My first concert was NRBQ in 1972 at The Weston High School in Weston Connecticut. There was probably 35 people there and we had these girls sitting in front of us that we started up with. My buddy Keith came up with saying that he was the cousin to Greg and Dawyne Allman. They bought it. What a night vey cool remember that Ross or should I say Johny now. Very cool time.
Tom, Joey , and Terry have the most unusual techniques. I have never seen any one else play like they do on their respective instruments. It doesn't even look like they could be making those sounds. Who holds drum stick like that? Who plays bass like that with their right hand? No one else. The material may not sound incredibly groundbreaking, but to me NRBQ is one of the Weirdest bands . The 1970 Ludlow Garage recording is one of my favorite albums. NRBQ-Real Rock Heroes!
@transparentape You are absolutely right! I've seen them, and I've never seen a drummer lift the snare hand as high as Tom does! Never hits ahead of the beat, I'll tell you that! Great band.
OMG I remember the piano player, Terry Adams, from Butler HS. in Shively KY @ 1966 WOW! He could always play anything he picked up, and had long hair before is was OK to do so.....Nice to see him still pushing the envelope !......
"who put the garlic in the glue?" I saw this bunch with Al Anderson in Louisville, Ky.
It was a good change, it had to happen as bands go. I don't know what's happened to them boys but I was there, yep, when they got put together. Al is in Nashville I believe. Hope they are all well.
World's Greatest Bar Band. Criminally under-appreciated. Saw them play years ago in a little club in Vancouver, BC. The drummer just kicked ass - he played such a loose, LOUD beat. The band was so good, the crowd was climbing the walls.
If there's enough successful musicians who can say they owe their careers NRBQ, they should be nominated for the HOF, but considering they've been around since '69(reason #1 for Big Al leaving-but before the TV appearances?), that might not be happening.
Love the Q and of course Terry get lots of adulation and attention as well he should, BUT man Joey's style of bass playing is off the charts for me. He sounds more like a stand up player on electric bass then any I can remember. His subtle back beat placement along with Tommy's perfect drum work is unbeatable in my book. I try to turn everyone I can onto the Q and their world.
pusthumanhero-Oh and BTW, Joey may sometimes play with a pick but he isn't even using one for this performance, just so you know. Mostly he uses his finger and thumb as he does in this very video.
Of course, I miss Big Al ... but damn Johnny is burnin' shit up on this ... if anybody had to step in to Al's Big Shoes ... I'm glad they went with a Spampinato brother ...
LOVE the Q.

Love that bass sound. Joey Spampinato is one of the most underated bassists.
