My favorite song from the '80's. I started working for a company on February 10, 1986, and about a month later this song came out on the radio. We had about seven people in a large room and we all listened to one radio. I heard this song so many times, but I loved it - I could not get enough of it. It brings back memories of working for a great company with great people.
I only lived 3 years in the Bay Area, but having a Howard Jones tune on the car radio, driving in at 4 a.m. to Palo Alto to work from Portola Valley (we lived in a cabin! in the foothills), or up the Bayshore Freeway to San Francisco, was/is a touchstone memory of that time in my life ... :)
The Eighties were the decade when music stopped being Black or White. There was still R&B, pop and rock music, but the lines blurred in the decade. Everybody sang everybody's music. In the crowds at the concerts you saw teased up blonde hair next to drippy Jheri curls, preppy shirts next to parachute pants. We all dug the music the same. I miss those days.
To throbbin87...don't be sad. You don't know how things might have turned out with the one you think you should have been with. You may have dodged a nightmare. You will never know. What you do have is the person you did wind up with, and that person is with you. Anybody who is with us is worth far more than the memory of a person who isn't. Good luck and be happy.
In this song, I don't think the intent was to describe a romantic relationship, but instead, Jones refers to her/she to represent life fulfillment...attainment of Maslow's highest need...self-actualization. The song can be interpreted, in that context, by both men and women of any sexual orientation. I do believe that was the artists intentional message.
There's a lot to be said for music that shares softer emotions like regret, loss, and longing. That may be the seeming disconnect in today's music. Angst and crude lust seem to dominate.
I don't think think so! Every generation has their own interpretation of what is "softer emotions like regret, loss". Just because its not the same as ours, doesn't mean its not there. Its just a matter of re inventing your self....you will find it again in the present music, don't get stuck in your own past it will be the death of the world as you know it, i promise.
One of the greatest gifts of music is its ability to take you back in time and relive experiences and people. Music of the 80s makes me remember great times.
@mexicandamon Shut up you idiot! I will never understand anyone who cannot simply appreciate this sort of music for how brilliant it is. Yes, the 80's was agreat decade for music. Why can'r we have anything like it today. It makes me sad.
One of my favorite songs from the 80's! What a great song - I thank God everyday I was a child of the 80's! I tell the young kids today they have been robbed of good music. I feel bad for them....
This is a super awesome song. I get sentimental listening -- I am taken back to really nice 80's memories. I never took the time to attend a concert, but sure wish I had. Listening now is almost just as good! Thank you, Howard! And, thank you, You tube!!

I danced to this song in high school with a guy I really liked, but never suspected he liked me. At the end of the song, he gave me a long, passionate kiss, & then asked me out. I felt like I was the luckiest girl in school, until we broke up 6 months later...

I don't dress like that anymore lol, but I know music like this will live on when my 15 year old daughter walks through the house singing "no one is to blame". It puts a big smile on my face when she says "dad the 80's were awesome"! I say yes...they were

@throbbin87 ...check out another 80's song "NEVER SURRENDER!"....you're still young, Life DOES go on AND when the shit hits the fan remember...."This too SHALL pass!".....Good Luck!

How odd. To take the blame for the past...but forgetting how much it hurts the present. It just keeps tearing you down. But it also takes away from others...leaving you totally alone. I have to thank you....for the heartache. I take the blame for allowing it tho. You see...I fell in love.......and my love does not seem to be enough. You don't let go of that past......and live for now. I need to be happy with someone who will be happy with me....and the past will be erased....if you let it.
THIS IS GOING TO TAKE A LOT OF BALLS...BUT I HAVE FINALLY FREE MYSELF OF THIS..I AM THE ONE THAT FUCKED UP THE LOVE OF MY LIFE, WITH MY X WIFE LAURA OF LONG ISLAND..DAMN....I WAS TO BLAME, 100000000%..IM SO SORRY I SCREWED YOU UP AND KILLED THE RELATIONSHIP WE HAD FOR 19 GREAT YEARS, TIL I BLEW IT...

I agree with you folks about the 80s...............good times, enjoy the music with someone you cared about, night clubs that played good dance music, and hanging out late nights eating at any restaurant that was open :)
Class of 1985 here.Great era for music although it seems that we,the people that lived the greatest times of their teenage years are the only ones who love and miss the 80s.I have younger friends that call the 80s the worst decade for music,I constantly defend.Dont insult a time when you were just a small child instead of an adventurous and wild teen, you just dont know, cartoons maybe.Sorry for the rant. Many feelings and memories from the 80s.Miss them dearly.
@theburningattack- Its about relationships and the "ground rules" of not cheating on your partner, but you can fall in and out of love- "You can look at the menu, but you cant eat" I seen him live and he talked about it and he is an incredible artist!!
When this song came out.....I was living the Primest Years of my life....had a LOT of fun, made stupid decisions...but hey that's the sign of a good life, right? Thanks for the post, and rehashing some Great times, for me.......
Just watched an episode of Everybody Hates Chris with my daughter, and she said mom you know this song. I couldnt remember who sung the song, but i just typed in the chorus and up it popped. Thanks for posting such a classic from the 80's!!!
Okay, it's a yes, that's Phil Collins on the drums; he is also credited with background vocals and producing this album, according to allmusic.com. Cool!
@trailerlivin wow, that is very cool, phil collins was the man back in the day, helping with songs and producing all kinds of stuff, we probably truely dont really know how much influence he had on music in general. Phils been in the backround for a long time.
The best part about the 80's is that most of the artists weren't exeactly the best looking.....but....no one cared about it back then. Music is for the ears....the eyes shouldn't have any say in it.
@Surannhealz I am glad that you said that, for people today think it is all about looks. Real artists worked on their talent and had style and showmanship. Today's artist look like either prostitutes, or one who just got out of parole. Oh, let's not forget that women in the 80's dressed with class.
@millertas yeah, good thing we have common sense and toned down outfits now, eh? (sarcasm included) I'd take the most outrageous 80s outfits any day over the bling garbage today. Or rather, meat hanging off of singers.
We heard this song at FULL BLAST when my morbidly gay nigger friends were having hardcore buttfucking gay nigger sex!!!!! Were gonna play this song later tonight when my morbidly gay nigger friends take advantage of each others' highly orgasmic buttholes to celebrate new years 2011!
Even music made by niggers is hated by friends of mine (who happen to be niggers), this is why we listen to white dudes like Howard Jones FTW
This is a song people should slow-dance to, not hip hop ballads! Its just sinful that music just isn't made the same anymore!
I hope 2011 makes music better, if it doesn't I'll be sorry I ever heard of Lady Gaga. Howard Jones is so long before Lady Gaga, that its just too bad that he isn't as famous at the moment!
@eyvonne1120 Excactly. There was a ton of music in the 80s that two people could slow dance to,really get close, look that person in the eyes, beautiful stuff. What do they do today for that?I was a freshman in highschool in 1980,cant hit the 80s any better than that.Great music and great times,I really miss it.
Are you Howard Jones trying to persuade people your song is uber? Granted, it's a nice song.... but I don't think it's remotely close to the best song of the 80's. I'd say it's in the top 20 though.
I really love this beautiful song, it has stayed with me for over 25 years! I remember rushing to Woolworths record blitz in my school lunch hour (Greggs sausage roll in hand) and spending my pocket money on the Dream into Action cassette... happy days. The other version on YouTube are worth a listen too.
I wouldn't say this is my favorite song. But I did like it. This song has always intrigued me because I never could quite figure out what Mr. Jones was trying to say through it.
WHY WOULD ANYONE DISLIKE THIS SONG

This is the "Phil Collins version" of this song (peaked #4 in the US). You can hear his backing vocals throughout the song after the drums kick in.

The best part about the 80's is that most of the artists weren't exeactly the best looking.....but....no one cared about it back then. Music is for the ears....the eyes shouldn't have any say in it.

@Surannhealz I was quite the Duran Duran fan then......uh...hmmmm THEY WERE HOTTT

@Surannhealz: Maybe not, but it was difficult to be unattractive AND still be successful, during those first 8 or 10 years of MTV...
unclejeffj 11 months ago
@Surannhealz I am glad that you said that, for people today think it is all about looks. Real artists worked on their talent and had style and showmanship. Today's artist look like either prostitutes, or one who just got out of parole. Oh, let's not forget that women in the 80's dressed with class.
taichi29 11 months ago 3
@Surannhealz << So true... look at Simple Minds. But they were still one of the best back then.

@Surannhealz The fashion got rather outrageous.
millertas 11 months ago
@millertas yeah, good thing we have common sense and toned down outfits now, eh? (sarcasm included) I'd take the most outrageous 80s outfits any day over the bling garbage today. Or rather, meat hanging off of singers.

@Surannhealz Your comment made me smile, something I don't do very often. Thanks.

@Surannhealz Exactly. Remember Boy George? No one cared that HE looked like a SHE. We just loved his music. I miss the 80s.

Oh yeah!!!!!!!
BUTTFUCK FOR 2011 TO AN 80S SONG
GayNiggerSex 1 year ago
This is a song people should slow-dance to, not hip hop ballads! Its just sinful that music just isn't made the same anymore!
I hope 2011 makes music better, if it doesn't I'll be sorry I ever heard of Lady Gaga. Howard Jones is so long before Lady Gaga, that its just too bad that he isn't as famous at the moment!
SamuraiClinton 1 year ago
@SamuraiClinton its also quite creepy how a Lady Gaga video for Bad Romance came up when this video ended.

this is when music meant something...
eyvonne1120 1 year ago
@eyvonne1120 Excactly. There was a ton of music in the 80s that two people could slow dance to,really get close, look that person in the eyes, beautiful stuff. What do they do today for that?I was a freshman in highschool in 1980,cant hit the 80s any better than that.Great music and great times,I really miss it.

Billboard's #44 song of '86. Howard hit # AC, #4 pop, #20 rock, in the US. How'd he do in the UK? God bless!

This is the 80's best song.
Saltor66 1 year ago
@Saltor66 and who made that decision?
Are you Howard Jones trying to persuade people your song is uber? Granted, it's a nice song.... but I don't think it's remotely close to the best song of the 80's. I'd say it's in the top 20 though.
hospitalbedpan1 1 year ago
@hospitalbedpan1 It simply is my own opinion.
