I'm self taught and have been doing this for a couple years now. I didn't really know of another way to do it. I have been able to achieve lots of power too. The only problem is that I go to fast! Like I naturally go at 190 bpm or so doing this, and when I practice with a metronome, I work on slooowwwinggg it down. It's difficult.
Yeah at first I thought this would work and for a while I did it but once I started actually listening to the bass drum I noticed how sloppy it was and it totally screwed over my heel up double bass now and I need to completely re teach myself so I wouldn't recommend this.
I'm sure a lot of people have commented on this, without actually getting behind a kit and trying it out. It's actually a really effective method, using your legs' natural jerk reaction to actually achieve fast, precise strokes. The power is still there, it just needs to be practiced so your leg's muscle memory becomes accustomed to it. This is how I learned to strengthen my legs for more demanding double-bass music, like death metal. Try it without bashing it first. It just might work.
I tried this when I started double bass this just develops into bad habits. Learn the proper way by starting off slow and working your way up. There's no short cuts.
@TheUnconsecrated Everyone talks about "swivel" without knowing shit about it.
So, what exactly is this double stroke swivel that you described? Seriously now, the famous swivel technique is basically the same thing in the vid (or heel up) but only with swiveling your ankle because of some reaons which I can't recall.
It's pointless if you can't play the left foot at the same tempo as the right. You need to have complete control of both feet and be able to play them both at the same tempo with your chosen technique. After that is established then you can think about increasing tempos.
I personally actually use this technique, (although slightly more refined) and i have trained until i get alot of speed, but it takes practice and a little persceverence technique wise to get the most power you can, which for me by now, is alot:)
haha i did that before and i was like woah! im going godspeed lol but yea lacks power but not the speed. maybe if you like put your foot on half of the pedal and just do it.
this is terrible. i knew this before i saw the video or even heard anyone say anything about it, but you cannot control when it hits the bass. sometimes it misses and it gets off beat so SO easily
@memoraxdabaker Any technique will work, including this one. It is about developing muscle memory and plateauing your leg muscles. But you are right, it is all just practice.
this is nothing amazing, common sense really. I hate how drummers learn a few techniques and think theyre genius'. I dont see this same neurosis happening within guitar culture. An interesting thought.
when i try it at school, (yes i pretend i am a famous death metal rockstar) i cant stop my legs when i want to. I learned that you are doing it wrong, sorry O.o
do you have control on your feet? i don't think so. i don't want to offend but... i think you're too weak with your feet... this technique gives you power to use, but with control. no offensive but... you haven't
its called flat foot technique dude, derek roddy uses it, just watch derek roddy's explanation for this technique, i practice this technique and i get a lot of power and stamina out of it.
Thats why derek roddy uses this technique, cause he doesnt like triggers, you have to kind of lift your whole legs so you get a lot of power out of it
this is accually a better way because its using momentum
there is no "right" way, but to be honest, i get faster when i play like this.
i perfer this when i play long parts that have to be faster, but its harder to switch up from maybe long "RLRLRLR---" to triplets, or w/e.
the more traditional versions (heel down/ flat foot, etc) are good for playing with more control, obviously you have less control this way because you have to find the sweet spot.
you can use it with both feet. all you do is tense up both your feet. but it doesn't fully work. both feet will play amazingly fast but at the same time making flams and occasionally for straight 16th notes but then back to flams. just work up the speed on both feet.
They are Dixon PP9290D Pedals, I got them, They are middle range pedals nothink special. They squeek because you have to service them but dumb kids these days don't know the word service.
try to get your heel lower when doing this, you will see that there is much more movement possible with your technique.
more movement -> more beater distance -> more volume. check my ankle motion video, there you see what i mean.
however, heel down is 80% the thing that i would practise to go for fast ankles - i dont understand what the people were shiting about... you are a good musician since you learn and adapt, dont let them get you down!
im just saying if one foot cant do it wor on it!!! lol cool vid though i enjoyed it i see swivel technique wors well to break tension in the top part of the ankle
I think it's the same idea as playing Flat-footed. You're using your hip muscles and twitching them real fast. Only problem is, your version doesn't get much power at all.
Don't diss heel-down technique. I've always played double bass heel down and I can go surprisingly fast for this. Heel-down is probably the most under used technique in the metal scene... So sad...
your an idiot dude how about you try and sync both feet together not just one foot at a timethen show me that its easy..you cant keep it going steady with that technique, if you can i wanna see a vid of it
yeah that's a fast way, but if you are about to change rythm, you will fail cause your leg will stay in "auto" mode xP, that's how i started playing double bass drum and once i started like that i had to continuine whole song like that, so it's better to train slowly on normal heel up double bass drum
i got those pedals off eBay for 80 bucks and they work quite well and for 80 dollars i guess they are great i would recommend those pedals for anyone looking not to spend a lot of money
hey those pedals you bought from ebay, are they a name brand cuz i got a double bass pedal off ebay for 80 bucks too... and mine aren't a name brand... their pretty decent pedals.. but i had to tighten up everything cuz it was fallin apart right outa the box... lol...
the problem with this is you end up hitting both beaters together most of the time so it ends up being very sloppy and crappy sounding but you never know there might be someone out there it would work for
Has nothing to do with nervousness, it's place ment of feet and leg and shit. what you do is you place your foot way back on the pedal and do a sorta "twitch" technique with your shin muscles.

You're an idiot. You completely misunderstood what he is talking about. He was using shaking your leg from being nervous as an example. Fucking idiot.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is a good way to do it, I also use that sort of thing with my hands to play fast with my left hand for snare drum, but I am 14 years old and I use the same sort of thing at about 275-280 bpm.
ive been playin with that for about two years. I simply noticed the leg shaking thing and thought... that's really energy saving (you use the calf instead of the tiny muscles over the shin like you do when your heel touches the ground). it was really hard at first to synchronize but after about a year of practicing on the bus/subway, driving old ladies crazy and all the time when listenin to music i developed pretty powerful synchronized methods.
another thing i think is that its very hard to control or play for example patterns with this technique as its just a kind of uncontrolled jerking with your legs ;D
This technique is called tapping haha it kinda cheating if you have triggers but with mics you probubly wont hear your self with this much power. i just play heel up and relax my leg movement from side to side so i do some form of swivel but very ruff
i have that dixon pedal and i absolutely hate it for this kind of playing. does anyone know of a rather cheap good pedal like iron cobra? not as expensive as axis?
i dont do it consantly but I use it for wicked fast rolls. A better way to add more power is to kinda drop your heel more while your shaking your foot. and also try to push forward a little bit.
i agree, im a guitarist but recently took up drums too, and i have that foot problem (when not playing drums). i didnt think about applying it to drums, i just thought everybody did it anyway, but yes i agree, i've found it effective for playing fast but its hard to keep them perfectly balanced. they keep syncing up
thats the way i started playing double bass. i just practiced and started hitting harder and more controlled. so now i have no prob playing 230-250 bpm:P
to go faster than that i need to go heel/toe i think.
figured that out buy my self dude omg lol i gues im a natural because i figured thats how your supposed to do it but i guess its probably the best one for metal
how do you like that bass drum practice pad? and what kind is it? i've been looking around for some and i haven't had much luck finding an inexpensive one and i was just wondering if its a realistic feel or not
man i do the same, i had the same idea. it gets better with my left foot. i only get it straight a for a few seconds but its fuckin fast. i work on it some time. but you need a lot of attack and maybe triggers to make it sound clear. its not loud enough, and it sounds a bit...unclear and undefined.
Anyway, if you do a lot of speeding up and slowing down, it's not good to rely on a reflex to start and stop when you want it, or even control the speed (eg you start blasting away 64th notes, then you want to drop to 32nd notes, it's difficult to control).
Anyway, I don't want to rag on this or be rude, I just wanted to point out that reflexes are hard to control. =)
i disagree, and i think that thats mainly because you dont even play double bass. i dont mean to be rude but it is impossible to have an opinion about a technique like this without ever trying it. i found this technique on my own and i use it a lot, and just like every other technique it takes a lot of practice to get it going smoothly and to be able to transition into different speeds, so its not excessively hard to control after a lot of practice.
Fair enough. I use the technique when I'm playing around (I'm pretty sure anyone who's put their foot on a pedal and decided they want to try and play it fast has "discovered" this technique), and I just think that it's easier to just use heel toe or the ankle, than to try and master a reflex.
It goes fast, but like you said it doesn't have very much power. It's also difficult to control; I don't play double bass (I'd like too, just can't afford the pedals right now), so I don't know a whole lot about it, but my drum teacher likes to give me stuff with a lot of accents and stuff with the pedal. Another downside is that it's an automatic response, so if you condition your brain to it, it'll be hard to start it up (eg, you're playing 16th notes, and then the bar switchs over to 32nds)
how would this cause any type of nerve damage? all this is is twitching your foot, just like many many people do when they are nervous. your nerves are completely unrelated to this technique
you'll sound like the most schizophrenic drummer ever....

it works better when your pedals are closer. it'd sound better if you find the sweet spot and can keep your momentum.
it doesn't work as well if you move/ adjust the foot pedal/ chair.
but it works well if your looking to do crazy fast things for long periods of time.

Krill3Z 2 years ago
Red snare like on guitar hero xD
Nikaholic97 2 years ago
This technique is called tapping haha it kinda cheating if you have triggers but with mics you probubly wont hear your self with this much power. i just play heel up and relax my leg movement from side to side so i do some form of swivel but very ruff
zmanbrody 2 years ago
This don't have enough power, can you hear bass when you play with a band?
LOLE1991KOVIN 2 years ago
are u agreeing with me? i cant tell
zmanbrody 2 years ago
yes, I play heel up too, I tried this, when I practice I hear drums, but when I play with band, I hear onli cymbals and snare, without bass drum
LOLE1991KOVIN 2 years ago
yeah what Deathmetal50 said, just trigger it fool

lol i was at guitar center useing double bass stoped to talk to someone and my leg started twitching really fast XD
CHICKMAGNET66666 2 years ago
that's called twitching, and you're unable to control it at slower speeds, and yeah its really quiet
ThrillMonger 2 years ago
its not quiet with axis longboards :P
Krill3Z 2 years ago
i do that technique but it definitely wares out my legs quicker
SteelDrummer94 2 years ago
i have that dixon pedal and i absolutely hate it for this kind of playing. does anyone know of a rather cheap good pedal like iron cobra? not as expensive as axis?
ackmarzmenn 2 years ago
get the pearl powershifter
SKA8TERplusLAX 2 years ago
Thats how i do it XD
i dont do it consantly but I use it for wicked fast rolls. A better way to add more power is to kinda drop your heel more while your shaking your foot. and also try to push forward a little bit.
darkeryche 2 years ago
i agree, im a guitarist but recently took up drums too, and i have that foot problem (when not playing drums). i didnt think about applying it to drums, i just thought everybody did it anyway, but yes i agree, i've found it effective for playing fast but its hard to keep them perfectly balanced. they keep syncing up
TaintTheAbyss 2 years ago
i do that technique. its fast, but my feet sync with each other after a while
TDM14Animation 2 years ago
derek gets power aplenty with this technique, but ur feet need to be further back on the board.
sorbosux717 2 years ago
thats the way i started playing double bass. i just practiced and started hitting harder and more controlled. so now i have no prob playing 230-250 bpm:P
to go faster than that i need to go heel/toe i think.
fisketruten 2 years ago
Yeh, i started like that too but heel-toe is faster.
HDeathknight 2 years ago
of course heel-toe is faster, but how many times do you need to play over 250?
fisketruten 2 years ago
this is def faster.
darkeryche 2 years ago
i do that its just hard to it accurate and not uneven or however u wanna describe it
BaseCase1996 2 years ago
OH MY GOD! That's exactly what i've been doing. Lol
JakeSmaszcz 2 years ago
on an acoustic set u would need triggers for the hit to be loud.
paintballpoop 2 years ago 2
This is the normal way just about everyone hits the higher speeds, nothing earth shattering. It's all about the Hip Flexor muscles.
x8dddx 2 years ago
figured that out buy my self dude omg lol i gues im a natural because i figured thats how your supposed to do it but i guess its probably the best one for metal

scootscootgang 2 years ago
I noticed that myself, too, but I didn't knew if one would be able to play with that.
MoaiMaea 2 years ago
how do you like that bass drum practice pad? and what kind is it? i've been looking around for some and i haven't had much luck finding an inexpensive one and i was just wondering if its a realistic feel or not
samiscool102 2 years ago
ha i got those same pdp pedals
Malinator94 2 years ago
they aren't pdp their dixon
george78610801 2 years ago
yea i figured that out after watchin it again
it jus has the exact same pattern lol
Malinator94 2 years ago
umm thats calls regular heel up ya retard
WiiWillRockYou123 2 years ago
man i do the same, i had the same idea. it gets better with my left foot. i only get it straight a for a few seconds but its fuckin fast. i work on it some time. but you need a lot of attack and maybe triggers to make it sound clear. its not loud enough, and it sounds a bit...unclear and undefined.
so, just keep workin on that, as i do =)

Sorry, my comment got too long. =P
robbtoyo 2 years ago
i disagree, and i think that thats mainly because you dont even play double bass. i dont mean to be rude but it is impossible to have an opinion about a technique like this without ever trying it. i found this technique on my own and i use it a lot, and just like every other technique it takes a lot of practice to get it going smoothly and to be able to transition into different speeds, so its not excessively hard to control after a lot of practice.
samiscool102 2 years ago
Fair enough. I use the technique when I'm playing around (I'm pretty sure anyone who's put their foot on a pedal and decided they want to try and play it fast has "discovered" this technique), and I just think that it's easier to just use heel toe or the ankle, than to try and master a reflex.
robbtoyo 2 years ago
It goes fast, but like you said it doesn't have very much power. It's also difficult to control; I don't play double bass (I'd like too, just can't afford the pedals right now), so I don't know a whole lot about it, but my drum teacher likes to give me stuff with a lot of accents and stuff with the pedal. Another downside is that it's an automatic response, so if you condition your brain to it, it'll be hard to start it up (eg, you're playing 16th notes, and then the bar switchs over to 32nds)
robbtoyo 2 years ago
yeah that's what i do with a single bass to play fast and with a double bass
claymashion123 2 years ago
lol thats wut i do

you can use this technique if you want to, but enjoy the nerve damage in your legs.....
lgeoghegan 2 years ago
LMFAO AHAHAHAHAHAHA LMAO nice nice acturley cried a bit when i read that + from me
buster1700 2 years ago
how would this cause any type of nerve damage? all this is is twitching your foot, just like many many people do when they are nervous. your nerves are completely unrelated to this technique
samiscool102 2 years ago
think you'll find it is twitching which is caused by running on a nerve, it's like a forced spasm pretty much
nerves are related to every fucking thing you do in life, dumbass.
