The Philippines is one of the most corrupt countries in the world but at par from its African counterparts. It need infusion of new knowledge from "new" people. Another big one is the housing bubble. I've seen (non prime)lots go for p4,000 a sq meter excluding house.I can buy a house for the same in the U.S as the philippines and add on the banks in the philippines charge 8-11% interest vs 5% in the U.S it just don't make sence.
I've been living in the philippines part time for 5 years and one of the biggest problems here are the banking systems. Just like the U.S a banking system can wreck a country in no time. But there are so many problems here. The police are under paid as are the teachers, lack of grants for poor people for school. The Government does not properly fund needed jobs. also the taxing on a business is to high so many corparations that would come here stay away for lack of tax breaks.

In the Philippines 16.8 percent of the total registered nurses (professionals) has no job (as of 2004)! It's a good idea but if the government is not raising the standard of education in all levels by investing more resources nothing will change. Teachers should be given incentives who raise the standards of achievement and discipline. More schools should be established or renovated to accommodate the increasing number of students.

yes, it is a poor country financially. However, after being there many times and a wife from there, I have seen a lot. No single entity is to blame. My country, US, has done a lot to help there, but its not enough. Filipinos are very educated, but a lack of finance, investment, etc makes it worse. A light manufacturing base (cars) would do well. I would rather buy a Filipino car than a chinese car. Filipinos speak english, have culture close to ours and they are very kind.

In the Philippines 16.8 percent of the total registered nurses (professionals) has no job (as of 2004)! to solve the poverty is to volunteer specially if you have excess money that you can't use or think to use,if I would be bless by GOD with a good business I would volunteer to help the philippines and propose many projects and using my own money,and we have to follow all the laws but not all of it specially if it ban a filipino culture or a background of corruption is surrounding that law.

@templar1694 you have a good idea .. but change should come from the people ,, people are more corrupt than the government .. God told us to multiply, right? what did the Filipino people did? they make 10 to 12 children but they did not support its education because of excuse they are poor... if you know you are poor during your wedding then why did you make many children? is that not corruption ?

many people are focused on thngs that are irrelevant to prosperity. for example, skin color is an obsession with people there. maybe also, stop marginalizing certain people in your country...such as the aetas, igorots, ect...you never know, within one of those poplulations can be the the brilliance that is needed to strengthen your people...also, stop self hating....embrace yourselves and stop lookng at others as so much better than yourselves. stop colonial mentality

The VERY 1st thing that Philippines should do if they want to bring change is unveil and persecute all corrupt politicians because they are responsible for handling the people's money.
The real answer here is free education from elementary to secondary, so people can make better choices and decision to prosper.

@Nihawmah killing corrupt politicians will not help make the philippines rich .. free education can be a help , but focus on creating or inventing our own products for our own use and for export purposes is the way to go for our country..
politicians corrupt or not .. cannot make philippines rich but millions of people that will try to invent products can make us a rich country..

and add to that..i think talent is going out of the Philippines really fast...too many people leave the country and go to other countries for a BIGGER pay check...which is 100% understandable...however...none of that talent is able to grow in our country to help foster any industry to grow whether it be Engineering, Chemical Engineering or even Business Management...let's hope the whoever the new president is can solve these issues and create some MOMENTUM in turning our country around...

There should be a collection of intelligent students then let them do research and development and pay them higher pay check so every one will be encouraged to become inventors for our country

Philippines needs to embrace a Confucius philosophy in order to turn our Country around....countries like Singapore and South Korea had or were influenced by the teachings of Confucius...and also of course to be REALLY STRICT on corruption....i guess that's my take on this matter

change the people's attitude towards self reliance n perseverance.. not relying always on foreign aid.. enforce family planning, legalize abortion, remove church powers n sway over the ignorant masses..educate people in honest n efficient governance, not stealing.. so simple is the answer but difficult to implement thats why the country needs disasters that kill!!

They should be provided with adequate funding to have new materials such as new books and new facilities to create a better atmosphere in the educational system.
The Philippines is spending less per student in comparison to several countries in Asia. Maybe it's the people who create more jobs but it's the government's responsibility to give the youths the tools in order to succeed.

It's a good idea but if the government is not raising the standard of education in all levels by investing more resources nothing will change. Teachers should be given incentives who raise the standards of achievement and discipline. More schools should be established or renovated to accommodate the increasing number of students.

@Flipsify raise the level or standard of education.. it should be american based .. focus education or the british way of education .. not general education from elementary, to high school to college .. it should be focus education where a computer science student should have subjects related ONLY on CS and no more physical education and other nonsense subjects..

It is NOT the RESPONSIBILITY of the Government to create jobs for the PEOPLE.
Bill Gates (PEOPLE) build Microsoft then the company HIRE Fathers (PEOPLE) to work for Microsoft.
So it is PEOPLE creating jobs for PEOPLE.
The father (PEOPLE) did NOT know how to BUILD a company to create jobs for other PEOPLE so they stay home to make more babies.
PEOPLE did NOT create JOBS then create more babies (PEOPLE) from year 1880 to 2009. Father (PEOPLE) who MADE our Philippines POOR.
