I think that was invented by the American distributor to increase its commercial potential. Personally, I like the film's original title Space Amoeba better.

I saw this at 17 years of age, wired to the gills on LSD in 1971 at the Paramount Theater in Cheyenne, Wyoming. My friend Rob Spaulding and I laughed so hard we almost got thrown out of the theater. The acid made the special effects seem 3-D state-of-the-art even though it was a schlock film. You had to make your own fun in that backward high plains town, and did we ever!
