Also, I wonder if he got the officer's written consent to use his image for this publication. While there is no expectation of privacy, if the photographer seeks to publish the officer's image (particularly if he seeks to do so for profit or to hold the person in a bad light) there may be privacy issues involved.

The guard was just doing his job, and he did it well. We all know that security at federal buildings are going to confront someone if they see him photographing the buildings. As long as they are not abusive, I see nothing wrong with that. It is a shame that it has come to that, but that's the way it is. It would have been enough for the officer to ask, "Hey what are you doing out here?" "Do you have any hostile intent?" ...and then turn around and go back to his post. By standing there....with his gun and his uniform....and staring at the person he was done questioning, he was officially harrassing him for no good reason. It was harrassment. Unlawful.

But you know what I have better things to do. I'm out actually taking photos rather than pretending to in order to instigate a security guard and make a video of it. Believe me there's not a single person that would get me to lay down like a dog I guarantee you that so don't make those assumptions. We have rights.

If you were handholding there is no way you got a decent photograph. Sounded like the shutter was close to 1" and you were just taking pictures to rub it in. Why not just say, "I'm a night time photographer that does this for enjoyment. Thanks for stopping and checking into what I'm doing. My name is "firstname" nice to meet you. Can I be on my way now?"

Sad to see that officer's demeanor change from "I have to check you out because it's part of my job; maybe we can have a nice conversation" to being disappointed in your attitude. He might not be inclined to treat the next photographer as warmly after you projected your problems onto him.
If you have any grace or decency, you should go back and apologize to him for treating him like an anonymous thorn in your side. Cultivating positive contacts often pays off in the end for photographers.

That cop was polite and respectful 100% of the time and YOU give photographers a bad name. I don't know about the title used here. I think this officer is extremely (and exceptionally) professional and there's no "harassment" involved. The problem is the policies he's asked to carry out and, frankly, he knows the law better than 99% of law enforcement. IMO, this video works AGAINST the issue of photographers rights.

He's investigating him, which is great and understandable since he could be a potential threat. Man I wish they had done the same thing and exhude that much competence and composure after 9/11. That would have greatly helped determine who are the real "terrorists".

@machintruc313: It is almost always legal to take photographs of things in public. A person should not have to explain himself to anyone for something he may potentially do.
Police in the U.S. do not have the authority to demand that a person explain his actions. He doesn't even have the authority to know who he is talking with unless he has a reasonable suspicion that a crime is being or has been committed.

Timothy McVeigh looked nothing like Osama BinLaden....looked like a regular guy, and he was in the Army for god's sake...it could be anyone, even this jerk. In case you missed it, an American "citizen" was arrested today after a FBI investigation, where he is accused of planning to fly explosive laden drone aircraft into federal buildings. Confiscated from him were several pics of the Pentagon. Lets hear it for all them freedom fighting photographers!!!!!

For real the officers can say up to NINE different things you didn't do and haul your ass off. I think you have a PEACE officer here, but don't push it. I think this is the first time I have seen someone in that federal officers position act calmly and intelligently. No false demands, or made up reasons why he would have to give up his I.D., and seemed to be well educated in the laws of photographers. Just did his job, and did it well if you ask me.

You were a little bit combative & he was professional and kept his cool the whole time.I was glad to see you stand up for the Bill of Rights.You should be free to record anything and/or anyone in public if the police can do it with dash cams then we all should have that same freedom. Only corrupt/dirty cops want to hide from the camera. If they are doing a good job video just backs them up if a problem does happen.
