In most armies medical personnel are not allowed to carry weapons which I am sure is supposed to give them special protection under the Geneva convention. I would have thought the US military would be the same. Have the script writers gotten this wrong.

Although set in Korea the show commenced while the US was still involved in Vietnam. The show is a criticism of the incompetence of the people in charge of US operations in Nam and has little to do with it's Korean experience

@ChuckaXr: I realized the lefty/anti-US slant of the show when I was very young. I still believe MASH is one of the greatest TV shows of all time, but part of that is because I recognize the illogical and often imbecilic nature of pacifists. That's why scenes like this can still be so funny, albeit for a different reason than the writers probably intended.

@tucsonia No, it was true then too. This is just poetic license. They wanted to drive home Hawkeye's pacifism and non-military nature. Nobody could have ordered or permitted a doctor to carry a gun, even during WWII. It would have been a war crime under the Geneva Convention to arm a non-combatant doctor.

Medics, on the other hand, have always carried weapons and were trained to use them, even in Korea. The #1 rule for a medic is "First defend, then treat."

@tucsonia Nowadays in Afghanistan, all medical personnel are required to have guns on them at all times when at the base. An example of this would be the show Combat Hospital, where one character always has a side arm even when she goes for a run. I've looked into becoming an army dentist, and one of the things you have to take is firearm training because even dentists are required to wear them.
