This is something I'm interested in. What kind of schooling do I need? Is it best to start as a regular welder then work your way up to become an underwater welder or is this something they have schools specific to underwater welding with no welding experiance? Any tips for me?
If your thinking about attending this school think again..... The Ocean Corporation is a dump In the ghetto of Houston, TX.... Don't wast your money an time just go to the Commercial Diving Academy In Jacksonville, FL!!!!!
@wzucha The Ocean Corporation Is not a good school at all this place is a shit hole.. As you can see In the video students are not required to where wetsuits or proper gear at all.. This place is located in the ghetto of Houston, TX. For 20,000 there are way better schools in the U.S you can look at Starting at the one in florida (Commercial Diving Academy) This job is extremely dangerous an getting a good education is very important spend the time to go visit the schools an do your homework....
Whoa thats crazy, I want to do that as soon as i get out of high school. Could you please tell me the steps of becoming a certified underwater welder please!!! (from michael)
Im not certified, but Im an "amateur" welder. My only experience is some light steel, and aluminum. It really interests me to want to persue a career in doing that, and under water welding sounds even more challenging. Id love to know HOW to be certified in it
What I'm wondering is how come some of these weldors are seen not wearing a wet suit in conjunction with the helmet. I saw another video on this subject and it was made clear that they had to wear wet suits due to the electrical current induced in the water. I know if water is pure it will not conduct electricity, but wouldn't the act of welding place impuritites in the water and hence make it conductive?
@1977kb0wqh1996 Most of them have neoprene on underneath their coveralls; Diver only needs to stay out of the path between ground and stinger to avoid a jolt. Getting a shock underwater beats slag burns whilst topside though.
@Sky7956 It's more than an ego thing, it's gender identification. You're competing in a man's world and that's why they don't like it, I'm sure you are a good welder, you're just gonna always be treated differently when trying to do a traditional man's job. In the back of most men's minds they will always think it's wierd that a woman is doing their job and maybe she's even better at it than them, so it's the ego thing too. Bringing down a man's ego won't help you in the workplace.
@coolbmxr26 it's easy for you to say, your probably a man. I've been welding for over 10 yrs and can't get no-where with it, guys think i'm a distraction and can't weld as good as them, i'm better than them, they just won't give me a chance
@coolbmxr26 yo how did u get started...i plan on learning welding as a trade and possibly going the step further and do it underwater...what steps did u take to get thur?
thats so friggin cool im currently training in licholn technical school for welding and was thinking about doing underwater welding i just wasnt sure about the risks of doing it underwater a few of my instructors have told me its pretty dangerous at times but it makes amazing money
well, i may have never dived before, but i can weld underwater, in a 50ltr bucket, it is harder than it looks, i just normaly SMAW weld (same rods) but in a bucket, sweet
@jimmybodidily One uses DC direct current. And if you get to close to the work you might feel a mild shock. Unlike AC alternating current it changes direction. Can use AC in a emergency but if you get in between the work/ground and the electrode =Zapp
@jjgfx I know what you mean every time I finish I weld (especially with fluxcore) and I take off my helmet to clean it up I always seem to manage to breathe in some sort of fume and the only thing I can think to my self is..........cancer!
It decomposes the water, that is breaks the hydrogen and oxygen apart and reacts with the oxygen. Yes it burns underwater. Definition of burning is a redox reaction, which that is.
lol. yeah it can. just takes enough electricity and a way to shield / sustain the arc. The water is flash boiled at the moment the arc is struck, and the coated flux protected by a sort of wax.
Looks like a cool place to be. I've been welding for 10 years and haven't tried it in the water. i always heard the money was good. But I like the structual buildings.
no time for temp work part time. its better because it doesnt have nearly as much dedication than when your on a full time staff trying to complete a building. id learn to do it just for the fun of it.
well said coolbmxr26, good luck to all.. i`m 32 and just starting to learn smaw (as they say it`s better late than never) guys just give coolbmxr26`s advice a tought.. great vid and thanx for posting ;)
I would like to go but i don't have that much money for course. Is there any oteh solution? THIS IS MY DREAM SINCE I WAS A KID! I'm only have one star in open water divnig, but I wan't it more. Thank's in advance for reply! GREETING'S FROM CROATIA!
ocean corp. came to my school last year and did a little presentation. it was pretty cool. they let us do a little, just in a rubbermade tub. so cool! just dont put the ground behind you....
Well this is what i want my carrier in welding to be. Im taking a welding class and my teacher says that all that protects you from underwater welding is your gloves. Is that true? Also is there anything different that you have to underwater weld? (besides waring the scuba gear). How much do underwater welders make anyway?
im a certified welder and im interested in underwater welding. i can make good money what im doing now, just depends on where your working. how much your willing to work. you can make a killing with overtime. i just wish i could find better info on job availabily on the net. cant find hardly anything out there
They're really more like regular rods with a thin coating on them to protect the flux. There's nothing magic about dealing with the electricity down there. You don't grab the electrode with it turned on, just ask to turn it off when you're not welding for a period of time or when you need to change electrodes. (per 0:50) It stays hot most of the time though, just keep your head about you. The first strike you have to hit hard though to knock the wax or coated tip off.
Very intresting looking video,i would love to try that out someday, shame we dont particularly have need for underwater welding at the shipyard i work at..heh
There isn't one good example of diving safety or wet welding technique in this whole video
