@ULibby More athletes compete in the preliminaries than team/event/AA final. Shawn would have to have competed because she wanted a spot in the all-around competition, where you must compete every apparatus. Nastia competed because she wanted to go in the all-around and the bars final. Chellsie competed because she probably wanted a spot in the event finals. Bridget sloan would have competed because they needed a 4th girl to compete. So no Alicia didn't have to, and Sam Peszek wouldn't have to.
@ULibby In prelims 5 people (normally) compete for each team and the top 4 scores count!! The top 8 teams advance to the team final!!
If a gymnast wants to try qualify for the All Around Final they have to compete all 4 events in prelims!! The top 24 gymnasts qualify for the AA Final (with a 2 per country rule)!!
If like Alicia you don't want to do the AA then you can just compete on the events you want!! The top 8 gymnasts on each event qualify for the event finals (2 per country rule again)
@ULibby Alicia i think doesnt compete bars, but she competes everything else. She was the only one who qualified for the vault finals because she was the only one who trained two vaults.
@mlukens16 yea I know what u mean like when she transitions to the low bar her legs go a little forward almost as if she was going to fall forward but she managed to straighten out before that happened. This was a good day for her tho she looked very good on this event that day!
@randomfan247 Because he was the head coach of the Olympic team, if you look at her other Olympic bar routines he's there instead of Chow too, even in podium training
@sam333gymnast there is no such thing as a perfect ten anymore and the chinese girls were wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better on bars thats what got them those two golds she did not even score higher than nastia and nastia fell
@bookiewormie1 nastia fell once. for EF she nailed it. and nastia should have taken gold. pure coincidence that theres a tie and the home team , china, takes home goldd. butim sure its just a coincidence riiiighhhttt!
@bookiewormie1 im nawt saying shawn has the best bars in the world. ik she doesnt, cuz nastia duz... or did... but iwas just saying she executed her routine beautifullyyy!
@FlicTuckFull and "dear" im not saying the chinese have bad bars. he kexin...beautiful routine. but thats one person. she doesnt make up the whole team dear.
Are you on something? China destroyed USA on bars, and it wasn't just He Kexin. Yang Yilin also has a 7.7. Most of the Chinese had huge SV, where as the US had to count Shawn Johnson's bars.
@FlicTuckFull Shawn has amazing bars. maybe not the highest start value in the world, but beautifully executed. and okhay yhu got me. my bad yang yilin a he kexin both had a 7.7 start value my badd. the US i will admit made some rookie errors. but if the US hit every event like every one knew they were capable of, no doubt we would have won. ... and lastly... why do yhu hate americans and the US olympic team? what yhu got nothing better to do than criticize them. gimme a break
@FlicTuckFull I'm using start values here, but china would've owned us on Bars, we probably would've beaten them on vault considering we has a double, an amanar, and a chusovitina, I believe they had an amanar and two doubles. So, by start value, US would have them there, then beam, I would say would be a tie, they're great on beam when they hit, and so are we. Then floor, Fei is good, the others have good routines but not the most difficult, while USA has two good routines. So USA barely wins
Except it ISN'T just about SV ... and IIRC China was ahead of us in SV so, I don't get your point.
China beat USA by over 2.0 Take away 1.6 for Alicia's 2 falls - 0.4. Add 0.8 for Cheng Fei's fall - 1.2. They still win by over 1.2 . (1.575 to be exact.) Now, that's not to say USA couldn't beat that, in theory, seeing as there were areas that could be cleaned up. But, if you clean up USA and also clean up China for their areas then they for sure win. (CONT)
@FlicTuckFull Sorry, I didn't see this comment. I know it's not about start value, but US had a higher start value on two events. Chinese on bars obviously. But beam would've been equal I think. But yeah, I see your point now. Neither of the teams were on that day, but China was definitely more on than America, so China wins fair and square, because it's a matter of how you perform, and China out-performed america.
(CONT) People were just hoping China would pull a China and be super inconsistent, but they weren't, they finally hit. That was why people were expecting USA to have a chance, they thought China would continue their past trends and pull some crazy random falls.
@FlicTuckFull I've always admired the Chinese going for broke and doing difficult skills even though they fall on them in competition. I do agree that a lot of people thought China was going to be inconsistent, but they were pretty consistent. Didn't they only have a fall on beam? If that were the case, and we didn't have a fall on floor and have people step out, we could've pulled it off. I will admit that the Chinese were especially strong these past few years.
@FlicTuckFull I know, I meant like even with our fall on beam and theirs, it would've been like there was no fall since they equal each other out, then really it would've been who performed best on floor. If they both did perfectly, it would be hard to say who would've won. It would've been very close.
I love how bars is Shawns weakest event**
