  • Can you inform me who the man is in this film listening to the song, I seem to think I know his face from other films

  • @twozero201 Charles Winninger - he plays her father in 3 different films

  • God, I am in tears everytime I hear her sing this. She holds the standard for this song!

  • Thanks to my mama,I got to know her..... Deanna is TRULY one of God's Angels sent to earth...!!! Looking at her and singing with such "Ease"....She MUST be an angel!!!! and thank you mama although you're in heaven, and hopefully singing yourself? Thank you for telling me about One of your Big faves.. DEANNA DURBIN!

  • This is one of many videos I have uploaded that has been subjected to a phony copyright claim by "Orchard Music". This is a public domain recording. Please do not click on any links below the video. This criminal conduct by Orchard Music should not be rewarded.

  • I thought this song was from 'Capitalism: A Love Story'.

  • wonderful is the only way to describe such a glorious voice there can be no comparision between her and the yowling so called singers to day

    Gordon

  • my grandfathers favourite song and singer.. wounded at Arras on the Somme

he lost many friends on that day.. as did we all.

Deanna is or was something else tho... seems the world loved her then.. we have no one now to come close

  • Just beautiful - there are no words to describe.

  • I can remember sitting next to the radio, enchanted by this song as a child of 4 or 5 and that was 70 years ago. It enchants me still!

  • Этот божественный голос не может оставлять равнодушным!

  • Truly a heart rendingly beautiful song

  • The mystery of perfect tone in music by such a beautiful voice, to move the soul even to tears, is sublime. Thank you Deanna Durbin

  • awesome

  • Beautiful version of this gorgeous Victorian standard...

  • it's just so effortless....gah! im jealous.

  • This is one of the last songs my Father heard before he died in Hospital whilst i held his hand for the last time. This song makes me cry and i lover her too just like my dad. I didn't know who she was but i remember him saying to me that this qwas his favourite singer

  • @blonde7000

Your dad left good rose in your heart, I think.

  • Splendid!

  • Beautifully used by Michael Moore in "Capitalism: A Love Story"

  • ...left blooming alone...

    sigh.

  • Wonderful.

  • Virtually all of Deanna's music brings a tear to my eye or a smile to my face and usually both. She is a once in a millenium gift from God. Singers of our generation should aspire to achieve Deanna's level but in never reaching it should not feel lessened by the effort but satisfied that they gave it their all. Who could expect any other result when they've heard this heavenly voice. Deanna, thank you for what you've given us. I'll look forward to hearing you again when we're all called home.

  • Takes your breath away - thanks for sharing...

  • Seventeen years old and already light years beyond the reach of any singer who will ever live. There's no word for her. The best I can do is weep the words, 'simply astonishing.'

  • A classic Celtic tune, not heard that often, and deanna's version here is really fine.

  • Makes me cry, it is so beautiful and perfect.

  • She is so beautiful and her voice is so lovely. It is a true joy to hear and see such beauty. Deanna Durbin always melts the moments spent listening to her wonderful voice.

  • TIMELESS ~ AWESOME ~ THANK YOU ~:)~

  • Beautiful, a wonderful God given voice.

  • not keen .not to my tast in music ,sorry dad

  • @MrScothern1 you'll coe back to it later, at the latest when your dad is dead and gone! Mark my words!

  • You are very welcome my friend. Yours is tops Well...I had just started to make a DVD movie of Lily Pons which I recorded while I was asleep via the computer here. As I listened to Lily sing I was reminded again as so many times before-there's no one like Edna Mae-aka Deanna Durbin. As I listened to Lily sing The Last Rose Of Summer, I thought-well...here is YET another good one no doubt-Jane Powell-sound alike etc .Ho hum.. I have tried my best to find someone better than DD--I just can't.

  • You can trot alllllllllllllll the singers in this world out here for a comparison to Deanna Durbin, and NONE compare to her....NONE! "A spiritual experience'' is the best description I've heard yet..YES! And as I've said before, she could act! I do hope someone connected to her will read to her what she is thought of before she dies. I just wonder if she will ever know...I hope so. Flowers are so much better appreciated when we are alive to smell their Godly fragrance. Her voice was Godly

  • @WACOAGENTS Thanks Waco! I enjoy your channel as well, including some terrific Deanna Durbin clips! I don't know if she appreciates her newfound fame on Youtube or not. When she left the business, she truly wanted to become "a nobody". Still, I wish she could have handled her personal and professional lives a bit better - hers was a gift meant to be shared. She gave us a dozen good years, but I'd prefer that she had done more!

  • @WACOAGENTS Religious fundamentalism becomes not a better thing if the divinity is a singer. You may pilgrimage on your knees to france, but what makes it so important for you to put all other great singing ladies on the second row - even June Bronhill, Roisin O'Reilly, Maureen Hegarty, Eileen Farrell ... ?

  • @WACOAGENTS . Great observation. You are 100% correct.

  • At the time, DD's youthful innocence and beauty allied to a wonderful voice made her top notch property, but in truth - very talented though she was - there were dozens of equally or more talented sopranos at that time. It was a time of plenty, when many communities effectively trained young talent through church or chapel or choir. But there is something magical about the 'compete package' this young performer delivers.

  • thank you so much for sending me this lovely video, such a beautiful voice ,so pure and sweet, one of the past great singers. I just love this song .god bless

  • Very Very nice thank you Country Irish for sending to me

  • @CountrynIrish,nice one and she sang so sweet , over 50 years on it is good ,thanks John for the share ,Christie

  • Comfort your lonely old & try to be like those other roses they miss. TY & sorry, Grandma Jean.

  • Flawless!!

  • Beautiful Version ! Love it ! She was a wonderful singer, and she sings it with so much feeling, it's just perfection ! Great Video ! Thank you very much for uploading ! 5*****+

  • This song is so sad

  • Believe it or not Deanna can still sing like this!!!

  • @reidb18 How would you know, she dropped off the map and lives somewhere in France outside Paris and I have not heard of her coming out. It's too bad, she was one of the greatest talents of the last 100 years. She is still loved.

  • beautiful

  • she looks like judy garland

  • Heavenly. Ponselle and her have given the two most vibrant and shimmering versions of this song I've ever heard.

  • Beautiful Song ! Love it ! The best version ! Her voice is just wonderful, and she puts so much emotion into the song ! Thank you so much for uploading this marvelous video ! 5*****+

  • Her version's the best so far.

  • I have heard many others sing this song but none like Deanna Durbin, lovely voice and lovely song

  • When you hear this, you know that something sweet and precious has been lost in the world today

  • My father's parents house would have been much like this in the 1930's and 40's and my father's singing was second to none!...(I hope to get the tapes put on disc soon to upload) but his father was dissappointed he wanted to be a singer!

I guess the moral is...give you children good morals...encourage a good heart in them...and let them go!!

  • Wow, just.....wow!

  • Fantastic!

  • Hearing such a song is a spiritual experience. Deanna's flawless voice is pure beauty. Sadly, how low we have sunk in popular music today. Artistry, nuance, subtlety, ...where have they gone? Today we have Lady Gaga and a multitude of other harsh, loud but talentless computer generated noise, barbaric and devoid of any noble impulse. A few decades ago we had Simon and Garfunkel, and many other popular groups that still composed real music. That has vanished, at least as far as I can see.

  • @copernicus633 I agree whole-heartedly with every word you wrote.

  • @copernicus633 This is a beautiful song, and Deanna Durbin sings it exquisitely. There is still beauty today - we do have Renee Fleming, Elina Garanca, Sondra Radvanovsky, etc. - but it's not in popular music. It is sad.

  • Lovely!

  • How poignant those words are given that Deanna really is one of the last of the great singers from that era.

  • jasmyntje3

Wat een prachtige stem, werd er stil van zo mooi en al zo lang geleden!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lovely song, lovely lyrics, lovely voice and singing. Thx Dennis.

  • Es una voz maravillosa, jamás nadie ha cantado esto con la dulzura y la maestría De D. Durbin

  • aaawww how beautiful this statment is, truley proving the gift of music & talent she has, is still apperent today after all these years, Bless ya & I hope you found love & happiness in your heart...

  • It's a shame there isn't a version of her singing all of the lyrics. She sounds Beautiful! :(

  • What beauty in every way. There is hardly any point in describing it. I wonder if anyone would agree with when i say that her voice reminds me a little of Rosa Ponselle's, another fabulous singer. I think the "timbre" and sound are similar.

  • My darling departed dad loved her and I can see and hear why.

  • This music is full of love and heart . Comments are not necessary . And the one who loves the music , he { she / will always find . You do not need full HD picture , 3D , 5+1 dolby surround ... full of nothing inside. Deanna shows you more, much more.

  • beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice.

  • The beauty of this is almost overwhelming.Thank you for posting this

  • SHE HAD THE BEAUTY THE VOICE AND THE HEART TO BE WAS SHE WAS THE BEST ACTRICE AND SINGER OF THE 30th!!!!

  • @violinthief Jackie Cooper...remember him from "Treasure Island?"

  • Besides Deanna Durbin, can anyone name four well known movie stars from the 1930's who are still a live? Deanna was a rare talent. So were, or are, the four still living.

  • Beautiful voice! I had heard of her but this is the first time I have actually heard her voice. Thanks so much for submitting this.

  • beautiful, so perfect

  • Easily a phenom- a prodigy- on the highest clouds of human accomplishment- Mz Durbin is my new favorite singer- (2nd maybe)- what a shame she tossed in the towel 60 years ago-but Hollywood will make anybody nuts-

  • I have an old L.P. of Deanna and this is just one of the songs on it that makes me teary eyed. What a voice!

  • One of the few songs & singers that bring tears to my eyes no matter how much I endeavour to control my response.

  • Well done Deanna. You hit those notes with no effort.

  • Deanna is an adorable angel!

  • shes adoreble! I can see a resemblance to a very young and innocent Judy Garland(not so much in looks but in character).

    Good stuff.

  • she is one of the best, i have ever heard. superb voice..

  • A most charming rendition. What a talent this girl was.

  • what book is that neilmark?

She is but just a dream you cannot be as beautiful as her

    Bonnie Lassie!!!!

  • wow....brings tears to my eyes, beautiful.

  • Her singing voice was fantastic :D

  • Since the first time I saw her on black and white television when I was a child, Deanna Durbin has been my favorite in this genre of ageless music. Wherever you are now, Deanna, just want you to know how much you are loved by one of your fans in Canada! Evy

  • This is really out of this world. Ms Deanna should be remembered .

  • Christmas 2009. . . listening to Deanna Durbin . . puts all reality talent show's into context. . . not even close.. . God Bless you Deanna . . will meet you on the other side. Mike

  • Deanna is still going strong at 88, although she retired from the big time 62 years ago.

  • Deanna sounds so beautiful singing this! It makes me feel good just listening. She also looks so beautiful while singing. I could not think of a better way to spend two minutes. Compared to Joan Sutherland's version of "Last Rose of Summer" this is much more beautiful. I am not into the breathing details, just how my heart feels when the singing is finished. Deanna warms it up quite nice with this song.

  • My parents said that her voice inspired many Australians in those dark days of World War II especially when she sang the Rose of No Man's Land.

  • Iths not beutefull ... iths unforgotten

  • a really beutifull voice

  • So stunning to listin to and watch!

  • Edna Mae Durbin / Deanna Durbin Top 3 Female voices that have ever recorded

The last Rose of summer, thats what I think anyway.

  • I have a 78rpm record of this song. Very nice to see video footage of the song.

  • Aboslutely superb. Listen to some of the opera singer versions - then come back to this. Sung from the heart with flawless technique - tone, pitch, phrasing, breathing all spot on. Would prefer a slightly faster tempo - but who can argue with perfection?

  • @neilmak I just listened to Joan Sutherland and Rita Streich sing this at your suggestion. They sing it in a higher key, but with the same flawless technique, and even better breathing. That is not to say that DD doesn't sing it beautifully, however. But I find Sutherland even more expressive than Durbin here. For instance, listen to when Durbin holds the high note....she just sits on it, it goes nowhere. Sutherland's is more musical.

  • comparisions are odious when comparing this fine voice. it would suit you better to occupy your self by reading a good book.the title i leave to your expert opinion LOL

  • Sorry if these comments are over your head Happy. Maybe you should go and read that book, if you can read, that is...

  • @RossiniSoprano: Rita Streich is my number two. Sutherland's diction is unclear. Yes, she has the fabulous voice, and the emotion - but the clarity is missing. The words are critical here, they carry the message.

I like the simplicity of Durbin. Her voice is unforced and natural, and you get every word of the lyrics, with full impact.

But, hey - it's all just opinion. You go with Sutherland - I'll stick with Durbin. A pleasure to hear from somebody who knows something. Merry Xmas.

  • This is a good observation. Why Durbin tops my list is exactly because she doesn't play around on that high note, she just sings it.

  • @neilmak I absolutely agree. Very simple, very pure, extremely well done. I recently listened to Renee Fleming sing her version and even though I love her voice, it cannot compare with Deanna's rendition. I do, however, like Rita Streich's version which is very light and pure.

  • @keydet72 Unfortunately the Victoria de los Ángeles version has been taken down, but I think you would enjoy that too if you can find it anywhere.

  • Soooo beautiful... hop someday have the half part of this beauty

  • I'm Japanese. We have the same song ,but original song is the best. I wonna be a man in this film. Thank you very very much. m(, ,)m ありがとうございます。

  • She had an amazing voice.

    How old was she here?

  • I have to sing this in choir, three parts are better... but still, this has it's charm :D

  • This is the first time I hear her voice. Beautiful, very touching.

  • I love her voice :)

  • I was actually named after her.... this is the first time ive ever thought to look up her up or heard her sing... and its eerie the lyrics feel very close to home.

  • wow!...:)

  • Absolutely beautiful! Sitting, standing, 'lip synching,' or whatever - she simply has a wonderful and haunting voice! Wish this sort of talent was celebrated today.

  • One of the best versions in recording history!!!

  • i would say that what we heard was her real voice but i was deff a recording put in later. she is an AMAZING singer but i don't know of anyone who can sing that so slowly and with so much power while siting like that in a chair. to sit normaly is one thing, but to slouch like that is another. no way what you heard was her singing it right then. it was a recording put in later. but still very good!!!! beautiful!! :)

  • My GGGfather was Thomas Moore. I only found out recently that he wrote this song which has always been a favourite for many years. Thanks mate.HF Australia

  • Ah, unabashedly emotional or even sentimental. That's the way these songs should be performed.

  • I adore Deanna Durbin and grew up listening to her beautiful voice. She is the reason I wanted to become an opera singer. Thanks so much for posting this!

  • wow!

  • thanks for the correction violinthief, keep posting, we enjoy them immensely.

  • just beautiful

  • Her voice is so sweet. I think that's perfect word for it. It's amazing that she was able to pull off this song at such a painfully slow tempo. Nearly any other singer would have had me bored by the end of it, but Durbin never fails to amaze. Thanks for uploading!

  • this was one of most gifted of the hollywood crowd, to bad we don't have singers like this today, instead of those garbage mouths

  • @404wtrdst She was of course Canadian, and moved to America after winning a singing competition. Nowadays all it takes is a sex tape to come to the attention of Hollywood. How things have changed.

  • I never knew she had recorded this.

My favorite piece from the opera Martha.

Thank You for posting this beautiful video

  • She has such a beautiful voice. I love her singing this song. The sound is so pure.

  • Superb classic - Gene

  • Her voice, her face, her musicality, her diction, her sweetness... AMAZING!

    Thank you for sharing.

  • I fell in love with Deanna Durbin in 1937, she was 13 and I was 14, when she appeared in her first short movie with Judy Garland. I still love her - but froom afar.

  • You're eighty five?! That's amazing!!! (as in someone as "old" as you is using a computer)

  • no, beth he's 88, and i'm sure you meant that as a compliment

  • so sorry i missed the thumbs up and done a thumbs down. god bless you friend a man of your age have seen a lot and iam sure done a lot and its good to hear from you

  • @jimmytom1 I had a brief encounter with her a few years back, she now lives in France aged 88 I believe. She seems to have disappeared from the public eye the most recent picture I've seen of her is taken back in the 1980's the one she sent to some magazine because of rumors she had gained weight.

  • @jimmytom1 aaawww how beautiful this statment is, truley proving the gift of music & talent she has, is still apperent today after all these years, Bless ya & I hope you found love & happiness in your heart...

  • @jimmytom1 wrong,,, in 1937 deanna was 16 years old.. she was born 1921

  • @aaktow Did you have to be so terse in your reply? The man was 85 when he wrote his post. I'm a lot younger and get things mixed up.....are you the one person who never makes a mistake??

  • Now that is a beautiful voice! She also seems to enjoy singing this song very much.

  • Beautiful!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this ... Deanna moves me to tears each time I play it ...

  • what year is this from

  • Absolutely amazing, the magnificent sound she can produce even sitting down. Flawless, simply flawless, hearing her makes me wish that I was born during that golden age so I could appreciate it first hand.

  • probably not really recorded while seated. deanna's lip-synching, which is how h'wood presents singing on camera, with the actual recording done off-camera and mixed in later

  • To patthecatman ...You can clearly see her hands and abdomen moving while she is singing this tune. SHe is definitely singing. You can argue if the voice was dubbed over aftward but she is singing for sure. Not lip syncing

  • hairsplitting. lip synching is more or less exactly that: singing on the set along with a recording of the track, and that same recording of the track being dubbed in later. in other words, of COURSE she is "really singing" but that does NOT mean that this is not an example of "lip syncing".

  • my Grandfathers favourite song and singer, he was wounded during ww1.... he lost all his friends at the time, at Arras in France the Somme... brings a tear to my eye its Beutifull so Beutifull

  • Deanna Durbin may have sung this number in a movie, but it is from an opera titled "Martha". With her singing and acting ability, what she could have done on the opera stage had she chosen to concentrate on a career in opera!I can imagine her doing the "ina" roles in Mozart's operas then stepping up from there as the lead diva in "Traviata. "Boheme" or " Manon Lescaut".Or Gilda in "Rigoletto". Since she's only in movies and YouTube:-) where can I get some of her movies?

    Operabuff1935

  • The poem was written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. A few years later, John Stevenson set it to music. Flotow included it in his "Martha", but he did not compose it.

  • @violinthief Flotow stole the tune - not Thomas Moore's incidentally, but Sir John Stevenson -but not the words.

  • @violinthief Thanks for Pointing That Out !! - The next Two Verses.. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one! To pine on the stem; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go, sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter, Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead. So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, From Love's shining circle The gems drop away. When true hearts lie withered And fond ones are flown, Oh! who would inhabit, This bleak world alone?
  • So so so beautiful. Thanks.

  • Beautiful song from a beautiful Lady!

    Many thanks for posting.

  • In the film "The Great Caruso" Mario Lanza sings this and dies on stage........also a great version of this song

  • Had to listen to this one again.

Deanna Durbin, wherever you are, your fans

will love you forever. God bless you and your loved ones.

    With love from Canada,

    Evy

  • Ditto. With love from NY, USA.

    Linda

  • She's the best!

  • Years ago, I saw the movie on TV.

Deanna Durbin is still my favourite female artist. Beautiful lady. Beautiful song!

  • Her voice is perfect!

  • I'm having my hair done modelled after her hairdo for my prom. Yeah, I have different tastes than the kids at school.

  • Aah, my sister did her best lol. Looked nice though, and I look freakishly tall in all of the pictures lol.

  • I thought she had cute hair in this movie. Rock on!

  • Good for you!

  • Love this song and the movie Three Smart Girls Grow Up...she has the most beautiful voice.

  • The best rendition of all time!!!

  • I am so glad I am a sub. of yours! These are classics I would never see otherwise. Mahalo!
