His past was tough, and it lead him to take it out on a lot of people, but in the end, he showed that he truly loved her because he made the very difficult choice to let her go since he felt like she would be happier. But it is how TV works, they usually have actors in their 20's portraying teenagers and such. They just happen to have an actress who is actually the age of her character in this film, but that's not the case for Raoul.

While I have a few problems with this version, there's no denying Gerard's acting talent here. He first terrifies you with his vow to ruin Christine's happiness if she denies him his own, then brings you to tears as Christine's kindness brings him to his knees. He's nowhere near as good as Lon Chaney or Robert Englund, but his performance was pretty good nonetheless. :)
when he says "its over now the music of the night" it just the best bit in the whole film. Butler plays such an emotional role in this. It's just so good!
the movie is amazing but if you watch the theatre performance (old school or modern with awesome performers) its 10000000000000000x better its so much more real...

I had to come back and watch this scene because I read somewhere that Christine mouths "I love you" to Raoul before making her decision. It's true! She does, very subtly and sadly, at the very beginning of this clip. Then she gives a brave little smile. Poor Christine. Imagine being handed a choice like this at such a young age.

Just ditch Raoul and be like "I don't love you, I'm in love with the guy that tried to kill you!" after he risked his life to save her? @m8566 She did love him. But it ended up as more pity for the life he had obviously been forced into by his face. And honestly that would have always been there no matter what and their life together would have been difficult with just that. His soul was too blackened by his past.

OMG She totally wanted the Phantom! How did I never realize that? I always thought she meant to trick him into letting her go by kissing him. Obviously I should have known she's not that smart. She put on the wedding ring! I didn't see that before! And then kissed him twice, and there was love in her eyes when she looked at him. Then when she was singing with Raoul at the end she was looking at the Phantom.
@krazyknoxy It's a nice thought. I think Christine's intentions, however, were to demonstrate compassion: "Lord give me courage to show you you are not alone". I think she recognised that his anger and hate could only be driven away by an act of selfless love. It all worked out rather well because by giving herself up to him for one moment she exercised humanity's good etc and he was ashamed of what he'd done, realising that he couldn't hold her when she didn't wish to stay.
And then when he tells Christine he loves her, and she approaches him, and his face lights up in hope for one moment, and then she just breaks his heart by giving him back the ring.

@UnidentifiedSpoon so if she looks at Raol and mouths "I love you" does that mean she then goes and kisses Phantom and means to stay with him, just to save Raol? Then Phantom - after all his plotting and lusting and wanting - lets her GO after the greatest kiss of his life when he has his dream woman, but he finally realises she'd have no sort of life with him.....like he'd not thought about that beforehand? Oh dear....Phantom Fail! Still LOVE this scene and movie though!

I want to believe that he knew she wasn't coming back, but honestly, who wouldn't think that? I would go with the Phantom!! Yeah Roal is handsome, but i am just in love with the phantom!!! Gerard Butler was perfect for this role! I wanted to cry at the end of the movie, he was in love with her, and he loves him bak but cant marry him! I WOULD MARRY HIM!! anyone else agree?

OMG She totally wanted the Phantom! How did I never realize that? I always thought she meant to trick him into letting her go by kissing him. Obviously I should have known she's not that smart. She put on the wedding ring! I didn't see that before! And then kissed him twice, and there was love in her eyes when she looked at him. Then when she was singing with Raoul at the end she was looking at the Phantom.

@krazyknoxy It's a nice thought. I think Christine's intentions, however, were to demonstrate compassion: "Lord give me courage to show you you are not alone". I think she recognised that his anger and hate could only be driven away by an act of selfless love. It all worked out rather well because by giving herself up to him for one moment she exercised humanity's good etc and he was ashamed of what he'd done, realising that he couldn't hold her when she didn't wish to stay.
