Can't please everyone. I for one thought that this movie adaptation was pretty decent, unlike the Resident Evil 'adaptations'. This movie was one of the better attempts and did fairly well with keeping the suspense and creepiness from the series.
Actually the movie was a fusion of concepts of all the four games, the loss of a child from SH1, Pyramyd Head from SH2, a female protagonist that looks a lot like Heather from SH3, the feeling of being in another dimension at the end of the movie like SH4, if u played the 4 games u will love this movie, I do.
This movie was like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories in the sense that it was a "Re-Imagining." As a Silent Hill fan I can say that I loved this movie, :v even if it was pretty different story-wise from the game.
I hate it when vgame-based movies does not have to do with ANYTHING with the game.I mean,it doesn't have to be EXACTLY like the game,but at least have some elements of the vgame into it.The Silent Hill movie has that,and I'm glad :D
@Darkman5000 What's interesting is that movie hinted that it might not be all Alessa's doing. Right before the infamous "skin rip" moment (how that got past the ratings board, I have no idea) Dahlia points behind the girl before Red Pyramid materializes, almost like SHE summoned him.
Wish they kept it a little closer to the game, but hey i'd rather have them stray from the game than have it be exactly like the game. But they didn't include Lisa and i don't remember if Dr.Kaufman was in it. Hoping the next movie will be good, and if they make a third silent hill movie, they gotta base it off Silent Hill 2. Cuz that one is tied with the third game. Both of them r just so amazing!
It was certainly one of the few (and even I use that word lightly) good movies based on a game. Yea, some of the acting was pretty hammy or wooden (and I think we can all agree there were just too many people). And as pointed out, the monsters lacked much of their deeper symbolism beyond "oh the ash children are the little schmucks who teased Alessa".
Overall though, it was definitely to see something that tried to be scary on a mental level and not just "90 minutes of gore" :P

The ending is very much in tune with the Silent Hill franchise.It's like the bad ending.I would have loved an alternate ending in some form(extra dvd footage or whatnot) but still it's very well done,and to be honest i didnt expect the movie to end that way
I love how they end the movie with "Theme of Laura," but it's a shame that SH2 isn't going to be the next movie. I'd love to see Mary, James, and others on the big screen. Along with Pyramid Head. x3
Great movie. I haven't palyed the silent hill games but this made me pick up SH2 and SH3...amazing take on the horror side of things, its so psychological and deep.
@Badfish93 But there were men in Silent Hill in that game. It'd be crazy if Douglas and Heather are driving there and all of a sudden Douglas just disappears, leaving Heather to go to Silent Hill. They probably should fix it. Unless it's different depending on the people who go there, kinda like James in Silent Hill2. And for those of you out there about to point something out, NO he is NOT Harry Mason in any way. Get your facts straightened out.
I really wanted to like this movie, but after four or five viewings, I've come to the conclusion that it's a complete mess. It sacrifices too much of its own metaphorical merit in favor of homage to the games, and compounds it with lopsided and weird pacing and sub-par acting. The definition of wasted potential.

Its quite confusing how this movie got mainly average/ poor reception especially from well-known critics. I mean as a game to movie adaptation, its far better than Resident Evil/ Alone In The Dark in my opinion. Its even better than any other supposedly horror movies! Cant wait to see Silent Hill Revelation 3D.. wonder whose gonna be playing Heather.

I loved the movie. I hate how it's "Sharon" and not "Cheryl" and how Harry is replaced with Rose. Also, Dahlia was the one who burned Alessa in their home in the game, not Christabella in the church. I would have been pissed if Alessa was "Alyssa" or "Alissa" xD
I love how they used "Tears of..." from the first game. Kinda leaves you with a feeling of nostalgia (well, even haven't unlocked that ending until recently), if you played the game towards its release date.
point was to leave off with a ending where they could make a 2nd movie, weather they got around to it or abondend it is another story.
as for them being in alternate realities, when she passed over with her step daughter and let the darkness into that church, she had become 1 of the damned, b/c of siding with the darkness. next movie (if there is 1) should be about them trying to get back to the good reality or the husband going to SH looking for them
You know, people bitch about how the lead in this movie isn't a male, and I get that. Yeah it would have made more sense. But here is my counter to that. In the Resident Evil movies, they made Alice, an UNRELATED civilian, someone who is NOT in any of the games, and they make her the lead character throughout the whole movie series. So yeah, people can bitch about how the lead in SH is a female, but let's look at the RE movies first, then bitch. That's all I have to say on that.
i dont know if that has much to do with replacing harry. if they made a silent hill 3 movie, after all, it wouldnt make much sense.
this alternate film is lacking, the order was alive, not ghosts - alessa never got revenge on them, she released the incubus and gave heather to harry, cheryl doesnt live, she "combines"
but in the movie, cheryl lives and its all happily ever in the middle of nowhere. but how could that be?
Honestly I never got this reply in my email, but it's like this. Alessa did get her revenge at the end of the movie. Remember all the tentacle rape she endure on the people who burned her? Not only that the order was dead, they were in a purgatory limbo, as was explained. Yeah the movie left out some stuff, but what movie doesn't do that?
And for the ending, well, I honestly wouldn't call living in limbo "happily ever after". Besides, it was probably the setup for the next movie.
The fact that they didn't have Harry mason as the protagonist ruined a possible set of amazing movies they could have put out following the games but they didn't they built it from the ground up and we all know how well that fairs when the movie your making already has a good storyline in place I mean what the fuck were they thinking
best live action movie based on a video game ever. The director really got the sense of what the games were about- the atmosphere, music, visuals...it did help that he was a big fan of the games himself of course.
Silent Hill is one of the few films, based on video games, which turned out to be pretty good! It inspired me to get Silent Hill 2 (Pc)... and I found that game extremely good!
first of all, they should have just strait up adopted the first game's story WITH HARRY! Second, i really don't like your not there, they should have used your rain from SH4. Third, they shouldn't of killed cibil.

For what it's worth, the movie did justice to the game. I still think it's the best videogame/movie adaptation so far. As a stand alone movie, it's ok... doesn't really have any replay value. It honored part one(which is still the best), and did it's own thing. I couldn't ask for anything more.
I love this movie, one of the best game to film adaptations out there and it's fricken scary, one of the best horror movies out there, hope they make a second one.
I think the film was alright, but the story was a bit crap. I mean, the story wasn't great yeah and they missed out some important characters e.g. Lisa, Kaufmann, etc...
Lisa did make a cameo but it was very brief, which I didn't like.
I didn't really mind not having harry but having Harry would have been better. oh well, good movie, great music, great games :) Movie was not as good as games ofc.

The movie was ok. not the best video game movie but it was ok if that makes any sense. But thank goodness that they added this song to the ending credits. ^^

When Sharon looked into Dark Alessa's eyes and Alessa was reborn into Sharon's body, she extended her powers to cover an alternate dimension like the world Rose come from. No. Sharon is an astrial projection of the remaining goodness within Alessa's soul. For Sharon to be Alessa's biological daughter, you would have to stretch your imagination quite far, because it is physically impossible for a nine year old girl to get pregnant, retain the child over third-degree burns, stay pregnant for 21 years and, when the time came to it, birth a child that was exactly like her, down to the last hair and freckle.
I'm guessing Dark Alessa's line, "She's not your child.
I did not reffer to the rape, i know physically thats impossible. SO... Sharon is the good side of Alessa which comes out like a baby, which is taken away from Silent Hill in the orphanage where Rose adopts her. And the demon Alessa calls her home, so she can enter good Sharon as a part of the deal with the demon. So that she and Rose can start over everything as mother and daughter in Alessa's "realm", a normal childhood that she didnt have.

look, i understand you, but this movie has his own story and this is the only adaptation that dont fuck up the whole story look at doom, alone in the dark,street fighter, avp, resident evil,tomb raider(maybe),hitman...maybe MK1 was good
@SciontheDark I don't mind that they replaced Harry so much. It was only because as they wrote the script, they thought that some of the lines were sort of feminine. It's not like they were trying to piss people off. Rose is an ok character.
@SciontheDark After I learned that, I understand where you're coming from. But I, having not played the game, did like the movie. But if I was a fan of the game, I'd be pissed too.
The reason they used Rose as opposed to Harry is, they wanted to emphasize the connection between parent and child; how the protagonist would go to any lengths for their daughter. None better illustrates this than the connection between mother and child.
Cristoph Gans himself explained this; that while regrettable in lore terms, choosing a female protagonist over a male simply made more sense for the subject.
Besides, the movie can't be exactly like the game, or it'd suck. :P

The fact that they didn't have Harry mason as the protagonist ruined a possible set of amazing movies they could have put out following the games but they didn't they built it from the ground up and we all know how well that fairs when the movie your making already has a good storyline in place I mean what the fuck were they thinking

best live action movie based on a video game ever. The director really got the sense of what the games were about- the atmosphere, music, visuals...it did help that he was a big fan of the games himself of course.

Silent Hill is one of the few films, based on video games, which turned out to be pretty good! It inspired me to get Silent Hill 2 (Pc)... and I found that game extremely good!

I had mixed feelings towards this movie
The acting was ok the monsters were awesome (though there should have been more of them) and the plot was simple enough
But why did they have to change so many characters?
And where was all the symbolism from the games?
Still...Pyramid Head was brilliant...flesh throw anyone?

For what it's worth, the movie did justice to the game. I still think it's the best videogame/movie adaptation so far. As a stand alone movie, it's ok... doesn't really have any replay value. It honored part one(which is still the best), and did it's own thing. I couldn't ask for anything more.

I think the film was alright, but the story was a bit crap. I mean, the story wasn't great yeah and they missed out some important characters e.g. Lisa, Kaufmann, etc...
Lisa did make a cameo but it was very brief, which I didn't like.
I didn't really mind not having harry but having Harry would have been better. oh well, good movie, great music, great games :) Movie was not as good as games ofc.

When Sharon looked into Dark Alessa's eyes and Alessa was reborn into Sharon's body, she extended her powers to cover an alternate dimension like the world Rose come from. No. Sharon is an astrial projection of the remaining goodness within Alessa's soul. For Sharon to be Alessa's biological daughter, you would have to stretch your imagination quite far, because it is physically impossible for a nine year old girl to get pregnant, retain the child over third-degree burns, stay pregnant for 21 years and, when the time came to it, birth a child that was exactly like her, down to the last hair and freckle.
I'm guessing Dark Alessa's line, "She's not your child.

I did not reffer to the rape, i know physically thats impossible. SO... Sharon is the good side of Alessa which comes out like a baby, which is taken away from Silent Hill in the orphanage where Rose adopts her. And the demon Alessa calls her home, so she can enter good Sharon as a part of the deal with the demon. So that she and Rose can start over everything as mother and daughter in Alessa's "realm", a normal childhood that she didnt have.

The reason they used Rose as opposed to Harry is, they wanted to emphasize the connection between parent and child; how the protagonist would go to any lengths for their daughter. None better illustrates this than the connection between mother and child.
Cristoph Gans himself explained this; that while regrettable in lore terms, choosing a female protagonist over a male simply made more sense for the subject.
Besides, the movie can't be exactly like the game, or it'd suck. :P
