I don't like the track hes playing to, its a shitty death metal version of deathcore (constant breakdowns but with some death metal riffage at the same time) really bad track, but derek is still an amazing drummer

Well if you watch the "The Spirit Carries On" mini series you will see that John Petrucci comments on how amazing Derek's blast beats are after his auditions. So eat that shit.
What gives the illusion that Joey is "better" is because usually when the drum goes at the speed Joey does, the guitar doubles or equals it but in Slipknot the drum sounds more dominant because the guitar riffs are simple.
Toddy is, without a doubt, among the best. He just seems to get involved w linear death metal bands... like this n Hate Eternal. Hes got so much talent he should be playin w more tech n progressive DM acts.
@nsshero He's not only about blast beats... he's much more versatile than that I think. Granted, he's concentrated a lot on making a better name for extreme metal musicians, and made this DVD and all, but looking at his modern drummer performance he's got a lot more to him than just metal!
As far as I know, he does a lot of Jazz, too and that quite successfully. People dismissing him as a one trick blast pony should definitely check his resumee.

How can you even compare Mike and Derek? yes they both play metal, but with their own style. I´d like derek roddy better in "the old days", it seems he struggle a lot more getting the blast´s down, trying to hit harder, he even tends to make a few small mistakes here and there, back in time he was a machine, a romain goulon with a bit more dynamic and feel.. he´s still awsome, but not in the same way as he ones was in my opinion
I saw Roddy play a spot at a drum clinic. About 8mins long- he gave us all his blast beat variations, which were awesome... and then dropped into some bebop Elvin Jones style drumming; because he can. Stunning drummer!

See death metal uses a thing called the blast beat. its takes a long time to build speed in it, but once you get it up, its not difficult to play. This man is a really good drummer though. Check out his videos, he plays some jazz, fusion, and of course death metal, i would say look at "Derek Roddy: live at Modern Drummer 2008" watch all of it!. Plus dave lombardo is my favorite drummer!!
@Parano666D You like Death? Thats a great start to death metal! Check out the big three of death metal! Morbid Angel, Obituary, and Death. All of them made death metal what it is. Also, death metal is more than blast beats, check out Atheist, and Demilich both of them rarely use blast beats, and have some creative fucking riffs.
@Parano666D It took me time to get used to it, but i absolutely loved the riffs back in the day, they are extremely creative. Just listen to Erecshyrinol, its an anagram for no lyrics here. You may like it.
Derek is solid, not one misplaced note! not too familiar with the blast beats but im trying to learn some more styles. Is it just singles between the snare/kick or do you play them at the same time???
@TheWardrumma Blast beats are as simple as they come. 2 cookie cutter examples are kick-snare-kick-snare, over and over about a million times a second. Or you can take it a step up and on kick hit RLRLRLRL and for every "L" hit the snare also.

I´d like derek roddy better in "the old days", it seems he struggle a lot more getting the blast´s down, trying to hit harder, he even tends to make a few small mistakes here and there, back in time he was a machine, a romain goulon with a bit more dynamic and feel.. he´s still awsome, but not in the same way as he ones was in my opinion

I saw Roddy play a spot at a drum clinic. About 8mins long- he gave us all his blast beat variations, which were awesome... and then dropped into some bebop Elvin Jones style drumming; because he can. Stunning drummer!

@Parano666D half of the drummers started out as jazz drummers and porgressed into metal drummers...and hard rock and heavy metal are two of the easiest genres of music to play...and who gives a fucking if they can't be all poppy and make it big on the charts next to justin bieber and lady gaga...i'd much rather be praised by my more than loyal fans and play local $10 shows for the rest of my life than be at the top of the charts and play sold out arenas to thousands of fags any day

@Parano666D See the problem is that i am not stuck with death metal as you call it, its not even my favorite genre, thrash takes the cake there. I love death metal, for its variety, which there is much, thats why there are so many subgenres. No other genre of music can offer something like the crushing riffs of bands like Devourment, to the solo soothing melodies of Opeth, as it ranges in music it also does in emotion. That is variety, plus like i said before, i also listen to other stuff.

@Parano666D It was not difficult to drum, but its not a song you can just pick up and play. See death metal uses a thing called the blast beat. its takes a long time to build speed in it, but once you get it up, its not difficult to play. This man is a really good drummer though. Check out his videos, he plays some jazz, fusion, and of course death metal, i would say look at "Derek Roddy: live at Modern Drummer 2008" watch all of it!. Plus dave lombardo is my favorite drummer!!

@Parano666D You like Death? Thats a great start to death metal! Check out the big three of death metal! Morbid Angel, Obituary, and Death. All of them made death metal what it is. Also, death metal is more than blast beats, check out Atheist, and Demilich both of them rarely use blast beats, and have some creative fucking riffs.

@TheWardrumma Blast beats are as simple as they come. 2 cookie cutter examples are kick-snare-kick-snare, over and over about a million times a second. Or you can take it a step up and on kick hit RLRLRLRL and for every "L" hit the snare also.
