  • Thanks for this, homestar. I spent 4 hours last night trying to sort this. It might be useful to say that my problem - trying to do a clean format on a laptop with Ubuntu in preparation for a Windows 7 install (it needs NTFS) - was solved by putting GPartition on a USB and using it as a boot drive on the laptop. Worked a treat, but what a hassle! Sorry you Ubuntu fans, but it is a delight to be back on Windows...

  • @hyweltthomas Well, I'll be the first to say Linux isn't for everyone. In fact, since I now use my Youtube channel mostly for video game videos, that requires me to use Windows for the most part. But I am glad you tried out Linux. Now you know it's not for you and there's not a thing wrong with that (:

  • "Error creating moint point: Read-only file system" why?

  • @androiddevelophowto Are you on a live CD? You would have to modify the commands since a CD is read-only.

  • thaaanks God bless you :)

  • dude you're a fucking lifesaver

excuse my language but so many thanks

  • thank you so much.

    God bless you!

  • STOP MOVING THE AROUND THE FREAKING SCREEN!

  • Incredibly well done tutorial. Thank you very much for spending the time to put this video out.

  • hey man thanks ah mill, i had to put my pendrive in my windows computer to fomat it, thanks bro!!......

  • Thank's this video was perfect.

  • man your really a good helper, i hope you live long.

  • Why, the funk, do I have to watch a tutorial and read articles, install stuff and finally use the command line just to format my usb flash? This is one of the things, where windows just beats the crap out of linux, and believe me, I'm no windows fan.

  • Thankyou.

I thought Ubunutu was meant to be linux for humans!

someone should definatly make this easier on ubuntu!!

  • thnx dude

  • hi,

what software did you use to record screen? I searched for one for linux... this one looks good... what is it? 10x

  • gtk-recordmydesktop

  • Very useful, detailed and informative tutorial there!

    thanks a lot!

  • Great! I don't even know there's "GNOME partition editor" and wonder why it is not built-in in Ubuntu. @@

  • Thanks!

  • good information but omg i got a headache coz the camera keeps moving

  • Thanks man!!! Love you!

  • THANK YOU!!! You cant imagine how many frustrated hours I have lived thru when trying to find out how to formate a drive in ubuntu. Because its so easy in windows it has really been annoying. Thanks again, feels like you saved my life or something!

  • what does formatting one do?

  • It completely erases your data, as opposed to simply erasing files, which can still leave little traces. Plus, if you want to change the drive's filesystem, (IE: switch it from FAT16 to FAT32) the only way to do that is to format.

  • How would one format a drive to NTFS? can gnome partition editor do this?

  • Yes. Though I wouldn't advise formatting a flash drive (at least not a 20GB or smaller flash drive) to NTFS. But for a hard drive, sure. There's a whole slew of choices in the menu for different filesystems.

  • THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Nice tutorial. I gave you four stars. Would have been five, but when you move the mouse around in circles, no one can read anything and it's a little nauseating. Be sure to keep that in mind when recording future videos.

  • ya also unless its neccasary i would like to not see that frame.

  • nope it dnt it says u need a fatx as an actual format its the mem card for xbox 360

  • do u no how to format to fatx cause i need to format my usb to fatx to use as memory card for my xbox 360 iv bin lookin every were and all i get is some dumbshit for original xbox and it pisses me off

  • The x in fatx is a variable. Just format to fat32. That should work. If not try fat16, but I'm 99% sure that fat32 will work.

  • het is fat 16 a fatx format

  • Likely. Usually an x in things like that just means that there's some number or something there. But unless the device you're formatting the drive for is super old, you'd probably be better served with fat32.

  • homestar? as in strongbad's homestar runner?

  • Excwllent explanation. Easy to follow also for new at Ubuntu people!!

    Thanks a lot
