@SMGleader selfish? he did it because he didnt agree with our government and all the people that died because of the governments actions, thats not selfish, it would be selfish if he did it cause of his own depression or somthing to do with HIMSELF, he atleast died for a cause greater then himself and with his death he made a bigger impact on the world then you will ever make in your entire life.
I'm 18. 2006 was not that long ago for me. I first heard of this today on a small blog, listing unusual suicides. I was dumbstruck. I double checked the year. 2006. A protest and sacrifice of this magnitude, and I had never heard a peep about it. I don't doubt at all, actually, I am positive that the government was behind keeping a lid on this.
I cannot and will not lionize this man's final act. To condone his suicide is to suggest that other people should do the same. He considered all American taxpayers complicit in the war. To admire his act and continue to pay taxes is hypocrisy. If you really believe this man, and believe in his final act, you simply cannot go on doing what you are doing.
@TarquinThaProud His family and friends will never see him again hes fucking dead, crazy suicidal imbecile and him lighting himself on fire like an idiot didn't fix anything.
You wish you had the courage and conviction that these people owned. It is easy to fly into a building, play Russian roulette with your life in War etc.
But to Immolate yourself? Sadly it is in fact the ultimate in Passive Terrorism and People Don't Give a Hoot about the Poor Anywhere.
Has anyone uploaded the actual suicide video? It's a public record of the police file. I'll broadcast it on my TV show, like those Vietnam monks on network TV.
I realize this and I may correct it in a new version. For what it's worth you are the first person in a year since this was posted who actually noticed that. Now I'm busted. .
Most of the comments, sadly, should be deleted. shame on you making fun of the narration or the pictures. You don't have to fully agree with Malachi's act, it was his path not yours, so let's not do any judging here. The action has vast international political ramifications. He is remembered in Chicago and around the world this weekend. 1-year anniversary. END THE WAR IN IRAQ
I can't even watch this video because of the way you chose to narrate it. While I appriciate that you are trying to dramatize and bring light to this overlooked event, I can't stand your voice! You sound like your trying to seduce your viewers into bed. I feel like i'm being told this story by a male, phone sex, operator. Redo the narration and let his actions be the intrigue your trying to achieve. No one likes a drama queen.
Personally I hate the narration now too. I had a voiceover guy who fell through and I made the mistake of trying to modify my voice to sound deeper when I had to do it myself. . . . . but I am past it and on to new stuff. If it was picked up to be used in a bigger capacity I would redo it but it's just a YouTube video at this point.
Woah, wtf was the naked one all about, might not be appropriate for YouTube, trust me, I drew two censored cartoons and someone flagged them and they were removed.
Although I do not endorse Milachi Ritscher's ultimate form of protest, I do honor and admire his courage and dedication to the anti-war movement. His actions were well thought out and his intention was admirable.
If you want to make a difference in this world, the best thing to do would be to live and fight for a change, not light yourself on fire and kill yourself.
I guess the real question here is: Is self sacrifice something that will have meaning in the modern age? That photo of the Bhuddist monk in 1963 became a world Icon for the Vietnam protest. The Quaker who burned himself in front of the Pentagon in 1965 profoundly influenced the secretary of Defense of the time. Jesus could be said to have self-immolated. Did that death have meaning? I am not compairing these people to Jesus as much as I am the idea of a meaningful self sacrifice.
This is a deep question. I've really struggled with it myself. Richter made me think of Norman Morrison under McNamara's window, and Quc or Duq or whatever our monk friend's name was.
Ultimately I reached an unambiguous conclusion: No. Malachi was just a depressed brainy fellow, who wandered around graveyards because he was ill: ill to not want life.
He would have killed himself anyway, if there were no war. He's photos speak that. Perhaps too Morrison and Duc.
I should add, I changed my mind about Morrison and Duc, bc they were religious.
That is a big difference. They were confident of better lives after death, and their certitude that life exists beyond life is part of the allure, for us: these people truly believe their existences continue after death.
Not MR, sadly. He just wanted to go away, and it's unhealthy to imagine otherwise, as had been my initial instinct.
You make interesting points and I really must say I have no idea what the motives of Malachi were. I chose the photos with the skull etc because they were ironic. A lot of what Malachi did with his time was photograph and record inde bands in the Chicago music scene. Most of his photos on the website were of him with these artists in various ways but I didn't want to include other people so I stick with his self portraits.

Courage?
He left a family behind. His statement fell on death ears. Typical white liberal cultural appropriation.
He's not a monk and I bet he screamed in regret and pain after he lit himself on fire.
THAT'S why we haven't seen the video.

wish more people would pay attention though but as Malachi said the majority just care about their ringtones and not much else.
so sadly ironic.

The monk wasn't protesting the war in vietnam he was protesting the south veitnamese government's mild pro catholic anti buhdist stance on religion.
