfortunately not the impression I got from his speech
this is true Mr. Prez..those greed mogul leaders in Africa only tried to enriched themselves and close relatives..example Liberia under prez Charles Taylor who destroy the country and use child soldier to destroy their own people! Thank you Prez Obama
President Obama's success a prove to the fact that American values are true and anyone willing to pay the price, can become anything in America. He won the presidency because he prepared for it. It didnt come to him by chance. African Americans should stop making excuses for the path of mediocrity most of them have chosen. After all, the jews were also ex-slaves but to date have remained the most responsible, well educated, productive and hardworking people on earth. Point blank!!!
The earlier African leaders come to terms with hard truth that only them can solve the problems of the continent, the better for Africa. Africa is no doubt one of the most endowed continent on earth. It is an irony that the continent continues to languish in poverty. Only corruption and misguided leadership could explain that. If the west wants to really help Africa, they should withdraw every support and allow African leaders to become responsible. Else, Africa will continue to be dependent.
What he's saying isn't really new or groundbreaking, but I think it was important for him to say it. He has a way for putting things so logically and concisely that his message is easy to understand without being patronizing. I look forward to a future in which Africa provides electricity through solar power for itself and Europe, but that can happen only stable, conflict-free environment.
god is back with us what an inspiring leader he has the charisma and the credibility his personal life and achievements are already a legacy to all those who think things are clothed
Yes you can with hard work and a lot of sacrifices
This Man is Gold. I don't think enough Americans appreciate what they have here. His plain speaking, and above all courageous, communication is a sight to behold. No more excuses Africa - move on.
African Americans have got to take advantage of the opportunities they have in the U.S. African immigrants come to the U.S. and make a good through hard work and education. People who make excuses never go anywhere.
knightmirnij regarding elephants in the room, obama doesn't confront them in the US either. unemployment is in double digits, and in michigan it is at 15%. he has spent more $ then all other presidents combined since 1789 til now. he is bankrupting the US, while making eloquent speeches. he's a big phony.
As a new young African immigrant here in the States the last few lines brought tears to my eyes! Thank you Obama and Ghanian's for setting an example!
President Bush did a lot for Africa, more than most people know so I'm not taking anything away from him when I say - WOW! The first African American President speaking in Africa. So...so...so beyond words.
who cares what color the president is. obama is a horrible president that should spend less time making speeches and spend more time fixing the economy instead of spending away the future of the US children.
omg - how can a man build such a simple, plainspeaking platform of basic, sound common sense. All credit to Obama and to the people and Parliament of Ghana .
I was in ghana at that time. I saw him on the news. There is also called a place calles Ho!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama completely denies that western racism and hegemony has had any negative effect on Africa since the "end" of the colonial era.
Obama tells Africa to stop blaming colonialism for it's problems!
Indeed, how dare the natives use 500 years of imperialism as an excuse for their stunted development?
We will suck the blood out of you and you need to move the fuck on

Confronting the elephants in the room. Great speech.
Still he didn't address the unequal trade policies between the West and Africa. Nor did he address the issues with the IMF/WB.
And African Americans are not doing really "good" in America.
Still a great speech. He surprises me everytime.
