I received one from Santa 1966 Christmas, in 7th Grade, 12 years old....it was a unit exactly like this from G.C. Murphy Co....the Annex....it was a Philco Stereo tilt down just like this in Blue.....We still have it in Storage in my Mother's Attic.....HTH in Wheeling, WV
I have a very similar player. It is white/gray with the same case, but only three knobs on the front and two knobs on the player deck. The badge on the deck says Magnavox Automatic 400. The 45 stack adapter is missing, but was rectangular and clipped into a holder on the inside sidewall. The turntable is slightly smaller, but it plays 78, 45, 33, and 16's. Can anyone tell me what years these were manufactured? It looks 60's maybe very early 70's.
These are beautiful, rich machines but I could never live with one. The downside of that tap the edge of the record-size selection mechanism is that these units could not be set to REPEAT play ANY given record regardless of size or speed or whatever position you left the balance arm. Thus, you'd have to get up and start it over every single time. That would get old fast. I'll take a latter day Voice of Music changer.
I have an old magnavox stereo similar to yours that I`ve had since it was new and a gift from my parents back in the sixties, after a long useful life, it had been stored in our attic for many years, and when I took it out to test it recently, the changer really did`nt work any more, so I was ready to chuck it out, but as an experiment I took the time to clean and lube the changer, and I actually breathed new life into it, and it works like new again. you can`t kill these magnavox phonographs
I had a GE Wildcat I sold a few years ago. Hands down, Magnavox was better on every front....quality of construction, audio fidelity, stylus pressure. To be fair, I don't think they were in the same class...the Wildcat was strictly a portable and this is sort of a hybrid.
I agree with cliftdean, "The Maggie is better on every front. " Coolbluelights 1962 GE tube portable is also a good record player and yep better than a Wildcat too.
How much did you get for it?
Oh ja, I like that Sugar Shack....

Why does the needle knock the edge of the record before switching?
FuckingStanz 1 year ago
@FuckingStanz It's measuring the diameter of the record before it drops to see where it should place the needle.

I now have a new respect for the phonographs, and I think they`re just great. It`s now in regular use and I`ll always use it.

I agree!
A Magnavox Micromatic was the Technics of the 60's in every form.

I would compare my GE Wildcat over the Magnavox, because GE is a better winner than the Maggie's hands down.
