I checked out the specs for the laptop and they're not great. 500mb ram, 15" display, basic dual core cpu approx 1.75ghz. You wouldn't want to run Compiz-Fusion on this thing.

Installing, Compiling and configuring Gentoo takes hours and sometimes days, that's why it's not an option, besides most people (including me) don't like compiling everything from source, and going through all the Gentoo configuration trouble just to get a few seconds of performance boost is not worth it in my opinion, unless you like doing it.

I want to compile from source because I don't trust other people binaries. I need to compile from source because I am working in a lab and need the extra processing power. (Plus I have the extra machines at work to help with the compiling time)

I was not trying to change Nixie's decision. Just saying I don't like it. I get that I am kind of off in left field.

Gentoo speed run install = approx 5+5 minutes (unpack stage3, unpack portage,compile customized kernel). Oh that would be just awesome, thus newbies couldn't understand what are you doing :)
