Sports aren't about getting paid millions of dollars to run a football every week. Its about fighting for the game you love and doing whatever it takes to win. This movie is the perfect example of what sports are all about.
@dickin585 There were black players on the Muncie Central team. The truth is that all teh players on the Milan team '54 were white and from the country. Most of the black players were city kids. Oscar Robertson was very upset that this film was not about his Crispus Attucks team which was all black. Oscar was maybe the greatest player in basketball history with around 150 triple doubles in the NBA. However, this film was about the mania around a small school beating a big school,BobbyPlump
I like how the coach says, get the ball to jimmy and everyone get out of the way. Right after that, the players put their hands together and say "TEAM." LOL
@bodhi3323 No he said "spread the floor" to stretch the D and limit the chance that more than one player would key on Jimmy because they'd have to cover the others to prevent an open shot. Big difference.
My goodness. Greatest sports movie ending EVER! When Gene Hackman stares at Barbara Hershey, what magic, what an acting performance. It has a double meaning, yes he stares up at her because they probably have fallen for each other but there is one other meaning imo. When he came prancing into town Barbara's character was not supportive of Coach Dale initially so this was also an I proved you wrong glance. If there was another roll Hackman should have won best actor for this was the one.
@bigdbc And I think Barabra sells that second meaning well imo. When that smile changes to a more amazed look, I think she then realizes while looking at Gene, that she was wrong and was proud of what Coach Dale had accomplished and did for these young kids and for the town..
@bigdbc Minutia or not it isnt right to decieve the public for something that is supposed to be a reality and an inspiration then use fake stuff...they should have added electronic billboard advertising on the gym walls as well as a 40 foot jumbo tron for the people sitting in the top rows so they could see better
@letsplaycards40 Well I am not hung up on it and 99% of the people who have seen this movie aren't either. They just remember the incredible story and superb acting and that's really all that matters.
@MrGrevy only if you're a retard who thinks that an underdog beating a favorite somehow equals racism. "racism" means that races have different value; ie that some races are superior to others. so, I ask, what part of this movie suggests that one race is superior to another? where in this movie does it state that we should cheer for one team "because they're white?" It never does. the bottom line is that a bunch of poor as shit kids from a tiny ass town won it all. and that's beautiful.
@dweebieMC It's obviously showing that whites are superior, otherwise how would they have been able to defeat the negro team? The negroes were obviously vastly superior in every way, yet the whites won. Sounds pretty racist to me.
@Gman1522 No, Hitler, you don't run this site and if you can't debate or argue, YOU need to get out. You obviously have nothing to say and if you can't keep up, please rid us of your disgusting presence.
The movie went crap for me when #43 managed to weasel his way back on the team with no fan fare. He was talking crap with buddy and walked in the beginning, and after the town hall meeting he decides to take his talents to hickory! talk about riding the gravy train! Merle, jimmy, ollie, strap, ray, buddy, and everett you 7 are the hoosiers and you #43 will always be the imposter!
The only thing that would have made this movie EVEN better if at the end some reporter said "Hey Jimmy, you just made the game winning shot! Now, what are you going to do?"
I love this movie, but I hate hate hate watching this final scene with anybody even in the house. Same is true for last scene of Rudy, the speech in Brian's Song, the re-entry scene of Apollo 13, and the ending of Marley & Me. Damn its so hard to fight back the tears. It gets all uncomfortable if you are with other men. And God forbid you tear up around a woman, she'll keep asking you about your feelings or what your thinking. I just want to yell "Shut up bitch I'll handle this shit on my own!"
@TG1212able Wow you sound horribly repressed. Hope you figure yourself out before your rage overflows. It's ok to have feelings - it doesn't mean you're a "homo" or anything like that. It's not the 1800's - welcome to the 21st century my emotionally retarded friend!
@MrGrevy - I have feelings and don't deny them. They are my feelings, and its up to me to decide who I share them with and how. Only a politically correct cunt like yourself would pass judgment on that. You are no better than the 1800s people whose approach to emotions you accuse me of having. Fucking piece of shit.
@TG1212able Sounds like you and 6 others have issues with your emotions. It's cool, just tell that bitch to shut up one more time to reassure yourself you have balls.
I agree. One of the things people often don't notice is how the music enhances that final scene. Jerry Goldsmith was one of the best film composers ever, and this final scene shows why.
definitely the best motivational inspirational basketball movie of all time! the truth doesnt lie and these white boys from a mini school in indiana got it done like anyone can if they put it all on the line and play as a team. It always brings tears to my eyes!
I was at the original 'hoosiers' gym a few years back.It send chills down my spine. The caretaker there was nice enough to give me a tour of gym and lockeroom.
When Butler took the last shot in last year's NCAA's, I said to myself, "Gene Hackman must be in the stands." That was a wild game and so close to this it was unbelievable.
Does anyone know how true the huddle scene is? I'm not trying to be a d-bag, just wondering because if he really did say that; To be able to look at your teammates and coach with the state championship on the line, is just incredible. Anyway i agree best sports movie ever.
I wish this would have happened to my Butler Bulldogs against Duke. I wish that last shot by Hayward had gone in. There would have been a Hoosiers 2 if that shot went in. Oh well there is always this year. Go Bulldogs!!!
I love this film. It is so inspirational. Allow me two small quibbles, however.
1) in the last huddle you can see the US flag hanging on the gym wall. It is hanging backwards with the field on the right. People in Indiana know how to display a flag with the field on the left. 2) the winning shot is a jump shot. In 1952 even the pros weren't using jump shots - it was all set shots. jump shots came later. Those are absolutely the only complains i could have.
I couldn't agree more livingisaight... You know i just wish high school's would fill there guy's more then they used too... I"m a Anderson high school grad... i grad in 03 and i remember back in the 90's they would sell out and now you can't get hardly anybody in the gym's in these high schools The wig wam is something like a butler field house it's got alot of history we are a 4A class in the N.C.C check out the Anderson High School Indian dance it's pretty awesome
Respond to this video... the amazing thing about this movie is the fact that none of these players are actors they are all just basketball players my dad used to play with all the guys from south bend at the YMCA and last Monday my dad saw jimmy chittwood at Cvs and took apic of him he jus played at Franklin college
Also, I went to college at Taylor University with the kid that plays the religious dude praying all the time. The announcer you hear is Hilliard Gates who was a legendary basketball announcer in INdiana. As of the 1990's, something like 17 of the largest 20 high school basketball gyms were in Indiana. THe IHSAA ruined high school ball in Indiana when we went to class basketball. THe Term "FINAL FOUR" originated in Indiana to describe the last four teams. THE NCAA copied it from INdiana.
This scene was filmed at Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler University. I have witnessed several high school semi state games there and it is an incredible place to watch a game. The man that brings Hickory into HInkle when the overhead door is rolled up is Ray Craft who was on the original Milan team. He was my high school principal before he went to IHSAA as an official.
Hey, question for you guys: If I remember right, in the old VHS version of this scene, when you finally see the shot go in it's a real time clip of Jimmy taking the shot and making it. Anyone know what I'm talking about? And is there any version of the movie out there that still has it? I liked it way better that way.
Can I ask what you are talking about? I do have a VHS tape of it as well the DVDs, but not sure what you are talking about. Please explain more. Thanks!
Well you know how in this version, when you see the shot go in, it's in slow motion? My memory of the other version is that you have the same thing with the repeating clips at different angles of Jimmy jumping to take the shot; but then the last clip of the sequence is Jimmy making his move and taking the shot, in real time speed. Like you were actually watching the game. Does that make sense? Thanks back to you!
This is not just a sports movie,to state the obvious, its about redemption and achieving against all the odds, reminds me of the NATURAL with Redford, similar soundtrack and message, absolutely brilliant acting throughout, one of those movies you are glad you have lived to see,so far away from the thrash coming out these days.
Hoosiers was more entertaining than Milan vs. Muncie Central. I have the DVD of the game from the Indiana High School Athletic Association and it was only 32 to 30 with Milan play LOTS of stall ball.
@enyart91 If you watch the special features on the DVD, you will know that the entire final game was filmed like the true game. So, with your comment, you are actually saying that the real game was worst.
