I gotta say, I was let down by this film a little bit, but I'm not completely sure why. Maybe I'll need to watch it a second time with a different perspective, or it'll make more sense to me if I see Lady Vengeance (which I haven't yet). Still, Park Chan-wook is a genius.
ok one more comment.. the photo that came with the ransom.. he got the little girl to cry by NOT giving her the necklace, then he snapped a photo.. yet, the photo has the little girl crying WITH the necklace on.. yes, i know, he could've taken it right after he gave her the necklace, but, did this bother anyone else? it's just.. kind of a key point in the movie.. argg

I've seen this one yesterday, and most likely one of the best movies i've seen in a long time. I agree on the most comments here, i'm done with the all american blockbuster movies and i'm trying to pay some more attention to the independent movies. You should watch Memories of Murder.. greatest movie of all times!
@Raider577 Lol, yes there is quite abit of rapping. The 'actors' who are real street kids in singapore play themselves in the film and the film is based upon their lives as street kids. They have no family, no education etc and so therefore are in gangs and commit crime. One kid never turned up for filming one day because he got arrested for stabbing another kid outside mcdonalds. Some parts dont even have a script because the director told them to talk about what they normally talk about.
@arteddie Oh that's interesting. I didn't know they had street gangs in Singapore. I know laws are quite strict for discipline there. I will try to watch the film if I can find somewhere to get it.
@Raider577 Yeah the Singaporean govenment tried to hide the fact that they had street gangs, because it gave Singapore a bad name, hence why the film was made to highlight the side of Singapore that people ignore. The film was banned in Singapore, but was released in a few cinemas there after 27 cuts were taken to it. The UK DVD i have has no cuts though. I got the film from HMV
this movie is simply incredible... ive officially given up hollywood-crap movies. recently ive been watching only japanese, korean, indian, german, french, chinese etc. (basically, not american) produced movies and ive been awestruck at just how enlightening and honest they can be. well done.

Sorry but the Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance was crap IMO. I cannot even compare it to the masterpiece the Old Boy was, nor the thrilling scenario of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Thats just me thought....

WOW - even if I watched the 1st hour some time ago, and the 2nd hour just now - I got to say this was one fantastic movie. To me it seemed much more emotional than OldBoy or Lady Vengeance. OldBoy or Lady Vengeance to me seemed a bit more what can I say - I guess more of a thrill.
But this - jeese quite depressing. ENDING WAS HILARIOUS THOUGH!
Warner Bros. are going to remake this movie.....sad. Let's just hope that an excellent director will find this and understand the meaning and emotion to it in order to save the remake from failure :/

It's really hard to find a DVD of this genius movie, at least in my country, austria. So I ordered it from, I can't remember, but I nearly paid the twice, because it's so rare!

Now that I look back I know that I made the mistake of watching it after Oldboy. I felt like it had to be like Oldboy or better. If you're going with that set of mind you're gonna hate it or find it very boring. The other 2 are more stylistic. They grab you by the eyes and then give a kick in the stomach. This one is more realistic and for that, is much more disturbing. It really makes you feel like shit in the end because even being the goreiest it's the more meaningful and thought-provocking.
When I watched Oldboy in 2003, I imeadiately felt like I needed to see this one. When I actually saw it, I stoped at half of the movie because honestly I couldnt take it hiw slow it was going. 2 years later I saw Lady Vengeance and like Oldboy (though not as good) I thought it was awesome. Last year (5 years later) I picked again this one and I saw it from start to finish. Today this is my favourite of the 3. And I think that's the thing. You need to let it "simmer" and "simmer" yourself.
Long movie. It was ok compared to lady vengeance. But then again, it was park chan's early work. Its one of those movies that you have to make yourself watch, it didnt really keep me on my toes.

That's true. Btw, nicholas cage is a horrible actor. lol. Im just a movie buff, especially for drama, thrillers and horror. My expectation for this movie was really high since it was park chan wook, who is one of my favs, but it was a very slow movie. I was kind of disappointed. Good plot but the flow of it was very slow. He's known for his suspense but I just didn't see it or feel it. I was interested but wasn't in total shock like in lady vengeance . I felt bad for the deaf guy though.
as a movie buff my self i like every gnre i own over 200 000 movies and ive watched every one i believe that you have to watch all genres in order to truly understand the difference between the directors and writers producers different views of life every movie can teach you something now talking about thinking in a movie i like movies light saw not because of gore but because the end shocks you and i like films that make you think because its healthy for the brain

This movie is phenominal. I have no words for Chan Wook Park's work that have not been said. Total visual poetry. This, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance are all the most tragic cinema I have ever seen. 10,000 out of 10. I can't wait for Thirst.
I agree, i personally found this on the most captivating. Unlike the others he shows more than ever that revenge is a sad act, not a coragous one. My favorite scene is when he's standing on the beach, while the little girl in the background is playing near the water, as she begins to drown we see no exprestion on his face, and we want more than ever for him to realize what is happening, turn around and save the girl. But because of his handicap he is unable to.

Lady Vengeance is about redemption and salvation.

Have you watched the "fourth" one on the anthology 3 Extremes...it's pretty good. I think Oldboy is the worse of them myself and I saw it first.

Long movie. It was ok compared to lady vengeance. But then again, it was park chan's early work. Its one of those movies that you have to make yourself watch, it didnt really keep me on my toes.

Um, well, I wasn't really trying to be a "jerk", per se, but I am getting sick of all the kids/people these days who refuse to actually pay attention, and/or let a movie make them think. (I'm not saying you're like that, but your comment certainly made it seem that way.)
It seems like these days, if movies don't involve Nicholas Cage and some busty woman, explosions, and ridiculous plots about searching the center of the earth for Einstein's bottled piss, people just aren't interesed.

That's true. Btw, nicholas cage is a horrible actor. lol. Im just a movie buff, especially for drama, thrillers and horror. My expectation for this movie was really high since it was park chan wook, who is one of my favs, but it was a very slow movie. I was kind of disappointed. Good plot but the flow of it was very slow. He's known for his suspense but I just didn't see it or feel it. I was interested but wasn't in total shock like in lady vengeance . I felt bad for the deaf guy though.

as a movie buff my self i like every gnre i own over 200 000 movies and ive watched every one i believe that you have to watch all genres in order to truly understand the difference between the directors and writers producers different views of life every movie can teach you something now talking about thinking in a movie i like movies light saw not because of gore but because the end shocks you and i like films that make you think because its healthy for the brain

This movie is phenominal. I have no words for Chan Wook Park's work that have not been said. Total visual poetry. This, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance are all the most tragic cinema I have ever seen. 10,000 out of 10. I can't wait for Thirst.

I agree, i personally found this on the most captivating. Unlike the others he shows more than ever that revenge is a sad act, not a coragous one. My favorite scene is when he's standing on the beach, while the little girl in the background is playing near the water, as she begins to drown we see no exprestion on his face, and we want more than ever for him to realize what is happening, turn around and save the girl. But because of his handicap he is unable to.
