There also another 'Gaucho' outtake out there called 'Heartbreak Souvenir" which Fagen discarded because he found it ' too hard to sing'. Besides many of these great outtake, they could also dust off and record the fabulous " This all too mobile home" which can be heard on a couple of bootlegs from their 1974 Pretzel Logic tour.
@MrNiceJoeB Sure, that seems reasonable. But is this a version they didn't like? If so, how did it make it out of "the vaults"? That's what I was wanting to know...
@Caulfield789 They where sticklers for perfection in the studio, this didn't turn out the way they wanted and it was during contract disputes with their record company so they dropped it. Sadly never to pick it back up again.
MAN does this song KICK ASS! WHAT a shame that it only exists in bootleg form.
I want to go on record to say that the lyric is "LaRue steps out with no regrets". knowing Steely Dan and their penchant for obscure lyrics, coupled with what Donald sang at the live rarities show (watch?v=G0E3K04oy4s), I think that is the official lyric.
@InterMadness ok, it's not "LaRue"... i think it's "the roué", which the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines as "a man devoted to a life of sensual pleasure".
@DanSteely3 It was. My first Dan show too. Absolutely amazing, though there were one too many pricks on their cell phones in the audiance for my taste. A great show, and a great performance of this one.
They did a couple other rarities (not that many of them, despite the name); The Bear, A blues version of Jack of Speed, a hippie-ish number they wrote for Thomas Jefferson K called "American Lovers," and their closer form the 70's, "This Mobile Home."
@stonyhil At a guess... this is probably a rough mix dubbed off during recording for at-home listening purposes. There would've been lots of these made during the recording process, possibly on a daily basis, but this would have all been pre- final mixdown... so although lots of the parts would have been recorded, the end result was still far away - especially for perfectionists like Steely Dan. Even if someone wanted to make a CD track out of this, it's probably from cassette... forget it!
I read Reelin In The Years by Brian Sweet ages ago and I'm currently reading the updated version. He mentions this song in the Gaucho chapter and the story how the engineer erased the song by mistake.Since then I've always wondered what it was like and now miraculously and by chance I found this!.It's a great song worthy of such a magnificent album and now I've finally heard it-thank you.
I'm not getting what's missing in this version. Why was this not released? Their recent stuff is a lot starker from an orchestrial standpoint. The vocals sound complete, guitar riffs, keys.....sounds like a finished take to me
Is it true that this song was going to be on Gaucho but an engineer accidentally erased the finished tapes? how hard would it have been to just redo it?
@funkmike you are correct. it is true. the engineer's assistant was getting the finished multi-track master tape ready for playback and accidently hit the record button instead of the play button and erased over 3/4 of the tape. steely dan's music had so many overdubs and layers to it. they were perfectionists and probably spent hours or even days or weeks on one song at a time. in the end they decided it would be too much trouble to redo it so they abandoned it.
If they got the original masters for this demo and cleaned them up again, we'd be on to something I reckon... It's obviously a shame that the original was destroyed, and y'know, accidents happen, but it's still frustrating that Becker and Fagen just left this track in the wilderness forever... It's a great song.

I wonder if it's supposed to sound like "first derangement", "second derangement", etc. Could the title be a pun?

So...does anyone have any idea where this version comes from?

A great, lost classic. A masterpiece, pure and simple.

Great composition but knowing the Gaucho album, it's not easy to imagine this song included.

I love how Fagen's vocal intonation makes it sound like "first derangement".

When you're a perfectionist and you've spent many many sessions on something and then lose it, it's kind of difficult to get motivated to do it over.
